Gossip

Hurricane Katrina bypassed Miami, and MTV's Video Music Awards carried on. What a blow to the cultural environment if it hadn't. The show was a thrill ride for MTV's audience, I'm sure. So why critique something that for the most part I don't appreciate? The gangsta rap/hip-hop boat has sailed without me. Oh, now I'm losing all my street cred.

Of the various off-stage sightings, Paris Hilton requiring six minions to align a zipper on her gown was amusing. (What were the requirements to unzip her?) And at Friday's In Touch party for Mariah at the Raleigh Hotel, the big scene was Miss Carey and Jessica Simpson hugging, chatting and generally becoming the focus of every eye and ear. Producer Jermaine Dupri - he created Carey's Sunday night National Hotel rooftop musical number - was so caught up in the Carey-Simpson gabfest he pulled out his BlackBerry to voice message himself about arranging a possible duet between the two singers, whose clothing-optional fashion sense is as impressive as their octaves. (Dupri also produced Carey's comeback CD.)

The low-key woman of awards night? Double-winner Alicia Keys. "I'm relaxed," she said in a genuinely relaxed manner. "Basically, I'm dying to hear Coldplay!"
