I have been a fan literally since I was twelve, and things are definitely not ok with MC right now. I adore her, but I am not going to pretend. The lyrics "she smiles through a thousand tears" feel so appropriate because honestly that's what comes through. Someone smiling through it all, but underneath hasn't been ready to truly face some stuff. Haven't we all been there one time or another? I know I have. Right now, I don't care about her hairstyle or her clothes. I don't care about when her next performance is, I don't care about whether she's lipping or when her next album is coming out. I don't care what the press says or how many people are dogging her publicly. All I want is the best for Mariah the person, not the "celebrity". I hope she's able to get some genuine support around her.

I hope Mariah can take some time to re-group. She seems to be throwing herself into work, and honestly it feels like she's masking a lot of stuff right now. I just want the best for her and if that means no performing for a while, so be it.

Dubbing / re-singing (48,955)

This discussion always fascinates me because it has been a part of the music industry for so long. To me, the artist is still doing the work even when there is editing involved. It is still their voice, it's still them doing the vocals. I mean, I get that some editing is smoother than other editing, but generally speaking, dubbing won't ruin a dvd or tv special for me.

Don't quote me on this or anything, but I'm pretty sure Madonna said that in the early 90's. If memory serves I think she mentioned in an interview of some kind that her dad liked Mariah as a singer and she was pretty rebellious with her father lol. A lot of time has passed since then. We all have ego's, Madonna and Mariah are no exception. Mariah can dish out shade when she wants to. I have noticed over the years of evolving, Madonna has mellowed considerably in terms of shading people. I personally just chalked that comment to be ego based.

Thank you for being able to discuss another artist on this board - and do it respectfully. It is very much appreciated. Mariah is my favorite female vocalist, Madonna my favorite entertainer and usually fans of both are completely at odds with each other, which I've always found silly. Mariah and Madonna are not compatible, they don't need to be. It is the music and entertainment business, there should be room for everyone without feeling threatened all the time. I like all kinds of music, rather like flavors of ice cream.

I just love this version so much especially because I really feel we get to see Mariah the human being being silly and having fun, beyond all the other stuff that "celebrity" brings. Say what you will about the Tommy years, but the videos she put out for Merry Christmas are just so timeless.

Merry Christmas, Stacey (48,585)

I love your new icon. I love Mariah's 1994 Christmas photos. I almost picked that one. Lol. Seriously, if we can't peacefully accept one another's viewpoints when we're talking about things, just on the most basic level of human respect, then there is something wrong. I don't think anyone should have to defend their fandom. It isn't a huge deal, and in the end has zero impact on what Mariah does, musically or personally. Lol. I'd venture to guess there have been times (for example) where you possibly haven't agreed with things I have posted on this board, and if so, I don't think having a different view is a personal attack on me as a person. I say what I feel, but I don't expect all people have to see things the same. I've been reading/posting here for years now, and the moment someone mentions another artist (like Celine, Mary, Madonna et al) people get all defensive and it's all about how "Mariah is the Queen". Now, I love Mariah, she is hands down my fave singer/vocalist of all time. Been a fan literally since VOL. I also love Madonna's music I have since I was 6 lol. Are the two comparable? Not in the least. Apples and oranges I don't see what enjoying more than one artist has to do with being a fan either. I love a whole assortment of musicians, but it doesn't make me love Mariah any less. There should be room for everyone. Same goes for a messageboard. Cute story about your daughter.

As I say every year, Christmas isn't Christmas without Mariah's holiday music, and what a treat for those able to attend the Beacon. I have truly enjoyed the clips I have seen. Thanks RJJ12 (and everyone posting them). Man, I would love a DVD of one of these shows. Sounds great. Merry Christmas, all. Does anyone else still love the 1994 photoshoot for Merry Christmas? To this day, I love them. I think MC s radiant.

I just want to say for the record, when I entitled my post "What do people want from Mariah?" I did so not because I was asking the question, but more to emphasize a point. At times I feel the actual music gets lost because of constant back and forth over Mariah's voice, live performances, versus lipped ones, what Mariah should and shouldn't be doing to improve her career/life whatever else. Could Mariah benefit from sitting down with her team, getting a vocal coach, reworking her songs to fit her current situation? Absolutely. I'm not suggesting anyone who has voiced that is "wrong". I'm simply saying, it is easy for people on the outside to look at things and say "I've got the solution. This is what you should do." When in reality none of us are living her experience. Was the tree lighting flawless? No, it wasn't. She clearly struggled. But to read what is out there right now on the internet about MC, and how "bad" things are it's as if people are talking about world hunger or some horrible injustice on the planet. There are upsets when she lips and upsets when she sings live and it doesn't go over as expected. It seems as though anyone who chooses to offer her compassion gets told they are making excuses for her, or not looking at things with an objective eye. I have absolutely no control over what Mariah does in her life she is the only one that does. I honestly can't sit here and say the tree lighting was the worst performance ever, because it wasn't. Yes, Mariah has hit and miss stuff going on with her vocal ability, but getting angry with her, judging her and blaming seems counter productive.

Honestly, what do people want from Mariah? (48,250)
by Deedre aka MiTodoChop @HBF from Canada

If she lip-syncs during a performance, social media goes on a rampage. When she sings live and doesn't sound exactly like 1990-1996 social mediaites are ready to rip her a new one and bring her legacy into question. To me, that steals all the joy out of watching a performance in the first place. Last night was a live performance. I appreciate when live performances "sound" live. Did it sound flawless? No. But, when I watch her sing, I don't do it because I want to point out how bad she sounds. I don't expect her to sound like she did on the 1994 recording. I get that the vocal wasn't perfect, but it certainly wasn't horrendous either.

