It seems like an artsy concept photoshoot. *shrug* Very stylized in that you do "play" and put on a "mask" for the duration of the shoot.

Hi Mimi L. Just my .02 cents, but I think this relates to Licia's earlier comment about rappers and drugs. A lot of rappers reference drugs in their songs, but don't actually take them. It's a lot more common than one might typically think. Where the line gets blurred a lot in music is how much a song is about the artist's personal life and how much it is not. A lot of dad's can relate to drama in the legal system. Just because he raps something, doesn't mean everything he's saying is autobiographical. Same with Mariah and her songs. That's why she says things like "I like to leave things ambiguous so the listener can relate it to their experience."

Beautiful performance. Confident and full tone. I don't know if people have been checking out recent Vegas footage, but there are some really lovely ones and maybe it's just me, but it's nice focusing on the music.

Fantastic article, thought provoking questions, and for all the accusations she faces about not acknowledging where her voice is at. She's very transparent here. Some days are better than others. It's an honest answer.

Thanks Giovanni. It's been really lovely to see the respect for Selena as an artist and a person on the messageboard, and cool to know she has some fans among the lambs. I like your song choices too. There isn't much in her catalogue I don't enjoy but that's just me. Lol. Some of the more obscure Tejano tracks are just "ok". Her contribution to music may have been short, but to me, the music is timeless, and she has become a legendary artist in her own way.

I love the Butterfly Garden interview. And the one she does that same era in Australia. She's lying on a coach in a brown outfit. But she gives a lot of insightful answers about writing music, music genres, and mixing during that interview which I really enjoy hearing about.

Don't even bother with the other one lol. I meant the Biography Channel special part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5. Oops lol. Not sure if it works on mobile.

Licia / Selena (63,251)
by Deedre aka MiTodoChop @HBF from Canada
| |
|
|
Hi Licia. Yes Selena has had a profound impact on me. I'm not sure I'd be able to put it in words for you to be honest. It really goes even beyond her gift as a singer, dancer and performer. It's the person behind all of that. The most genuinely kind, humble, genuine soul, who literally remained unaware of her stardom. People would tell her that her talents belonged in the company of artists like Gloria Estefan, Janet, Whitney and Mariah etc, and she would literally say "No, I'm not that, I'm just like everybody else." I would highly recommend watching the documentary "Selena Remembered". It's narrated by Edward James Olmos and a really lovely look at her career and in general that there is nothing about her that isn't 100% genuine. As for songs I would definitely recommend "No Me Queda Mas". It is considered a classic now. Her signature song is "Como La Flor" ("Like the flower") known around the world it's featured pretty heavily in the movie so, you'll probably recognize it. There is so much of her music that I love. There's a cumbia called Besitos that is really fun. It's more obscure as it's an earlier song. I love her attitude in a song called Que Creias. She has a routine she does with this song live where she brings a guy on stage for the song to "tell him off". Lol. The power of her emotional delivery in a song called Buenos Amigos ("Good Friends") demonstrates how much she could emote through a vocal. She has this way of making possible for you to feel the songs. it's really something you either have or you don't. She had it in spades. She does an awesome cover of "A Boy Like That" from West Side Story. She recorded 3 songs for a cameo appearance in the film "Don Juan Demarco" staring Johnny Depp. They didn't wind up using all the songs, but they are more that traditional mariachi flavor. She only had a certain set time to record the vocals and was so upset that she had a cold the day they went into the studio. But when you listen to the tracks she just nails them, you can't even tell. Lol. The songs are called "El Toro Relajo" (this one is in the movie). Selena appears as a singer. "Tu Solo Tu" and "Siempre Hace Frio". There's a song on her dreaming of you album called "Baila Conmigo" that I always crank loud lol. Many fans love her Spanish version of The Pretenders song "Back on the Chain Gang" (Fotos y Recuerdos). On one of her earlier albums she has a song called "Ven Conmigo". I really like it because it shows how much the music in the band evolved and how they were always fusing traditional cultural sound but making it more modern and access accessible. Songs like "I Could Fall In Love Donde Quiera Que Estas" show her diversity. The roots of her career in Tejano music, but she had such a wide range of what she was capable of singing. Other fan faves aside from what you already know are "No Debes Jugar Amor Prohibido and El Chico Del Apartamento 512. History Channel also has a nice documentary too.

It's so nice to see the shout outs for Selena. Thanks Enwar, RJJ112 and Licia. I have always had a very intense love for music at around 12, started seriously building a music collection Mariah and Selena are the two I have collected very seriously from cd singled to video footage and other rare gems. There will never be another artist like Selena. She had the chops. If you've ever seen concert footage she's just an incredible live performer, a very sweet, humble, genuine person, who worked her butt off, loved her family and loved life. There are two live albums. "Selena Live" which came out in 1993 and was a free concert for the fans in her home town. She and her band won a Grammy for that album, but there's actually more of that concert that isn't on the record. There's also a live CD/DVD of her last concert in Houston February 26, 1995. Amor Prohibido is her most successful album before she passed. Dreaming Of You is just awesome, her crossover into English market was inevitable. But for me her music is timeless. There are 3 albums her family worked with her label to release. "Selena Anthology" which has many cool different arrangements of her songs and some early vocal performances. The cumbia and mariachi versions on Anthology are awesome. "Enamorada De Ti" is really cool because they took her original vocals and recorded new music underneath and paired her with current arrests (2012) for duets and completely new sound keeping the music fresh as ever. "La Leyenda" came out in 2010 and to me is a great set that spans her entire career giving you a mix of all her Spanish, live performances and her English music.

