"Never too far / Hero medley" was released on December 11, 2001 in the USA only. The proceeds of this single were donated to the New York City Police Heroes Fund, which was set up to aid the families of police officers killed during the September 11 terror attacks. The single features a medley of "Never too far" and "Hero", and the B-side is an unreleased ballad, "There for me", which was produced by David Foster and written by Diane Warren.

Mariah told the New York Post how she came up with the idea for the single. "So many people were asking me to sing 'Never too far' and 'Hero' at fundraisers that I decided to make a medley of the two. This all happened by accident, but I really feel they work together. Even though it's only a single, I wanted the proceeds to benefit the N.Y.C. Police Heroes Fund."

Unfortunately, this single was a big flop. It only reached number 81 on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles chart and number 3 on the Billboard's Hot 100 Singles Sales chart, with a total sales of 80,000 copies.