Which often means fans/posters aren't going to share the same perspective. That's to be expected. If we all shared the exact same thoughts, what would there be to talk about? I mean this in the most sincere, light-hearted, humorous way possible. March will will be my 37th birthday, and in the last few years I've really come to the place of acceptance of what is. For me, I don't come here and post because I want people to agree with me or because I want to convince people of my views on MC and her music. I don't have any control over anything but my own thoughts and responses. We don't have to have the same opinions on Mariah, to be respectful and kind to each other - especially when discussing her. It doesn't have to be so serious. Know what I mean. Vern? Lol.

I loved it and actually hadn't seen it before. I realize that the stuff in China and Japan has not been the best vocal performances of her career, I get that. I'm not making excuses, I just don't think it is as dire as some are perceiving it to be (ie MC should retire ect). I know she's being paid, and I get that some are tired of what they feel are excuses or "having to defend her" in the face of bad publicity or whatever else, but you know, we're all at choice and there's no rule that says fans must defend Mariah. For those that have grown tired of it, I say let go of the stress, and just don't do it if you don't want to, or don't feel it is justified. For me, personally, I was 12 when VOL came out and Mariah is my fave female singer. That won't change based on what is or isn't going on with her voice. Yes, things have changed since 1990, and no I'm not a fan who feels Mariah is perfect. I think she's a human being, capable of being flawed and making mistakes like the rest of us. At the end of the day we don't know what has gone down for her despite the media commentary or her public appearances. Any claims are simply speculation based on what we think we know. At the risk of coming off like I am wearing rose coloured glasses, or being called a delusional fan, Mariah has always said music has been her saving grace and a source of healing. IMHO this is why she's touring right now. It is clear whatever transition she's going through has been hurtful/emotional and for me it isn't making an excuse to have compassion in your heart for people, even when they create their own experiences. If that makes me a "delusional lamb" well, I guess I am. Lol.

I've listened to a lot of clips and I think she sounds good. No, it isn't like 1990 in every song, but I don't expect that. It isn't nearly as dire either. I've been saying for years I'd love a Gospel and Jazz album and after that Billie Holiday cover, that hasn't changed. Lovely.

I admit it. I was guilty of hoping some of the stuff the media is reporting isn't true (divorce). I guess my attachment to MC having literally grown up with her music had me wanting things to work out. It is crystal clear now, that is not how things are playing out. I wish everyone involved to find peace moving forward.

I've had a feeling this whole time and I'm not convinced a divorce is a "done deal" the way the media is reporting. A rough patch, time to work through some stuff, some transitioning, and re-evaluating yes. But, the media jumped all over the D word from the get go, and it just doesn't feel accurate. It just doesn't. I also feel the media did twist passages from Nick's dad's book, to fuel drama about a "messy divorce" in the celebrity gossip columns.

"The purity of a child's heart before it was ever broken" (46,343)
by Deedre aka MiTodoChop @HBF from Canada

Mariah and family are certainly in my thoughts and prayers now. Although none of us who follow her work, and we're acquainted with many details of her life via "celebrity" we can't really ever claim to "know" her. Her music has been a huge part of my life's soundtrack since I was 12 when (Vision Of Love came out). The lack of promotion makes sense. Perhaps folks will cut her some slack during such a transition period. As Stacey mentioned, it takes two in a marriage and both Nick and Mariah are co-creators of their personal experience. No one is to blame, it just is what it is. Pretty telling that "It's a wrap" and "Betcha Gonna know" are on the deluxe version of MIAMTIC. That's not an accident. I have to say I respect her choice not to do a promo blitz for the record. I know it upset many lambs, but seriously, how would she genuinely promote this album without taking about the songs and potentially making the whole thing about "airing dirty laundry"? Her song lyrics on the album are clearly cathartic expression for her. Like a musical diary. Sending love to everyone involved.

I love that album from start to finish. It is in my top 3 Mariah albums, although I know many have mentioned it is not their bag lol. So many gorgeous lyric phrases, witty musical references, and down right funny jokes. To me it is a Summery record. It was always amazing to me how every track sounds current yet there's a vintage quality at the same time, reminiscent of albums like Janet Jackson's 1993 album, "Janet".

I've listened about 4 times through and I think Mariah put together a solid gem. Even as someone who doesn't always groove to her heavier hip-hop influences, there's not one song on this album I would skip over. Yes, her voice may not have the fullness it did 20 years ago, but she can sing. There's no one who can sing like her. Cry sounds like it could have been on Music Box or Daydream vocally. Faded is catchy. Dedicated is so much fun to listen to. Thirsty hooks you in, Make It Look Good is happy and perfect for summer. I don't know how one wouldn't get that chorus along with Stevie's musicianship stuck in their head. YDKWTD is pure fun. How do you not tap your foot to that? Lol. Heavenly is off the charts fantastic - wow. Talk about throwback to 1994. I might even like it more than FLAB which is really saying something. I'm a huge George Micheal fan, and I'm stoked she covered One More Try. I wasn't expecting it to sound like his version. As for the charts. I really have no clue. I'm just happy the album is so solid.
