Shooting, 'cane take toll

The shooting of Suge Knight at the swank Sky Bar at the Shore Club hotel early yesterday morning added another sour note to a VMA weekend already ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. The highest-profile absentee from the pre-show party scene was Lindsay Lohan, whose mom, Dina, clipped her daughter's wings, refusing to let her fly down until the ferocious storm had passed, according to local gossip. "For every one celebrity who cancels there are 750 less tourists," calculated Ocean Drive fashion editor Alexis Zipp. Miamians grumbled that the hurricane and Knight shooting might cause MTV to relocate the event next year.

Some were also taking Mariah Carey's name in vain, as the diva ordered the storm-tossed grounds of the National Hotel turned into a stage for her VMA performance. Yes, the American Airlines Arena was apparently sufficient for all the other artists. "She insisted upon a full-dress rehearsal, without her, on Saturday night," grumbled one guest who had his nap schedule interrupted by the sound check. "And she may be on vocal rest, but that didn't stop her drinking and partying until 3 a.m. on Friday night."
