I don't think I mentioned Barbra did I? Maybe I did lol. But my point is Mariah's was likely more cosmetic rather than medical, and there's plenty out there where people have said reshaping, even subtle, has impacted their singing voice. The original question was why does her voice sound different on Daydream, and Daydream was before the alcohol and marijuana era, and all she'd had done in 1995 was her first small breast augmentation and her first small rhinoplasty, so this is why I don't think you can rule those things out completely. But then yes, her voice got progressively worse until a small bounce back in the early 00s, then a massive, shocking decline after TEOM, and now she can't really sing at all without it being a Frankenstein of auto tune, reverb, digital pitching and splicing and pasting.

Haha. Am I? I don't think I am. Anyway, Google search quickly indicates lots of people who say a nose job impacted their singing, some for the better, some for the worse. Most report no effect. You're right it won't impact the vocal chord, but singing incorporates more than just that. It's the diaphragm, the lungs, the mouth, the nose, the chords etc.

Lol, you think When I Saw You isn't sung completely through her nose? It's the most brassy song on the album.

Yeh it's not the falsetto element I'm talking about. It's more the change in her tone from a somewhat thick, darker tone to one that was more nasal and thin. Listen to her sing America the Beautiful at the NBA finals. When she sings "fruited plain" and the final "shining sea", it's almost like her vocals are stacked/layered but they aren't. She just had an incredibly rich tone. It disappeared in 1995. It's nowhere on Daydream, and songs like When I Saw You and I Am Free really are noticeably nasal and different to anything prior. I love the theories Randy.

Rhinoplasty may or may not impact a voice, the fact is you won't know until after you have had it. Great that yours didn't impact you, but Mariah's clearly did as her voice has never returned to the strong, voluminous, agile voice she had on her first four albums. You can tell on Daydream almost immediately that her voice is thinner and like she's singing with a blocked nose. Yes, she sounded better post breakdown, when presumably she stopped drinking or engaging in other vices, but it never came anywhere close to where it was 1990-1994, and quickly went downhill after the success of TEOM.

She's been pumping a humidifier at her vocal chords since the late 90s. It doesn't work. And yes, of course rhinoplasty would impact your voice. The reshaping of the nasal cavity would massively impact the air passing through and your breath control. Why do you think her voice sounded full bodied on her first four albums, then nasally and thin from Daydream onwards?

Yes, I said this years ago and got crucified for suggesting such a thing, but the rhinoplasty plus her breast augmentation would have had an effect on her voice in terms of breath control and tone. Her voice lost its "body" in 1995 and the Daydream album was very nasally and brassy. Equally at this point her melisma became all disjointed too. Those elements (plus further rhinoplasty and breast augmentation later), and the overuse of alcohol and marijuana, have all contributed to the voice we have today. They were her choices and I'm sure she stands by them. As Mariah says, it is what it is.

Caterpillar (99,135)

All this talk of Mariah "reimagining" tracks from Butterfly is making me nervous. Hero's reworking in 2008 was abysmal, and her voice was in relatively good shape back then, although nothing by comparison to the 1993 vocals. To take one of her most iconic albums and tinker with, what many consider to be, her masterpiece is such a massive gamble that I worry if it is going to pay off. Close My Eyes on The Rarities was a car crash, and I imagine everything else will be if she's using her 2021 voice. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) did not sound good. At all. I'm sorry but a fact is a fact.
The Butterfly anniversary needs to be commemorated with the original album remastered in high resolution, the videos upscaled to 4K, the accompanying tour released as a DVD and audio, and any outtakes from the original sessions. Plus a new booklet with some previously unreleased photographs from the album shoot.
Otherwise, it's just another nail in the coffin for her legacy, by destroying an album that was so critically praised universally, regarded as her "magnum opus", and that contained her most delicate and vulnerable vocals ever recorded. It's a beautiful work of art. These intentions will be a massive step backwards and crap all over one of her best albums.

Precisely, Mariah's fans have nothing to do with AIWFCIY being a success, it's, simply put, just a brilliant song. If it was purely Mariah's fanbase that saw it reach #1 across the globe, Save the Day would have had the same success. But it didn't, because it was a horrific song.

Well put Jamie. She hit that balance when she married Nick. I've posted this before, but this is one of my most favourite Mariah interviews. She seemed in such a good place, was relatable, down to earth and friendly, funny, engaged, looked great and just seemed very self assured but also unassuming. Exactly where a singer of her accolades should be.

Funny, I was on my way to share this as well. All we had previously was a tiny snippet of MC and the backing singers on the stairwell from The First Vision video, so hearing this, with those gorgeous whistles and the agile and full-bodied 1990 vocals, is such a joy. CBPCH 2021 version is sung by a completely different person it seems, doesn't it?

In comparison though, the Grammy performance is incredible to this mess. We all criticised it at the time but "I'd give my all" to have her sounding like that again.

Yep. Everything on the original Merry Christmas album is untouchable. The re-recordings of AIWFCIY, the "live" version of O Holy Night, the hip hop Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town, the new CBPCH all pale by comparison. It's like that dreadful re-recording of Hero she did in support of The Ballads album. What was she thinking? Leave the past in the past and move forward.

I meant from a publicity/popularity standpoint. Daydream was Mariah's popularity and some would say, vocal peak. All I was saying was let her ride the crest of that wave because, as we all know, nothing lasts forever.

I streamed the album this morning and it's not terrible. In fact, I was quite surprised there were some songs with a bit of "oomf" to them, as usually it's all dreary rehashes of Someone Like You (Adele's We Belong Together). Her voice was a bit much towards the end though. The good thing about MC is her voice has so many facets her records are never uninteresting. No one can make an album with Petals and Bliss and Can't Take That Away and Heartbreaker. Just that one album has so many vocal styles and different vibes going on with it.

If Where Are You Christmas was put out with 1994 vocals the issue is, it would totally outshine Fall In Love at Christmas. Here's hoping for Rarities II in 2022 to include that, Lose Control from the debut and her demo tape.

Adele's in her Daydream era now. I'm like, let her have it. Mariah doesn't really need to have an aggressive campaign like Adele's album roll out in my view.
