Thank you for the shout out in response to my post about Mariah's public image. I appreciate what you shared and your kind response. I meant to thank you, then but I had to go do some things for work. By the time the thought came up again, the post was several pages back. Lol. Yep. If MC wanted things different, they would be.

Ok this will be my last post on this topic (before I continue I just want to say despite varied viewpoints on her vocals I really do absolutely adore Mariah's performance that night). I'm well aware Mariah held back and stayed in the background out of respect for Aretha. I have seen all the interviews about it and I don't take what she says as a huge slam or bash against Celine. I have always taken it as Mariah stating her views, her opinion on the approach to singing with a legend period. Mariah and Celine had different approaches to the same thing. Why shouldn't that be ok? I have never understood this in relation to this discussion. It doesn't make one person right and the other wrong. MC is not wrong for choosing to hang back, and Celine isn't wrong for singing a couple riffs. It's not like she took over the whole song and it clearly wasn't planned out. A huge part of performing is what comes out right there in the moment with passion and heart.

Stacey, I guess because there's this belief that there must be drama and competition behind everything lol. It's completely untrue. No person is any less deserving of having their moments to shine and share their gifts. Celine had a moment. Doesn't mean there was any ill intent behind it. Frankly, it shouldn't matter quite so much whether people have "legend" status or not. Yes, it's a lovely acknowledgement of achievement, which is deserved, but should it be used to place people up on a pedestal so high that we stop sharing with other people? No. Strip away titles, money, fame culture etc we're all human beings with the same potential whether it is music or something else.

Congratulations on the new edition to your family, May. Nice to see you back posting. I don't know, I'm looking forward to the docu-series. If it's anything like the "Through The Rain" special or the bonus stuff on "The Adventures Of Mimi" tour DVD it'll give a nice behind the scenes look plus some funny and silly sketches for good measure. Unless Mariah suddenly changes her personality, there will always be people who glance at things really quickly and only see "diva". If she is unhappy with that, I imagine she'd do something about it.

Re: Media's response to WWHL (62,394) (62,418)

It is no shock to me. The media is all about nitpicking. She's not stating anything she hasn't said before. The original question was about Beyonce/ The interviewer (at the time) turned it to JLo. Mariah said "I don't know her" as in, I don't know her well enough to feel comfortable making a comment". She was never saying I don't know who she is, at least that's not how I took it. Come on, that's just not true. "I don't know her" is a brief comment that took on a life of its own. For some reason people seem to love the idea of two women fighting. Doesn't make sense to me, but whatever. Am I this huge massive JLo fan? Nope. I like a few of her songs. A few of her movies are cute. I adore Selena and have been a fan of hers almost as long as MC, and I thought Jennifer did her best work playing Selena. She really honored her during the movie in a way that still gives me chills to this day. As a diehard Selena fan her commitment to the role meant a lot. Mariah and Selena are my two favorite female singers. Don't really follow Jennifer's career very closely, but to me it is just ridiculous to hate on someone under the guise of defending Mariah. Not saying anyone is a saint, because clearly everyone has flaws. But, the notion that people must feud to prove their Mariah fandom, is completely insane.

I agree Licia the after show had some nice parts and the Prince mention really resonated with me. I feel a lot of what people term as antics from Mariah stems from the fact that she absolutely hates being misinterpreted and pretty much everything she says can be skewed and dissected tons of different ways that she doesn't intend but it seems like she understands that avoiding questions also backfired. I delicate balance to always be so fatuous of what you say.

I thought she answered the questions during the interview. The JLo thing is so old. Yes, they will probably never "hang out". Doesn't mean there is a full out "feud". If the fans and the media would just let the silly thing die, neither one of them would ever bring it up again. I felt she was authentic answering the questions throughout.

