Lipping (44,449) by Darryle from USA
I think that Money was lipped but only that song. WBT she may have sung over a backtrack but that's it I don't think she would go and re record it like that. It's one of her best live renditions of that song. As for Heavenly I just can't see Mariah ever lipping a gospel song. Her and Nick talk about how spiritual she is and God has blessed them and helped her get through such tough times. Her being so spiritual I just can't see her faking the emotion that would go into such an uplifting song like this.

Fake (44,448) by Darryle from USA
The Mariah we saw was not fake. The Mariah on NBC wasn't fake it was just one we aren't used to. It was a toned down Mariah. She used less things related to the diva and ditzy image. She only used dahlings like once. Mariah always tones it down for serious interviews. If she were Oprah or Barbra Walters was interviewing she would tone it down a bit. I can't believe some of you think Mariah acts like what we saw before on shows like MTV all the time. It's probably a bit more of both a combo of seriousness and playfulness.

One more try (44,447) by Maurice from USA
I have to say I really love this song and Mariah's version. I know some people would like more belting from her but I like how pretty it is. And the goodbyes she sings on the middle sometimes brings me to tears. I feel the emotion from her. This should also be released to adult radio. It's beautiful.

"Fakeness" (44,446) by Marissa from USA
That was a great clarification PJW. When it was said that she was being fake, I knew that fake wasn't the word but I vaguely understood what was being said. You hit the nail on the head when you said that she seems irritable and from my personal observations, tired. I most recently got this vibe from her ET Canada interview. I understand how someone could interpret it as fake because she's giving honest answers but at times there seems to be some emotional disconnect, which is the irritatability, exhaustion and "over-itness". (Yes I just invented a word, but I'm sure you know what I mean lol.) I don't know what's going on behind the scenes in her life, so I'm not going to condemn her for it but it is noticeable. But hey, at least she pulls through and does the interviews. I'd rather see her slightly irritable than not see her at all.

Will from England / Mariah calaborations / lip singing (44,445) by Paul from Usa
I really wish she'd shead the rappers, and bring some female singers on her her songs. Could you imagine Celine, Janet, Beyoncé, Shania, or someone younger like her younger fans that look up to her. I wish sometimes she'd bite the bullet and let go of all the drama and diva-ish behavior that goes on between her and other female vocalist. Like JLo. I wish on Divas Live she would have been more cooperative with the other genre singers (Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Faith Hill etc). Mariah was not lip singing on that special. Clean your ears out folks.

Mariah Carey at home special (44,444) by Paul from Usa
I thought she did wonderful. This is exactly what I want from her. Have a conversation with the person interviewing you. Nothing wrong with being a little silly, and having fun. His was she being "fake"? Btw. I love Mariah's extra weight. I think she looks so beautiful full figured.

Nikki (44,443) by enwar00 from usa
Thank you for your message regarding live vs. television. I feel very similarly regarding this topic. I remember seeing Mariah during the Music Box tour and then the next week watching the Thanksgiving special and wondering why she sounded weird. Even back then being young and all figured out it was dubbed. I've seen her on every tour since then and I've never been disappointed or questioned if she's singing. Honestly that's when I care more, because it ain't cheap. I also thought there was a difference between lip synching and singing with a track or background vocalists. Maybe I'm deaf.

Interview (44,442) by Anonymous from
That is as real as anyone will get. Or should get. Mariah sounded amazing. She didn't lip sync, she sung over the track.

Thank you for posting the show. I don't have TV and didn't see it plus couldn't find it on YouTube by searching in English. You're a lifesaver.

Mariah's "fakeness" (44,440) by Justin from USA - Los Angeles
Are you guys serious? I am so disappointed that you all agree she was being fake on NBC. She was definitely being herself. That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I'm disappointed you are acting non-lamb like. "Fake" are you serious?

Vocal fold gel (44,439) by Me. I am Carly from USA
Well I was just reading an article about Julie Andrews, remember she lost her voice with vocal surgery? In the "Mail online" article from 2011 they mention this "A new type of gel has been created by scientists to tackle damaged voice boxes, prompted by the singer Julie Andrews. The team behind the research say the gel, which is injected into the vocal cords, could revolutionise the treatment of voice complaints." I really hope Mariah might have some options like this in the future.

Thanks PJW for standing up for me through the barage of negative responses. You have the intelligence to interpret the true meaning of it. Sometimes people on this board are so blind and defensive but it is what is as MC would say.

I totally agree. There has been zero promotion here in Germany too. If I wouldn't have checked Amazon last week I would have not known that the album was released. That's sick and sad.

Most of us know the difference (44,435) by Joe from United Kingdom
Just wanted to put it out there that most of us already know the difference between dubbed and lip sync vocals. I have no problem with live vocals that are dubbed over to a certain degree or partly lip sync but when you lip sync all the climaxes to your songs, do 3 takes edit them together (badly) and then dub over what was atleast live it becomes beyond pointless. I'm going to stop here because I'm beginning to sound like I'm not a fan. I say this out of love and knowing what she is capable of and not to be negative. By the way I still catch the holy spirit from Mariah's impromptu performances so I know she can still sing. I just wish I could feel the same way about her actual some what live televised performances.

