Mariah's version (103,092)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
Mariah is definitely not in a good place vocally to accomplish what Taylor is doing while she's still super popular. She should've done something like that back in 2010-2013, but I guess that ship has sailed. This is just beautiful. Had she re-worked some of her hits around this time, she would've come out a winner. Sadly, Mariah can't sing two words straight these days. It is sad, but evidenced by her last performance, it is true.

Taylor Swift just recently released Speak Now Taylor's Version. She is definitely a business woman. I wish MC would re-record more of her most famous songs and her favorites that didn't get much love on the radio or albums. She could do it with the right producer.

I didn't even realize about the "RIP" from your post. I'm here ready to start listening to "Universal Mother" when the news of her dead just came on TV. Sinéad O'Connor and Dolores O'Riordan had very tormented lives, but their artistry was just unique and great. May she rest in peace.

One of the greatest voices ever. One of my biggest musical references. I highly recommend her album Universal Mother, it's pure perfection from start to finish. And I also recommend her book from 2021, Rememberings. With Mariah's memoir, one of the best autobiographies I've read in the recent years.

TLC's Red Light Special, George Michael's Father Figure. Bliss is the only MC song I can be horizontal with another with. Hey, ya'll promised not to laugh. "Daydream was only huge because of Fantasy remix with O.D.B. and One Sweet Day. The rest of the album is just copycat of those two singles."
Uh... No. While the O.D.B remix was more popular, I've always preferred her solo version.
There are better songs on Daydream than "Fantasy" and "One Sweet Day", way better. I won't tell you "copycat my ass" because that would be inappropriate to say on this board, but "Underneath the Stars" is far better than OSD, just to name one.

I would not agree that she, in 1997, took her clothes of and never put it back on because her voice was "overheating". That sounds a bit harsh and offensive towards her right as woman to dress as she pleases. Especially now in 2023.
I would rather see her happy (as in Honey video in racy clothes) then covered up to her neck, looking miserable. I am a lamb since 1990 but I prefer her work from Butterfly era until now.
Daydream was only huge because of Fantasy remix with O.D.B. and One Sweet Day. The rest of the album is just copycat of those two singles.

MC should come clean (102,991)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
Fast Internet, Social Media and Streaming contributed to the disruption of the revenue model music labels used to have. Music labels are not making that much money from artists anymore. Big contracts like in the 90's are a thing of the past.
Mariah being dropped by Epic doesn't surprise me. She hasn't released an album in 5 years and the longer she waits, the less interested people are.
Let's not be sentimental about it, she's a legend, but labels don't care about that, it's just business. If there's a time for Mariah to go independent, that time is now.
As for how Madonna can hold up, well, in only a couple of venues, Madonna makes more money than Mariah would make in one short tour. Madonna has also being bundling up a copy of whatever album she's released at a specific moment with concert tickets.
Unless you're a prolific songwriter like Mariah, artists have always made their money from concerts, since label tentacles couldn't reach that far into that domain, even though things are changing.

I think "Never Forget You", "Anytime You Need a Friend", "Everything Fades Away" and "Without You" are very emotional. Mariah's voice on "Never Forget You" is makes me feel her pain, it's like something is piercing her soul, specially during the climax. And let's not talk about "Daydream", those journalists simply didn't like her, that's all.

Mariah has been recording for quite some time now. She said she would be fishing for a streaming deal for "The Butterfly Lounge", but it seems to be the general interest in her doesn't warrant the money they would spend. The Clark Sisters confirmed Mariah had them sing their asses off on a recording session, Tanaka was following her every move during the Butterfly "Lounge Sessions" to document the creative process, she also said she had recorded a lot during the pandemic because she had supposedly gotten her voice back. She actually has a lot of material, but I guess she hasn't been able to secure a viable record deal. She could release "The Rarities 2" to alleviate the pain of her fans for not having new music from her for five years now, but oh well, it is what it is.