Mimi L, the whole album has a very summery record vibe to it to me. I love the wit humor referencing the lyrics of other artists, and very distinct Mariahisms, with her George Foreman and her Jimmy Choo's and her clever homage to Cindi Lauper's "Time After Time". I also love the play on words she uses throughout. It's a very visual album lyrically too. I think she had fun taking on characters in the songs very much like a diary (or whatever mood you're in when you write a diary entry). She managed to balance throwback musically, and yet be contemporary at the same time which I've always found to be quite brilliant on this record. I get that it's not for everybody. For me it has this mood and atmospheric quality about it that is very different from other work. It can be ethereal at times yet lyrically songs like H.A.T.E.U. Angel's Cry and Languishing all pack a emotional punch with the storyteller depth to them. I think the lyrics to H.A.T.E.U lent themselves to a different video concept. No sense wasting energy on what can not be changed though. It's such a beautiful record for me. Up there with Butterfly and Daydream.

I actually agree with a lot of what you've said Ian. I don't know Mariah. She inspires me a lot. Her music in a lot of ways has been the soundtrack to my life. I could see aspects of myself in her music and in how she is as a person to some extent but I don't know her. Her choices are not my business. So, having a whole laundry list of opinions about her and her life, doesn't mean much at all in that respect. She still going to do whatever she decides whether I'm into her career and her persona or have an opinion about it or not. Will she change her image? I've no freaking clue. What I do know is if Mariah wanted to project a different public image, that's what she'd be doing. Am I comfortable letting my "girls" out for the world to view etc? Nope. Not my thing. But I also don't think it's my place to judge anyone. That's not my place. Again, my opinion so those who don't agree with that, grain of salt, right?

Moving on. The deer eating popcorn is adorable. If people have their minds already made up around what is considered "positive" and what is considered overly "negative" there isn't much room for flexibility is there? Lol. Just because we don't always agree on opinions doesn't stop opinions. Me? I find the personal attacks a bit much at times, but hey, that's an opinion. We can all lighten up some. It wouldn't hurt anything, it's just a freaking messageboard. Lol.

Every person who posts has a choice and until basic respect for each other (including Mariah) becomes more important than the desire for drama and infighting, don't expect anything on the board to shift. It's one thing to have balanced varied points of view, it's quite another to be constantly on the attack. I'm probably known here as one of the more positive lambs. Maybe too positive for some people, that's fine. I honestly don't care what anyone thinks of me. Doesn't mean I wear rose colored glasses and immune to making mistakes. I just don't have any judgment of her for having human tendencies and yes even pretty deep emotional baggage and insecurities. Name a human who doesn't? Being a celeb doesn't make you immune, it's just that most people look at the appearance of things, and not beyond the surface as to what might be going on for people underneath. When you are willing to do that, you'll always find compassion not judgement. Anyone can have an opinion. But it doesn't mean an opinion is going to change or influence what someone chooses, so do we really need to battle over opinions? It all boils down to choice. In that sense, opinions are pretty irrelevant actually. People still do what they do.

It has never made sense to me to stress ove the record to the point that it can be. Being upset with another artist? Wasted energy lol I mean, to each their own, but stats don't make or break artistry. Mariah is in a different space in her life right now. Not saying she doesn't want success, but she is highly intelligent. Her priorities and focus have shifted, and that's ok. It's the fans that want "world domination in music". Mariah to me wants to do her thing on het terms and right now that means strong family life balanced with career. To me, she's not focused on the industry machine like at one time. I say this without judgement, malice or blame in any way.

Very happy for you Jenny. At the end of the day, it's about the music and the person and the experience of fun. Perhaps the fans (in general) will lighten up a bit sometime. One day, just like Selena and Prince and Marilyn Monroe, Mariah won't be around to inspire or be able to see at a live show, or to record new music or to impact people in many positive ways.

Correct me if I'm wrong. These awards are chosen by the organization/community are they not? She's unquestionably a LGBT icon. While I agree MC isn't the first celeb that comes to mind in terms of LGBT advocacy work, she most certainly is an icon representing all forms of equality, whether that be facing some kind of disability, adversity, be it bi-racial, overcoming obstacles, including equality in the LGBT community. It's not like Mariah's out there screaming "Pick me, pick me, I deserve this award." She's just doing her thing. The community obviously sees fit to recognize that she's a symbol of unconditional acceptance for many people. There's no denying her influence to any group that has felt misunderstood.
