Re: Celine Dion vs Mariah Carey (73,685) (73,687)

Mariah's got the waaaay better catalog for sure. The fact that she actually had a hand in the creative process makes it even more special. Celine's best albums (Falling Into You and Let's Talk About Love) don't even hold a candle to any of Mariah's albums before 1999 and TEOM. I'm not being bitter (I own the both of the Celine albums I mentioned above and enjoy most of the songs) but both sets are also the epitome of MOR, which at the time, bode really well for sales. They were very polarizing to critics, and Falling Into You definitely did not deserve to win the Grammy for Album of the Year. In fact, it's in every list of undeserving AOTY winners out there. You can't compare that to Mariah's strong self-titled debut, much less Daydream or Butterfly, which was around the era FIY and LTAL was released.

Mary J. Blige - U + Me (Love Lesson) (73,525)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines

Thick Of It was great, classic Mary. Her follow up, U + Me (Love Lesson) continues that elegant, mature vibe. It's effortless. And the echoed "woah"s she belts out after the chorus can cause goosebumps. Another solid effort. Mariah, this is what growing up sounds like.

Article: Mariah Carey wrecks Dubai bellydancer's show (73,496)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
Two things: 1. It just seems a little hypocritical for the person who allows and probably even encourages Mariah to wear the parade of tacky outfits we have been subjected to over the last two years, not to mention whose daughter most likely had a hand in picking those terrible outfits and posting them for the entire world to see, to be suddenly worried about having kids around to see "things" that the belly dancer might show. The poor dancer's ensemble probably even looked more decent than anything this dumb mother-daughter tandem allowed Mariah to be photographed in. Please, even if the dancer happened to also be a hooker, she'd still have more class in her eyelash than both Stella and Mishka have combined. Besides, knowing what Mariah has been wearing, Roc and Roe have probably already seen everything. When Roc says "boobies and butts", you know they're already up to speed. 2. I have pretty much learned to accept that Mariah has submitted herself completely to Stella's top-notch skills as a manager. So when stories like these come up, I just have to repeat Mariah's own words - it just don't get any better.

This is what I love about this board, because I get to see different opinions about Mariah's music. It's great that you love MOAIA and that you compare it to Butterfly, because I think the exact opposite. It sounds more like Rainbow to me - I remember posting such comparison here years ago - similarities include more obvious filler, interludes... To me what lets it down is the same-y production, which is mostly due to its rushed nature. A little too cohesive for its own good. But it is still home to 3 songs that showcase Mariah's brilliant vivid storytelling (Betcha Gon' Know, Candy Bling, It's A Wrap) 3 songs with unfulfilled hit potential (H.A.T.E.U., Ribbon, Angels Cry) and one interlude that should have been a full song like the Rainbow Interlude was (Languishing).

Mariah should release EPs, not just singles (73,142)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
John Mayer just dropped the second installment of his upcoming album The Search for Everything last Friday. He calls each EP a "wave". Don't know if you're a fan or if you've listened to any but here is Wave One and Wave Two in case you wanna. It's a return to form for him as this is shaping up to be his best and most diverse-sounding set of songs in a long time. Now back to Mariah. If she wants to keep making music without really releasing an album, then maybe she should release songs she has recorded via extended plays rather than just drop singles. A single must be big and successful enough to be able to tide fans over until the next release, and Mariah's recent attempts at that have failed to make any impact, so maybe a collection of songs will do better. It won't guarantee success, but it's a bigger artistic expression than just one song. I'm sure she's recorded enough material since MIAMTEC to fill at least 2 EPs, so why not try to release them.

Re: Grammys comment (72,872) (72,938)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
While it is true that the Grammys were beyond cruel to her in '96 what with all their focusing and zooming in on Mariah's expression after every award she lost, the frustration for this recent comment is mostly stems from the fact that it just makes her come across as some petty, arrogant grown ass woman who still can't get over a 21-year incident when she has accepted three Grammys 11 years ago. It makes her seem like she only accepted those awards because out of courtesy and nothing else. Questions regarding the credibility of the Grammys have existed for ages now. But this issue really isn't about the Grammys. It's about just how poorly Mariah can answer questions when she's not being careful (or what other people might call "being honest"). This behavior can only be justified by people who know what happened in '96, not the general public - an audience that used to love her but now can't even stand her 90% of the time. So it's really not a matter of which institution she suddenly decides to criticize, or whether or not her opinion has any validity to it. Like someone else has said here, she can't afford to just burn bridges on a whim or outburst.

