Mariah Carey "too fat to walk" claim is fake news

Mariah Carey is not too fat to walk. This mean-spirited claim, in addition to being provably untrue, is a gross example of fake news. Gossip Cop can expose this shameful falsehood.

It comes from the National Enquirer, which blares in a headline in its new issue, "Mariah too fat to walk!" The accompanying article begins by saying Carey is "now so fat her handlers have to wheel her on to the stage on a bed or Jet Ski. That is the spectacle witnessed by the bamboozled audiences who paid to watch the 5-foot-8 songbird waddle around a Las Vegas stage." A so-called "insider" is quoted as saying, "Mariah's clearly miserable."

"She wore five-inch heels during the show, but she couldn't walk more than a few inches at a time, and her knees seemed to buckle under her weight. Whenever she stood up or moved, everyone held her breath for fear she'd fall," this supposed source dramatically claims to the supermarket tabloid. The gossip magazine asserts Carey's alleged weight gain is because she "has no man", even though in actuality the singer has resumed her romance with Bryan Tanaka. And this is the same tabloid that just last month claimed Carey was dating Tanaka and Nick Cannon at the same time.

But now she's single? Clearly clueless, the outlet's alleged tipster contends, "Mariah's been comforting herself with food." And to further demean the songstress and her size, the tabloid's purported snitch further claims, "She's so fat that all her costumes keep having to be let out. She's bloated and uncomfortable, and doesn't have the stamina to perform anymore. Mariah needs to take stock of her life and sort it out in a hurry."

That's weird. That's what Gossip Cop often thinks about the National Enquirer writers, as we can't imagine who in good conscience penned this cruel and inaccurate story, which unsurprisingly quotes a doctor who has never met Carey. And to further body-shame the performer, the tabloid features a picture of Carey from the 1990s to emphasize that she's gained weight. It is, of course, extremely common for adults to weigh more in their 40s than they did in their 20s.

Additionally, nowhere in this story does the magazine admit Carey has been carried onto the stage for years. This isn't a new, recent development because she can't walk. She has always loved dramatic entrances and has, in fact, become known for them. Whether it's on a chaise lounge, a chariot, a bed, a jet ski or even the arms of her backup dancers, Carey likes to make a spectacle every time she comes on stage. It has nothing to do with her size.

Not to mention, the "too fat to walk" claim is demonstrably false regardless of Carey's behavior in concerts. The superstar has been seen out and about on many occasions in recent months, with the paparazzi capturing her walking here and there. It seems quite apparent that the outlet just wanted to be sensational, so it twisted Carey's recent on-stage entrances into fake news about being "too fat to walk", even though there's also ample evidence that she does indeed walk around during her concerts. Gossip Cop hears those close to Carey are disgusted by this untrue and rude story, and we can't say we blame them.
