Mariah is impressive in debut role
All that glitters has been gold for Mariah Carey musically, but can she repeat her success on film? Hitmaker Jimmy Jam seems to think so. Having produced mega-hits for the likes of Janet Jackson, Shaggy and Sting, Jam and co-producer Terry Lewis are bringing their golden touch as soundtrack composers of Carey's big screen debut "Glitter", set to come out Labor Day weekend.
In a recent interview, Jam told me that he has seen portions of the film for the composing purposes, and he definitely likes what's up there on screen. "I think that she does an impressive job, and if you enjoy her singing you'll enjoy the movie because there is a lot of singing in the movie," Jam said. "She plays an up-and-coming singer in the movie, and while it's not exactly autobiographical, there are a lot of similarities."
The film, directed by actor/filmmaker Vondie Curtis-Hall (TV's "Chicago Hope") is set as a love story with the New York City club scene set as a backdrop. "All of her fans are going to love it, and for anybody who enjoyed a movie like 'The Bodyguard', because it has some melodrama mixed in," Jam said.
Although the film doesn't come out until Aug. 31, the soundtrack will hit stores 10 days earlier. Jam and Lewis have produced six songs for the album, which features Carey as well as other guest artists.
Carey's first single off the soundtrack is called "Loverboy", an up-tempo song featuring a funky bass sound and rock guitars. The song features cameos from rappers Da Brat (who has a co-starring role in "Glitter"), Ludacris, 22, Shawna and a sampling of "Candy" from funk legends Cameo.
