The genius of Ribbon (36,776) by RibbonB from USA I was just listening to one of my fave songs, esp off of Memoirs, and I love the song all over again. I wish I could hear Mariah perform a stripped down version of it, with a group like Take Six or one of these clever vocal groups. I really believe that would be awesome and oh so memorable. On a lighter note (36,774) by JBfly from USA Have you all noticed that AIWFCIY is no. 1 on the holiday singles chart already? Man that song is truly a classic already. She has 6 songs on the top 200. AIWFCIY, Christmas (Baby please come home), O Holy Night, AIWFCIY Xtra festive, Santa Claus is Coming to Town and Oh Santa. Rankings are subject to change. Not only that but the covers by artist like Lady Antebellum, Michael Buble, Justin Beiber are all in there too. Mimi sure is a cash cow (no pun intended) around this time of the year. Peace. Mariah/Tommy/lambily (36,768) by RadChad from United States Okay, so who doesn't need a great team behind them to be successful? Whitney - Clive Davis, Celine - Rene Angelil, Janet - Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Beyonce - her Daddy... you get the point. So saying Tommy helped Mariah become who she is goes without saying. However, implying that she would be nothing without him, is where I disagree. We all know (or should all know) that Mariah's vocal and musical genius is all her, and everything is everything what is meant to be will be. In other words, Mariah was destined for stardom and if Tommy didn't give her the big push, it's my belief that someone else would've. Not discrediting Tommy for his investment in Mariah, but I will say he probably needed her more than she needed him in the long run. I would've actually loved to have seen the direction Mariah would've taken had she not be stifled in the beginning. Maybe she would've won more Grammies and been more acclaimed as a songwriter. I believe not having that balance in the beginning is what probably caused Mariah to go overboard with certain things i.e. dressing sexy, collaborating with every rapper that exist on the planet, partying (drinking more). Otherwise I believe she would've been just fine and continued to develop/progress artistically without the iron thumb on her. On the flip side, had she stayed with Tommy, I'm not sure if she would've been able to have the impact she's had in music to date. If Tommy would've kept her captivate, she would probably only be regarded as a great singer from the 90s that got lost in the mix. If she was held back as an artist, people may be saying "Remember Mariah Carey? Whatever happened to her?" Just a thought. (Saturday 17 November 2012; 7:07)

Tommy did help, but Mariah owns her success (36,767) by Nick from Canada Tommy was able to harness Mariah's talent to make her a superstar. The key words in that sentence is "Mariah's talent". Without Mariah's voice and songwriting prowess, this discussion is moot. Who knows if Mariah would have seen the same kind of success under a different label or mentor? What we do know was that big-voiced divas were hot commodities when Mariah was emerging, so it is plausible to assume that she would have made a name for herself regardless of Tommy. While Tommy did pigeonhole Mariah as a conservative balladeer in her early days, it was Mariah who wrote and co-produced her material, so you can't give the big boss all the credit for her success. He may have told her what road to take, but Mariah drove the car. If we think of the things that makes Mariah great as an artist, and the things she'll be remembered for, it's #1 her voice and #2 her ability to write hit melodies. I'm sorry, but that's all Mariah. Mariah owing Sony (36,763) by Scott from USA How exactly does Mariah owe Sony anything? I'm sure Mariah is thankful for Sony helping support and launch her career, but I don't think that means she owes them.They got what they wanted out of her. It was no secret that they thought of Mariah as a franchise and a way of making money for them. She certainly helped them with that. When she began to develop as an artist and branched out into RnB, Sony were worried about it. Sony hoped that after Butterfly she had the whole RnB thing out of her system. Then she started working on Rainbow and continuing down her creative path and further developing her artistry. I think they hoped she'd go back to being the Mariah they had created, the one that would may have assured some more years of huge sales such as with the Music Box and Daydream albums. Mariah's albums as she developed her creative path began to sell less albums, but so what? As she said herself even when making the Emotions albums she didn't care if it sold less than her debut. To her I'm sure it wasn't all about sales but being able to express herself the way she wanted to musically. Her struggle came with not being able to release the music she wanted to and not being able to be her own person, something Sony were holding her back from as they were more interested in keeping the franchise bringing in the big bucks. Now tell me who owes who? Does Mariah owe Sony or does Sony owes Mariah for forgetting that she too is a person and not just a cash machine? (Saturday 17 November 2012; 2:29)

