LOVERBOY

"Loverboy" was the first single taken from the soundtrack of "Glitter". Because radio stations were so eager to play the song, it was released for radio stations a week before scheduled, on July 17, 2001.

"Loverboy" alternates a bouncing funky bass with rock guitars, features cameos from rappers Da Brat, Ludacris, 22 and Shawna. Funk legends Cameo, who also appear on the track, went into the studio to re-sing the chorus of their 1986 hit "Candy", a song Mariah said has always been one of her favorites.

"I felt like a little kid again, like, 'Please just sing this how you did it on the remix'," Mariah said she told them. "And then I felt bad because I didn't want to be overstepping my boundaries. It's like reliving a childhood moment."

"Loverboy" jumped from Number 60 to Number 2 at the Billboard Hot 100 after its commercial release and went on to sell 500,000 copies in the USA alone. Therefor it received a gold certification and became the best selling single of 2001.

When "Loverboy" was recorded but not yet released, Mariah found out that Jennifer Lopez used the same beat for her song "I'm real". A devastated Mariah had to scrap all the work she'd done and go home and re-record it. But the question is, was the fact that J.Lo used the same sample from "Firecracker", an old song by the Japanese band Yellow Magic Orchestra, a coincidence or conspiracy? In any case, Mariah replaced the "Firecracker" sample with the "Candy" sample, and the fans will probably never know how the original song sounded like.
