Piers Morgan has hit back at Good Morning Britain viewers who criticised the ITV show for an interview with Mariah Carey about the mass shooting in Las Vegas that was branded "distasteful" and "inappropriate" by some watching.
During Monday's show, Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid spoke to the singer live via video link, asking her about the tragic incident in Las Vegas, where a mass shooting killed more than 50 people and left more than 400 injured - which she didn't appear to be fully aware of. Mariah, who could be seen reclining on a sofa in front of a Christmas tree to promote her upcoming UK Christmas shows, was shown live scenes unfolding from the Las Vegas strip as ITV viewers took to Twitter to brand GMB producers "tasteless".
One person wrote: "We now go to Mariah Carey for some unknown reason for the latest updates," while someone else said: "Mixing a pre-arranged interview with Mariah Carey (and Christmas tree?) with awful news from Las Vegas. Surreal, unfair to her, poor journalism." Another added: "Finding GMB in bad taste this morning, breaking Vegas news to Mariah Carey looking for some sort of scoop or reaction."
After "Mariah Carey" started trending, Piers responded by defending the programme's decision to ask her about the Las Vegas shooting, arguing that the breaking news took precedence. "Mariah was booked to do an interview about her UK Christmas tour," Piers tweeted. "Obviously news events in Vegas have now taken precedence." He added: "We told Mariah's people before the interview. Her reaction seemed very relevant given she's a performer who often has residence in Vegas."
After her interview with GMB, Mariah Carey tweeted: "Horrified to hear about the shooting in Las Vegas. My thoughts are with the victims and their families. Praying for everyone's safety." The atrocity at the country music festival in Las Vegas is now the deadliest mass shooting in US history. The shooting took place near the Mandalay Bay Hotel at around 22:30pm local time (05:30am GMT) when a gunman is reported to have opened fire at the Route 91 event being held on the Las Vegas strip.
