HATEU also isn't a song that you can really sing along too. LA was too stuck in his "upbeat" followed by "ballad" formula that worked for TEOM. But why not switch it up and do back to back up beats? I can't believe in a party record like E=MC2 he released "Bye Bye". After "Obsessed" a MTJF single with a few brand affiliations (since she name drops a lot of brands) shot in Italy would have been dope. I hope Mariah never releases anything anymore (105,751) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter Obsessed was a great first choice just like TMB was a great first choice for E=MC2, but similar to the latter the next single choices and the cheesy music videos ruined it. MOAIA was going to be an ambitious project with 2 remix projects (one with high profile collabs) and it had an Elle magazine tie in. But at the end of the day what sells an album is how it's introduced to the world and the singles play a huge role in it (in my opinion). So releasing HATEU, which is a great song, don't get me wrong, but not single worthy with that hideous video, was a mess. And then IWKWLI. There were other great options which had catchy choruses and more radio friendly that could have been better choices like MTJF, BGK etc. Also the HATEU remix would have done better than the OG. Don't get me wrong, it could be joint decisions between MC and LA and not solely LA's fault, but as the label executive he should have known better. Also the comments he made when she came to epic implying she has no original hits in her and should just sing covers, I felt was a big insult to someone who puts her songwriting over her singing. First of all he absolutely botched E=MC2 and MOAIA promo/roll out. Then when Mariah rejoined him in Epic he said she should do covers only and basically become a legacy artist. Telling a woman who considers songwriting her primary talent to just cover other people's song was probably a blow to Mariah. That's my 2 cents so no I don't think he is the right person now. After reading your post, I immediately thought of Sza and her ability to create these radio friendly songs that receive huge radio impressions despite Sza not having a great voice. Checkout Good Days, I Hate You, Shirt, Kill Bill and Snooze. If MC can create radio friendly songs with a nice beat without heaving belting and swooping runs, then she will do just fine with MC16. I am going to feel like a kid on Christmas day when I hit the play button on my new Mariah Carey album. At this point I don't care if I hear some vocal imperfections the new album. I was thinking like ya if they don't have a budget for a music video at least these smaller fun videos could have fed the engagements. Also just giving some context to why they did they song would be nice because a lot of people were confused why Mariah on a song like this and not something like "Positions", "POV" and TUN. So much potential especially in this era of social media where people lose focus and move on from things so fast they should have done more to highlight the song. When I saw the whole them changing profile photos together, having physical CDs ready and the short video of them together I was like wow they'll go all in. Take it with a grain of salt though since these accounts are right 50-50. They said Ariana and MC have a music video and big promo plans including live performance but we didn't get it. In both instances they were together and could have easily done a longer video or at least have a little chat talking about the collaboration and what it means to them. Ariana could have talked about how the collaboration came to be, why they decided on this song. Mariah could have talked about her love for remixes and why she decided to join Ariana on a song that casual listeners wouldn't associate with her usual music. They could have also done small videos of just them playing fun games to promote the video like "who knows who better" or pop culture quizzes (both of them are big pop culture experts). Then they could have released these videos every other day to keep engagement. It's honestly a shame. Mariah posted a small video yesterday promoting singing the chorus. But I'm shocked that Ariana's team dropped the song like it's hot. Like after the first day there was a single mention of the release not even a story. In Big Energy Remix, we can see Mariah and Latto in a short promo video wearing pink dresses. Why can't they took that opportunity to just film a video. Nowadays, visual is very important. Now the history repeat itself. Mariah and Ariana were both on set together for promo video of yes, and? wearing black dresses in some hotel but didn't shoot a video. Just a snippet of them hanging around, laughing, lipsynching to the audio of that song. Total waste. Now I haven't seen the visuals neither have I heard the album so I don't know much about it. I hear it's average but that's a really ambitious project. It didn't do great sales wise but like I said still ambitious. The way Mariah writes her songs sometimes you can envision them (like BGK, Babydoll, Crybaby etc) so I would really love a visual album from Mariah. Where she hires creative people to help her out with strong visuals. I wish she'd be willing to take that ambitious project on. Also I was hoping MC releases her album sooner that later, the more she'll delay the lesser attention it'll get. After Daydream Mariah would have been cemented in the Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand genre. Just like Michael Bubble will forever be in the Frank Sinatra genre. Mariah was lyrically doing art, and vocally doing art during her time with W.A, but I think even though it was amazing, it was commissioned art, not the art for the artist who wanted to express themselves. Forget #1 at this point, I was hoping for a good chart placement, but it looks like Ariana's team has abandoned ship, because they're releasing new remixes of the OG version and I haven't seen a single new post promoting the collaboration since Day 1. I feel like the excitement was definitely there when they announced, but a few things lead to it just being another missed opportunity. (1) Ariana's current reputation of a homewrecker and yes, and? being taken as a "I'm a home wrecker, yes, and?" (2) People not feeling Mariah belting. (3) There wasn't much promo after first day. (4) Mariah doesn't have much streaming pull and the song would have been dependent on Ariana's huge streaming pull, but Ariana is going through a slump. (5) People thinking this song isn't Mariah's type. (6) The song had already peaked and was free falling, so hopping on the remix didn't really make the "shock" impact of the MC-AG that their teams were hoping for. Makes me sad that it looks like all MC's new eras are staying relevant for like what on average 24 hours. I feel like a few live performances, little videos of why they collaborated or how they landed on this song to collab and all would have added to the hype, also of course a replayable MV. But I guess that's a wrap. I was reading somewhere that they messaged a radio station regarding why the station was playing the remix instead of the original, but the station said they weren't sent the remix. You're not a fashion expert, just as I am not a doctor. However, we form our opinions based on what we observe. It's not as though Mariah is going to discard her wardrobe at the suggestion of one, or opt for surgical procedures at the suggestion of another. Listening to the remix, it's apparent that there may be some significant issues with her voice. Whether we choose to gloss over it is a separate matter. Considering we're discussing Mariah Carey here, the legend, hearing her on a remix sounding like this is quite perplexing to me, that's all. It's perplexing how even studio production couldn't conceal or refine her delivery on the "Yes, And?" remix. Your point about the microphone possibly capturing the true state of her voice makes sense. Considering this is the best she could come up with even with studio manipulations, it leaves me curious about the raw quality of her vocals. At this stage, when even her whistle register is lacking its usual brilliance, I believe it might be prudent for her to consider undergoing vocal nodule removal. (Monday 19 February 2024; 01:43)