Mariah the unlikeable hypocrite (72,838)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
Okay I know I recently referenced Mariah's 1996 Grammys snub in one of my posts but this is just unacceptable. Being unapologetically honest and being a bitter sore loser are two very different things. And the fact that she just thought it would be cool to suddenly bring up a 21-year old disappointment remotely related to the proper answer of a harmless question is just childish. This is coming from the same woman who submitted TEOM for consideration in the 2006 Grammys, where she won 3 out of 8 nominations. The nerve. How ungrateful can one get? What a hypocrite. Sure, the Grammys are notorious for choosing the wrong winners half the time, and being predictable and boring, but these are thoughts she should keep to herself because news flash - she can't afford to piss off even more people than she already did in the last 2 years alone. She's not as big as she was anymore, and I'm pretty sure she's a persona non grata to a lot of events and shows right now, and she is yet to deliver a much publicized stunning live performance post-2010. It turns out the woman who harbors adolescent fears is even better at holding grudges. Wake up, Mariah. Let's be completely honest - you haven't been hot tamale or that chick they like for almost a decade now. There's this thing called "reality". Look it up. People do get older. Birthdays do happen. The mighty do fall. That is, if you can spare some time away from your bubbly, poor wardrobe choices and mostly tasteless, awkward social media posts. It's just sad when the only redeeming factors left for the woman I have considered my superhero for the longest time are her past music and being a good mom.

Article: Mariah's first live performance since disastrous NYE gig (72,778)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
This was good. The NYE debacle side effects were obvious, but she did better than I expected (I find myself saying that a lot as of late). I Don't was 30% lipped while Vision Of Love was live through and through - which makes us wonder: Is VOL the only song she can sing thoroughly live anymore? Sorry to be a downer but it seems like we just keep lowering the bar for her live efforts that performances that we would have considered sub-par or meh in 2000-2010 are the ones we are so thankful to be able to praise these days. It's not about us, but I don't think it's healthy for us fans to always be nervous every time she gets up on stage, crossing every finger and praying that she can get through a performance with minimal issues. Mariah, if you're stuck with Stella, then at least minimize the alcohol and unnecessary late nights. It's bad enough that you're not as confident to use your sensitive instrument anymore, so the least you can do is not to dry out what's left of it. You can do this.

Re: Grammys (72,698) (72,727)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines

As it was already pointed out and as a Google search would say, Jagged Little Pill was the actual biggest album that year. If we were to judge by the performance of its and Daydream's singles, Daydream would have definitely won. But album sales-wise, JLP sold more copies then and still does now. Preference is a subjective thing, but even I, a Mariah fan, would be blind to just ignore the impact of Alanis' album or its merit as an AOTY contender. It was every bit the tour de force Daydream was. It could have gone either way, and unfortunately, it wasn't Mariah's night... at all.

Agreed. Jagged Little Pill was just as big a contender as Daydream was. While Daydream did contain a slew of (mega) hit singles, I can't say it's as relevant as JLP to this day, and by relevant I don't mean influence, but actual popularity. It's still the go-to post-breakup listening therapy for a lot of the younger audiences these days, whereas Daydream isn't even mentioned much, even though its songs do get some airplay. As a Mariah fan, a part of me will still be bitter about Grammys '96, but not because JLP won, but because Mariah didn't get squat. Not. Even. Just. One. Even if JLP was basically a lot of angst mostly expressed through yelping, it still holds up strongly to this day, just like Daydream does. It was the only album out of the nominees that I wouldn't mind Daydream losing to.

Adele's GM tribute song choice - Fastlove (72,645)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
Is anybody else as happy as I am with her song choice? It was genius mostly for 2 reasons: First, though its theme (an ode casual sex) may be deemed inappropriate for a tribute, apparently Adele actually chose this song because it was her first memory of hearing George Michael. She put her own orchestral Bond-soundtrack spin to it, which was nice. You could tell this track meant a lot to her. Second, they avoided the obvious/predictable. They could have easily come up with a medley of his hits where most songs likely would have come from the Faith era, but instead they went for one of George's most criminally underrated tracks, which also happens to be his last charting hit in the US. Here's an article explaining other reasons why it was the perfect choice. Fastlove is one of my most favorite GM songs. The track is what expensive sex sounds like in sonic form, which can be quite ironic for a song about hooking-up. And that video was ahead of its time. Bravo, Adele. Once again, RIP to "The Singing Greek".

Yup, Benny may be all of those, but unfortunately, there's a couple things he can't provide that Stella can in spades: 5. A creepy family with no respect for boundaries whatsoever. 4. A complete disregard for class and proper decorum. 3. Top-notch kiss-ass-ery. 2. Misled attempts at "female-empowerment". 1. Sweet lady kisses at night. (I really wouldn't be surprised if Marella are endgame, even if the relationship is actually one-sided - yeah, Stella, better find another.)

59th Grammys (72,567)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
Adele is such a humble winner. 25 is a great album, but she's right - Lemonade is the real Album of the Year. You know something is wrong when even the winner herself cannot accept her own award. Beyoncé's time will come. Hopefully by then the Academy has finally learned how to choose truly deserving winners. And I'm not just saying this because they robbed Mariah of at least ten Grammys over the entire course of her career.

Wow, this really is where she is now. It really has come to a point where she is being bashed by fans of another artist because Mariah merely being associated with their fave is somehow derogatory to their idol's image. I know they may be "just" fans (like us), but such gesture from them speaks volumes of how Mariah's brand has deteriorated over the past 5 years. Any period pre-Idol, they would have been ecstatic about this collaboration. Congrats Mariah, for being and doing "you". High five to Stella('s face) for being instrumental to this epic downfall.

