Mariah performs onstage in three bespoke arm slings
You've got to give injured megastar Mariah Carey credit - she stayed true to the old showbiz adage: "the show must go on". Despite suffering a painful dislocated shoulder during a music video shoot, the singer took to the stage for a charity concert like a true professional.
And like any dedicated showgirl, her costume was of the utmost importance - so she dressed her cumbersome cast in no less than three differently designed arm slings. Most divas are known for their outfit changes, and clearly Mariah felt the need to change her sling too, for her special guest appearance with the New York Philharmonic orchestra on Saturday night.
First she swapped a diamante-encrusted sling for a white feathered look and later she switched to a dramatic dark feathered one, taking a few style notes from Natalie Portman in Black Swan.
The 43 year-old mother-of-two injured her shoulder last Sunday during the shoot for a remix of "Beautiful" directed by her husband Nick Cannon. Nick confirmed his wife had slipped and fallen from a raised platform in a pair of high heels. He described his wife as "a trouper" describing the accident as "pretty serious".
She was treated at New York's Hospital for Special Surgery. Although leaving hospital in a wheelchair, she still had her sense of humour quipping: "Well, that was fun." Later she tweeted: "Still in a lot of pain - cracked rib, fractured shoulder, bruises everywhere, but the show must go on." But she refused to cancel her appearance at Central Park.
As Mariah stepped out from Manhattan's Ritz Carlton Hotel on Saturday evening surrounded by photographers and fans, the severe bruising to her upper, right arm was clearly visible. But she still looked beautiful in a floor length, white gown and dripping in diamonds. Her matching slings were a last minute addition to her wardrobe.
Moments before taking the stage she tweeted: "Just about to take the stage with the NY Philharmonic, excited." And she wowed 60,000 concert-goers with an impressive open-air performance singing a medley of her classic hits as well as new material.