Had Mariah written more frequently for other artists, she would've definitely gotten the public recognition she deserves as a songwriter. When the voice started failing about two decades ago, she should've taken advatage of her pen-game to write and produce for others, but that was never the case.

I think the "problem" with Mariah as a songwriter in terms of being reconigzed is that her voice is so powerfull/beautiful and it's just so "in your face" that people can't manage to look more deeply into her. It's like it's impossible for people to understand that behind the talented superhuman vocals there is also a formidable songwriter/producer and the fact that she is super pretty doesn't help either. It's a "too good to be true" moment.

Is that why the board has been so quiet about her performance? Have you noticed that her hand doesn't go up in air like her early 90's and 2000's performances? It stays very close to her waist now like to say that she is not feeling like she will be able to execute her notes successfully.

The BET Award nominations 2023 are finally here (102,863)
by Edward from USA

It's sad we just have so few artists from the 90's still standing. Mariah definitely deserves her flowers. She not only paved the way for many, but her contribution to music has been significant. I think her diva persona has prevented some from taking her seriously though, but respect where respect is due. And yes, Latto treated Mariah with the respect and admiration that she so well deserves.

When I saw this article I had to go back and watch MC's performance with Latto. It was so sweet to see Latto give props and flowers to MC. The industry is really starting to piss me off between the Grammys and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. No MC can't win everything but give her her flowers. Before they died, I feel like Whitney, Luther, MJ and Prince were given proper tributes and accolades. Now that Celine is sick, does that mean they'll give her a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction and MC will be overlooked yet again? All we have left from our era is MC, Janet and Madonna. Give MC her flowers.

Actually you've said the people on the list are there instead of her because they were more popular than her at the height of her career which is an opinion, not a fact, and is undercut by objective data.
The truth is that the people on the list are on the list mostly for ventures they have done outside of music, not their music careers. Good for them and their teams.

All those figures are speculative. They usually estimate those numbers by the value of companies they're heavily involved in, celebrities do not go telling how much they are worth. We know approximaly Oprah's value based on the value of Harpo, same for Jessica Simpson and even Rihanna, but it's basically impossible to know. When Forbes and the lambs were sure Mariah was worth approximately 500 M, her prenup with Nick showed she came into theirr marriage with 150 M, very far from the numbers Forbes and other online outlets had been stating for a decade. In short, do not believe Forbes.

So on the first of June, Forbes published a list of the richest self-made women, 100 women in fields of careers. For music, Rihanna (20) leads $1.4B, Taylor (34), Madonna (45), Beyoncé (48), Celine (56), Dolly Parton (59) and Barbra (61) with $430M. I cannot help but think if this list is even accurate or does Mariah not share her income accurately in tax books lol.

Mariah was the most qualified but she wasn't good at it. She was rather boring and couldn't articulate her thoughts easily. Everybody was always waiting for those enlightening critique moments, but they never came. Wait, there was an enlightening moment when she became the first judge ever to get late to the show set, the other judges had already started taping without her, and when she showed up, she said: "If you want a diva, you have to pay the price." Many times she went on her usual diva tangents and rather than being a judge, she was more worried about being nice. As much as I hate to say it, Nicki was better at it. Some people are or have a well of knowledge, they could be great at using it, but few have the skill to teach it. Mariah is great as a mentor, she's shown it on some shows, but she should stay away from judging on singing competitions. The good things is that she knows it.

I can't believe I'm bringing this up here and now after all these years but it's got to be said. And I'm not going to apologize for it. Mariah Carey was the most qualified to be a judge on American Idol than anyone else. Period. I'm not discounting anyone else's talents at all. I liked most of them, except the one we "don't know " and that other one that dared to attack MC. The nerve. I really wish Mariah had stayed on the show longer than one season because I enjoyed her mentoring the contestants. She actually knows a lot about the music industry and could have helped so many others. It's a shame what happened during her season. I hope we can one day get another show where she helps nurture and mentors young talent but without all the drama. She's just such a legend and a living Icon. We need to appreciate her because tomorrow is not promised. Remember, she owes no one anything.