"Mariah's" World (72,412)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |

|
Enough of this bull****. A docu-series is supposed to be educational, not some clumsily-pieced together clip show of manufactured, cringe-worthy, unconvincing, badly-acted drama interspersed with glamour shots. If that was truly Mariah's world, no one in the right, non-opportunistic mind will ever want to be a part of it - not with that cult of a family following her around so closely they might as well replace her own shadow. Season 2 can go to the trash if it's just gonna be more of the same crap (which is very likely).

I love Corinne Bailey Rae. To me she's the best thing that came out of 2006. Her latest album is great, especially Green Aphrodisiac, Horse Print Dress and Do You Ever Think Of Me? But I really can see Mariah pulling off this sultry track, Closer, from her previous album. That is just elegant, mature sexy.

Maybe we underestimated the power of unnecessary self-caresses, cheap-looking inappropriate outfits and constantly in-your-face overflowing boobage (yes, not cleavage - boobage). The song itself, on the other hand, is likely gonna be forgotten after this week. So maybe Stella and Mariah were right. Maybe this video really is the way to go if we're hoping for the best chance of people remembering this song.

25, 20, 15, heck, maybe even 10 years ago, I would have considered this possible. Now, considering how stoic she prefers to be in during live performances, I don't see it happening. In this highly visual generation, you can't just stand there or run back and forth a little bit and let all the backup dancers do the hard work. You need to be actually part of the spectacle, especially in an event of such magnitude. Sure, Mariah does have huge uptempo hits fit for the occasion (Emotions, Someday, Make It Happen, Fantasy, Honey, Heartbreaker, It's Like That, Shake It Off) and maybe even her softer/slower/mellower ones (Vision Of Love, Hero, One Sweet Day, Always Be My Baby, We Belong Together, #Beautiful), but she's gotta be present and really be down to do whatever.

Thank you. I think the biggest mistake of some people here is that they come to this site expecting this to be some sort of safe space for them. There's nothing wrong with that - but there's nothing realistic about it either. They forget that what makes a fan board interesting is allowing all sorts of fans with their various ways of showing their love for an artist to express themselves. I can't really speak for the webmaster here, but I doubt this board would have lasted as long as it did if only positive messages were actually posted. If you don't like what you read and disagree with it, then that's what scrolling is for. If all the messages happen to be a stream of negativity at a given period, then take a break from the board and check back later. It's all up to you - when everything you read tortures you, remember that no one's holding a gun to your head to keep visiting this site. The pain is therefore self-inflicted.

Bittersweet (72,161)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
First off, I'm actually pleasantly surprised that I Don't has stayed within the US iTunes Top 10 for almost a day now. No shade there but really, her new material usually debuts and gets into the Top 20 with any luck for a few hours and then tumbles down and out of the charts the next day or two. I hope radio picks it up and that it gets a lot of streams on Spotify because we know that's what really matters now and abomination of a video is not gonna do her any favors. I could hardly imagine anyone hitting the repeat button after sitting through that awkward touch-fest that could easily pass for soft porn. Watching it felt like seeing your mom / aunt / sister / cousin (depending on how old you are compared to Mariah's age) doing the same things she did in the video in public. Granted, it's not like she full-on pleasured herself on camera but for a woman who came out with Vision of Love, she sure has come a loooong way. When Madonna was around her age, she was already barely pulling off a hot pink leotard in the Hung Up clip. But that was then. And it's Madonna. She and Mariah are different artists. You know how Mariah glosses over the Glitter era like it never happened? I'mma do the same for this poorly edited cheap compilation of shots of unnecessary body/hair stroking, in/on-the-car- fidgeting and supposedly come-hither looks that fail to seduce but instead ask, "I'm still hot, right? Right? Right???"

Yup. That's another way to make yourself more relatable. I cannot unsee that. What look is it anyway? Sporty tramp? Trashy fitness chick? Drunk aunt lost in the gym? There's just no way that this is gonna get any good press other than the token "I love her confidence" comment. This look is probably gonna be in the new video as well? Article: Mariah Carey previews video for new single I Don't (71,952)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
Okay, so from the preview it seems like another montage of fake-sexy shots possibly devoid of any narrative. I actually like (yes, just like) the song and this video just cheapens it. At least in the video for #Beautiful her outfits came off as flirty. That black PVC outfit screams bondage-gone-wrong. That white lace leotard isn't any much better either. And her "sexy" antics are just so try-hard at this point. The tired lemme show ya some leg, lemme stroke my hair, lemme gyrate slowly tricks seem so sexy 101 and only register as uncomfortable at best. That's not how you tease a video. And if those are the best shots then we are in trouble. Mariah serves awkward once again. The only thing I liked was how they stylized the song title in the end, with the words "I do" differing in color from the letters "n" and "t".