Maybe you weren't paying attention in your classes during primary school, when this was taught, but there are words that indicate that you're stating an opinion. Here are some to name just a few: may, ought, sometimes, I think, usually, probably, seems, it is believed, etc. I see no words in your post that indicate such. Everything you said was stated as if you yourself know what happened behind their doors for a fact. So like I said you were out line. If anything (36,758) by Geezy from USA by way of NYC If anything in my honest opinion I feel Mariah and Tommy benefitted from one another in terms of their professional relationship. As she got the big break she always craved, also she found a form of stability and love. As for Tommy, he was still practically new in his CEO position at Sony, most of the acts on the label at the time where much older artists and Tommy had pressure on him to find an act or acts that he could guide and bring to superstar status and then walks MC with the help of BKS and the rest is history. Being married to your boss is quite the dynamic, but you can't be in a marriage ordering around your wife. Dictating to someone isn't "maturity". Listening to each other and compromising is. Statistically speaking, older men are known for caging their younger brides. Not all, but it is a common problem. Especially where paranoia of fidelity is concerned. They know their wives are young and attractive. Mariah's been on interviews and mags stating that she needed to be home at a specific time every night. That Tommy had what he called "bodyguards" that had to follow Mariah around wherever she went. Even a few producers from the mid 90's said Mottola would call them to make sure Mariah was there and would tell them how much time they'd have left because he expected her home soon. Being controlled at work and at home is what Mariah referred to as "suffocating", "controlling", and she had no time to be herself. Luckily for Thalia, Tommy couldn't be this controlling if he wanted to, he's no longer the boss. No one's on his payroll. (Friday 16 November 2012; 18:00)

Clive Davis signed Whitne, yet I don't hear anyone thanking the signers for the girls' success. That strange phenomenon seems to be reserved for Mariah. After Mottola backstabbed a friend to get his position, he found out what trouble CBS records was in. They had legends on their roster who hadn't made music in years and all the acts currently out weren't that successful. With Madonna and Whitney, the new success trend was solo female singers and they had none. Mariah is what Mottola was looking for. CBS became Columbia and their survival depended on how well Mariah succeeded. That's the reason Mottola was so controlling. Many artists, including Brenda, were kicked off the label to focus on Mariah. Columbia even went on record stating they didn't see MC as an artist, but a pop franchise. "Sing, sing" indeed, her success saved jobs and she became the new prototype. Columbia is well known for being rigid, they lost both Katy Perry and Alicia Keys for it. Both Celine and Shakira had sold millions and had fanbases on 2 continents before Mottola "signed them". Mottola can take credit for opening up exposure for their talent to be heard, but the only artist that can thank Mottola for making them a star is J.Lo. He modeled her after Mariah. He thinks he's responsible for MC's success as well, which is why he went to such lengths to destroy her career and give it to J.Lo. That's why he got fired. (Friday 16 November 2012; 17:32)

I'm sorry about that. And did I read this correctly? You want me to follow your rules of how I write my posts ("don't make it seem as though...")? Ok, I'll try and clear everything with you before I shoot it over to Eric. I also had to chuckle after reading the part "we don't know a thing about what goes on behind anyone's door when it closes". True. So how could you tell me that I'm "out of line" for my opinions when you don't know what went on behind their door either? Truth is you can't because you don't know and neither do I - so lay off. Thank you. Will, you got me smiling too. Accused of a crime I didn't commit , saying I said Mariah used Tommy to climb the ladder. I said he held it while she climbed it. Big difference. Please re-read. I have a feeling most of you have no idea what my "Adios Johnny Bravo" comment meant because if you did, you'd know that was not an insinuation of Mariah using Tommy. It was the Emancipation of Mimi (just as it was for Greg Brady when he tore up the recording contract on "The Brady Bunch" all those years ago, Google it). Anyone have anything else for me? Good. Mariah and Tommy (36,754) by Stacey from USA I have a hard time believing MC would have enjoyed the same success at another label. I don't doubt her talent. I've celebrated her as a fan for over 20 years. However, none of us know what her path would have looked like had she signed with Warner or any other label. Would she have 18 #1 hits? Who knows. None of us can say for sure she would have done as well or better at another label. I'm not going to speculate on the unknown. As far as their relationship, I believe they were in love. Look no further than the sugary Music Box album. In time, though, the relationship deteriorated quickly. Looking In is a cry for help if I've ever heard (and a sort of anthem for myself too). The song Butterfly was what MC hoped Tommy would have said to her. He didn't and the rest is history. I can't say anything more. (Friday 16 November 2012; 5:02)

Berry Gordy built careers (36,753) by RibbonB from USA Now there's a man who built a record label, changed music in so many ways and built the foundations of countless careers from Michael Jackson to Diana Ross and the Supremes, the Temptations etc. And Gordy wrote music himself, which many don't know or seem to forget. Love him or hate him, and many of his artists did both, he has built a legacy in the music industry and culture in general. Mariah wrote her songs and sang them like no other. She started on a good established label and yes the co. exec had a vested interest, but he did what any good business man would have done, he signed a fantastic star, Mariah did the rest.