RJj112, thanks for sharing how you came to love Nariah. I love hearing those kinds of stories. I agree, it is ISV's legendary single. I first heard MC on the radio. They played Vision Of Love and Love Takes Time back to back and I asked my babysitter to take me to the music store so I could buy the tape with my allowance lol.

(Laughing), I know right? You are a sweetheart Enwar. I noticed the same thing about Vegas verses being cut. But she's clearly been doing her thing the vocals sound great. I better not talk too much about Selena here, so as not to upset anyone since this site is all about Mariah. But I will say, that I absolutely adore her which is putting it mildly. And I'm not even technically Latina but I swear, my soul has never known that. Lmao. Music has no boundaries.

I understand what you're saying. Totally. And I'm not knocking #1's and public relatability. If Mariah wanted things differently, she'd do different things. It all boils down to how success is defined too. Whether success be strictly about commercial markers or a much more experimental broader artistic approach. I'm open to all aspects of the spectrum. There is music I love that's deemed a huge commercial success. and then there's music I love (like in Prince's case) that is very obscure and didn't get much public attention. I don't label the more obscure as "flopping" I see them as successes in different ways, so it all depends on how one chooses look at things. For right now at least, Mariah's focus doesn't appear to be on new music. And to make fun of herself the way she does, she clearly understands that things like wearing a ball gown in a bathtub or a nightie during an interview, doesn't come across as "girl next door" approachable to some people. I just won't choose to be upset or angry with her about it. To me, it's wasted energy.

I always enjoy your posts Edward. As far as the JLo and Mariah thing goes, at this point they are both giving it energy in their responses to media outlets, so I'm not expecting it to go away anytime soon. Probably a controversial view here, and I won't go into it too much because this is not a board for the type of discussion but honestly no one is a victim of anything. Whether we know it or not, we unconsciously create our experience by the way we respond to life. Mariah is not a victim. Jennifer is not a victim - they both play a role in how they choose to respond/react. What the world will say one must be "right" and the other must be "wrong". This is how we make sense of things. We categorize them which leads to conflict, division and blame cycle. What if it just is what it is and people left it alone without the "good" or "bad" labels attached? No more attacking Jennifer or Mariah just let them express and respond without the labels? We might think we have the full picture of someone's experience, but we never do. Truly. Lol. I'm not sure if you were addressing my earlier post about Prince Mariah and Marilyn, but I'm not waiting for Mariah to "do anything" or "go the way of anything". I mean sure, I'd love more music but I don't need her to have a hit or be relevant or relocatable to be happy. I love Mariah, her artistic genus inspires me, but I don't pin my happiness on her. My happiness isn't on anything external. That's an inside job. Though Mariah's music does bring me great joy, I actually require nothing of her. That probably sounds strange, oh well. Lol. If it were my choice, I wouldn't touch "reality" stuff with a ten foot poll. But it's not my choice, it's not my business. Mariah is going to do whatever is coming up for her, whether it's viewed as self-destructive or a train-wreck, or whether it's viewed as a constructive career move. We're not in control of any of that. I'm in no place to judge her. Even things that might appear to be damaging or self-sabotage have their purpose in the grand scheme of things.

Mariah likes the Marilynesque image, it's very clear that it's part of her public persona. The expectation of her to change that I don't quite get. Sure, it turns some people off. It did in Marilyn's career as well. Prince pushed the envelope at every turn, and lived on his terms despite what anyone said about his choices. MC is not if she doesn't have the desire to. If people aren't willing to look beyond the surface, then they probably never genuinely liked her to begin with. It doesn't take much to understand there is more to Mariah then her "dahlings" her diamonds and her "Mariahisms" and her cleavage. If people really want to get to know the true and genuine Mariah, they will spend some time on YouTube chronicling her in-depth interviews and contributions to music. If they don't, they will simply make a snap judgement, label her a B with an ich and keep going. To me, spending time comparing people and being upset about who is coming off as the "better person" is a pretty futile exercise. We all have flaws and are capable of making choices that miss the mark. To me "unconditional" means acceptance without judgment. Doesn't mean I would make some of the same choices MC does if they don't feel right for me. What it does mean is I don't have any judgement toward her for what she chooses.

I love Mariah with all my heart. For me though I'm just not interested in the way "don't know her" gets so much attention. I'm not interested in little animated moving graphics on her Instagram and I honestly wasn't even aware who Wendy Williams was until sometime last year. Lol. Stuff like that is all drama infused sensationalized junk that isn't truly important and has nothing to do with why I love Maeiah. I can't invest in media driven stuff because it's just not what it is made out to be. I follow her social media but I'm not on it everyday or anything. I'm interested in Mariah the genuine person, creator, artist, musician.
