Mariah Carey, Questlove and the cast of "Sesame Street" will headline the 89th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, store officials announced Monday. The holiday extravaganza will also include four new giant character balloons, bringing the total to 17. Debuting this year are Scrat the saber-toothed squirrel and his acorn from the "Ice Age" films, Red from the Angry Birds game, the dinosaur mascot from Sinclair Oil and an updated Ronald McDonald.
More than 8,000 people will take part in the event, including scores of balloon handlers, more than 1,000 clowns, 1,100 cheerleaders and 12 marching bands. They will all walk the parade route from 77th St. to 34th St. on November 26. The long roster of parade performers includes Cirque du Soleil cast members, Pat Benatar, Andy Grammer, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T's, Daughtry, Trey Songs and Jordin Sparks.
The parade attracts an estimated 3.5 million spectators and 50 million television viewers nationwide. Broadway performances will include "Fiddler on the Roof", "Finding Neverland", "The King & I", "On Your Feet", and "Something Rotten". "The famed procession promises to deliver an unrivaled spectacle of magic for millions of spectators lining the streets of New York City and millions more watching it unfold in homes across the nation," said Amy Kule, the parade's executive producer.
