"Rainbow" era (81,521)
by Billy from Greece
| |
|
|
Just a reminder that the "Rainbow" era boasts some of Mariah's hottest remixes. While many feel that "Rainbow" is not her strongest work, she was really creative with the songs and samples she used, ultimately creating a fully enjoyable body of work. I'm living for a deluxe anniversary edition of "Rainbow" that will have the "Love Hangover" and "If You Should Ever Be Lonely" versions of "Heartbreaker", the "Make It Last Remix" of "TGIFY" and the "Triumphant Revival Mix" of "CTTA" all in one place. Mind you that all of these remixes have new vocals, so if you take them as a whole, the studio album plus these remixes, you have a truly satisfying album to cherish for days.

I absolutely love Teena Marie. Such a genius. I would love to hear MC take on one of her tracks, especially considering how loved Teena was by R&B enthusiasts. Right on the top of my head, I can more easily hear MC sing "Now That I Have You", which was co-produced by Richard Rudolph, Minnie Riperton's husband. "Yes, Indeed" would also be a great choice, or even "If I Were Bell". Teena Marie really has a flawless discography.

Interesting concept. One of my "clusters" (I guess the moodier one) is comprised of the following: "Alone In Love", "Sent From Up Above", "Do You Think of Me", "Long Ago", "The Roof", "I Still Believe (Stevie J. Remix)", "All My Life", "Lullaby", "For the Record", "HATEU", "Faded".

"My All" (Divas Live) (81,383)
by Billy from Greece
| |
|
|
Lately, I've been obsessed with Mariah on the first VH1 Divas live concert. The way she owns the stage with "My All" from the very first step she takes is monumental. Every breath she takes, every muscle she moves, every look she gives, everything is flawless here. Not to mention the resonance in the first chorus in the "cause I can't go on" part. Just shattering. Next month it will be twenty years since the show took place.

Re: Outtake vocals (81,307) (81,308)

Dennis, most artists record multiple takes of a songs and then combine the best parts to create the best outcome, at least when they record their vocals separately from an orchestra or instrumental part. It is a process called "comping". Barbra Streisand also does it. Here's a description: "Comping is when several vocal takes of a song are done. Afterward, the artist or producer listens to the takes and chooses the best words, phrases or lines from each take and puts them together as a whole, composite track that sounds seamless."

This is super cute. The twins have grown so much, and Rock looks more and more like Mariah, especially with those curls. But what in the ham sandwich is Nick wearing? He also has to lose the turban pronto.

Big Jim Wright (81,165)

I really wonder what the deal is with Big Jim and why exactly he was kicked out of the team (if that's the case). Every now and then he posts on social media some not that enigmatic statements, which I assume refer to the Mariah situation, though even after they "broke up" he still praised her. Hm.

A teeny-tiny snippet of Mariah singing "Sweetheart" live during the filming of "I Still Believe". This jam has some serious funk in this arrangement. Love it.

Haha the cotton socks. I agree with what you said. She looks absolutely gorgeous in the black dress wearing her hair curly. Just stunning glamorous. But, as you said, it is during this era that she really started talking somehow in a lethargic way during interviews. Mind you, though, that it was around this time that she was about to become pregnant so maybe organically she was going through stuff. This is also, I think, something that many fans tend to forget, namely, that Mariah may have been through various situations health-wise over the years that we are not aware of and all we see is a small interview, which makes several people trying to deduct some deep truth about her state mentally, emotionally, career-wise and what not. She is human, after all.

Thank you for the barcode. That was really helpful as I've been able to find it on amazon.uk as well. (Let me also correct a typo I made previously: I meant Blu-spec, not Blue. )

Why do I feel this song does not get much love over the last years? I adore the background "oooh baby" parts. Here's a lovely latter day performance. The arrangement here is so good.

Once more, I appreciate your detailed response. Also, thanks for suggesting the other outlets. I thought Taobao was only for clothes, so I'll check that, as well as Fromjapan (though, I get what you mean about the "addictive" part of the whole situation ). I also agree about the difference when it comes to SHM-CD. I first became aware of it with Diana Ross's (wonderful) "Baby It's Me" album. I initially had an early 1990s CD, which had a thin and somehow metallic sound. The 2014 SHM-CD version, on the other hand, wow, what a difference. Everything was amplified, but not in a compressed way, and the sound was brighter (but not shrill). I also got a 2014 Japanese reissue of Teena Marie's (gorgeous) "Irons in the Fire," which is not a SHM-CD but compared to the early 1990s CD, it's like night and day. Amazing sound, there is so much more "depth" and clarity. Good to know that Janet's SHM-CD of "Control" shows improvement as I really want to get it for some time. Also, I've been totally mesmerized by "Charmbracelet" all over again lately but I've always felt some songs sounded somehow "compressed" ("Yours" for instance) or there was something going on with the mastering at some places, though this might as well be the way it was intended to be. So, I was hoping that the SHM-CD version would make it "shine" properly. Glad to know that there's at least some improvement. Once again, thanks for replying.

Emotions (80,874)
by Billy from Greece

I listened to the whole album the other day after a while and realized that, while I love it, there is a feeling of "echo" throughout the whole album that I don't think is present on other MC albums and creates a sort of strange vibe. Has anyone else noticed that?

Dear tadatorao, thank you so much for such a detailed reply. In fact, you've answered to a couple more questions that I've had in mind for a while. I have to day that I agree as far as SHM-CDs are concerned. I remember coming across a SHM-CD of "Charmbracelet" on eBay a while back and I regret not getting it as I cannot find any available copied anywhere, contrary to SHM-CD copies of Mariah's subsequent Universal albums. I've always wondered whether the SHM-CD format would do "Charmbracelet" more justice sonically. I also get what you mean with the "airy" quality. I'm not a huge audiophile connoisseur or get as deep as some people do, but lately I've been trying to locate the best sounding versions of CDs I love, as several times you can tell the difference.

Has anyone bought any of the Blue-Spec reissues of some of Mariah's albums (f.i. Butterfly, Rainbow) that have been out in recent years? Is there a difference in sound?
