Mariah to get the key to the city of Tampa
At Mariah Carey's show tonight in Tampa, Pam Iorio gets to be a cool mom, as well as a mayor. Among Carey's millions of fans is Iorio's teen daughter, Caitlin - who will be there as her mother gives the pop star the key to the city. Iorio plans to deliver the key between Carey's second and third songs at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. It will be the first such presentation for the venue, center spokeswoman Christina Infinger said.
"Yes, I'll be there. It is exciting," said Infinger, who's in her 20s and grew up on Carey's 1990s music. Iorio's spokeswoman, Susanna Martinez, said the 44-year-old mayor's musical taste runs more to Motown and that she came to appreciate Carey through Caitlin. But Martinez said the diva is plenty deserving.
"It's fairly routine to give keys to visiting dignitaries," Martinez said. "She's on a world tour, and the mayor obviously wants her event here to be memorable." Martinez did not have a list of past key recipients, but she did cite precedent from Iorio's predecessor, Dick Greco, who gave one to Cher. (T.T.) Many thanks to Mariah-Carey.org.
