Mariah Carey in Tivoli
The superstar's career has been a rollercoaster ride as of late. In the 90's, she was one of the best-selling artists and the best-selling female artist of all time with over 100 million records sold, incl. 500,000 in Denmark. But the new millenium wasn't kind to the now 35-year-old American.
After a supporting role in the 1999 movie "The Bachelor" with Renée Zellweger and Chris O'Donnell, she had more ambitions for the silver screen. She co-wrote and was the leading actress in the 2001 film "Glitter", which bombed just as the accompanying soundtrack. "Charmbracelet", which followed the year after, didn't do much better.
Suddenly people saw her as washed up superstar with her diva behaviour out of control and looking like she'd been to visit a plastic surgeon and at her age, it was all wrong for her to try to be hip and cool. But in April of this year, her tenth studio album, "The Emancipation Of Mimi", where Mimi - as Mariah is apparently is called by friends - both sounded, looked and acted her age. And thus she had the best first week sales of her entire career, just like the single "We Belong Together" topped the Billboard chart - the 16th time Carey has topped that tally. Only Beatles (20) and Elvis Presley (18) have more #1 singles.
Very early on, it was evident that little Mariah had a special singing talent. When she was just two years old, she sang along to a difficult passage from the opera "Rigoletto". She wrote her own songs from age 13 and at the age of 20, she released her self-titled debut album, which spawned four #1 songs, incl. "Vision Of Love".
The time has come for the best-selling and most succesful female artist of all time to play Tivoli. She rarely sets foot in Europe and she has never been to Denmark before. But on July 2nd, she is playing Live 8 in London and is also doing some promotional activities in Germany. And thus an hour's work in Denmark became convenient for the superstar. (BT Denmark)