Certain (44,434) by Orkun from The Netherlands
My thoughts on the album is known by know and I won't repeat myself. And I really don't want to get in the way of the fans who honestly do like the album. What I am certain of is the following: I was 14 in 1990. I'm a songwriter and recording artist because of her. She is 100% one of the angels in my life. God knows how many times I listened to her to find comfort. And I did, more with her earlier recordings. After this album, Mariah will come clean and explain it all. And she will come back next time with a more solid album and re-write history. And the next album won't be late. A year maybe. And she will stop lip syncing. It's hard being Mariah. But real fans know her. She is a fighter. So are we. Mariah, remember who you are. Gimmicks really can go too far sometimes. Single choices may be wrong, but they are still written by you. You can do much much better. When the walls you mention are up, we notice and understand. But when they are up all the time, we get disconnected. The walls are a double edged knife. I do believe Mariah has to prove herself again. And she will with the next album. Because she truly is gifted. Just a little lost and that of course very human. I'm gonna say it: I love Walter A. I hate JD. I love Whitney. I hate Christina. I like Ariana, but she's so not Mariah. I used to like Nick, until he hurt my angels feelings with that stupid interview. Nick is not a funny comedian. Mariah on the other hand can crack jokes anytime. .

Re: tour / live vs. television (44,432) by nikki from usa
Her biggest tour to date is still Charmbracelet where she didn't have any radio hits and only went platinum. Mariah's Beautiful did better and sold more than TTR had and on an international level to boot. It's the best vehicle for her to sing the entirety of "her body of work". This would also be her first tour in 5 years, 7 years if we don't count the showcase that was Memoirs. There's more reasons to have one than not to. Reading what people deem "live"or "lipsync" and what they claim they can "tell" is completely absurd. Being a live performance is meaningless if its on tv. There are always producers, dubbs, and cut and paste. Each song that is sung live is done so 2-4 times for tv. People will keep pointing to the Daydream tour video as great live performances when they are all dubbed. Did she sing great? Yes, she did, but that didn't stop the footage from being tampered with. People like to point to her version of You And I as a great vocal moment. Sorry to inform you kitties, her vocals were rough that day and I still have the original copy. It was not one of her finest. Her rerun of that performance had some doctoring done. There is no live performance without tv tampering before viewing. No one is qualified to deem lip syncing or not unless you're viewing the live performance from a fan's iphone that was physically there. Especially, since so many can't tell the difference between a lead vs. background vocal.

PJW / Ian James (44,431) by Bill from the UK
It's a sorry state of affairs when Mariah may genuinely give a great live performance and her fans automatically assume it is lipped. WBT was clearly live, Fab completely ruined any illusion that Money was live, but I think Heavenly was. I think the reality is that it was recorded live, then dubbed or fixed up in the studio. And here's a wake up call for all the naysayers, (caps) that has always been the case (end caps). Not just Mariah, but every artist. Mariah's home videos on Sony (Unplugged, Here Is Mariah, MSG, Around the World) were all dubbed, no singer in the world can have an unerring sense of pitch when performing live. You watch those back and compare them to today's "real" live performances (ie caught on smartphones) and it's obvious. PJW, great post on Meteorite. Ian James, loved the Emotions video. Proof she still has it. Really half the time it comes down to alcohol. She must have been off the sauce then as she was pregnant. What a difference.

Stress stress stress and self care (44,430) by Me. I am Carly from USA
I bet it is quite stressful to have a husband talk silliness but also stressful to have half your lambs angry at your husband, no matter what is going on she must feel a need to distance herself from him publicly. The number one fear for Mariah was to have a child without a strong family unit, it must be hard to deal with his distance with work and travels, fear of the marriage not working. The celebrity world is ugly and the machine generally dislikes strong, over 40, shapely women. Most of us would never survive the abuse of the celebrity machine when Mariah started she fit the mold now she doesn't and they are so vicious. Sadly we sometimes must fall on the other side of the wall that protects M.C. For sanity.

Tour (44,429) by Rón from United Kingdom
In my opinion, with these reported poor sales and no one knowing about the album other than fans, I am really skeptical about the tour. It has been said since American Idol that a world tour is on the way but with such alleged limited success and no promo, I can see this tour being plugged especially outside of America. The album is so great but it won't survive and I really want to see her live. Anyone agree?

NBC performances (44,428) by Joe from United Kingdom
I have not seen the entire NBC special and seriously want to see the interviews. As for the performances I was going to post about the lip synching but didn't want to be negative but I have to be honest. As much as I love Mariah and don't try to bash her (check my previous post) I need her to take what she does vocally in her impromptu performances into her actual performances strip back the entire arrangement if you have to but its getting to a point where she even lip's her mid range belts now which I know in reality she can hit easily. I understand she has nothing to prove that's fine. Its just when I listen to her songs now I automatically know what notes she will be lip synching. Mariah can still sing, we all know that this is the only reason it's starting to bother me. I know she can do it if she tried. To those saying that people need to clean their ears out and that you can clearly hear the differences vocally compared to the studio track the differences your hearing are the fact that through out the performance it's switching back and forth between a live vocal and a studio or pre-recorded track. I don't think people complaining about the lip-syching are being negative, it's just being real.

June 2nd 1990 (44,427) by Nicole from US
From Billboard, June 2, 1990: Twenty-four years ago today, the Mariah Carey era began on Billboard charts. The then-20-year-old newcomer made her entrance with debut single "Vision of Love", which launched at No. 73 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 85 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. It would eventually lead both charts.

Home concert (44,426) by G.G. from USA
She had the performance at her home because it is a controlled environment. That way there wouldn't be any mess ups televised to the general public. Like when she got caught lip synching on the Today show. Notice that none of the "audience members" have talked about being there on Twitter or anywhere else. It was a very small audience as we could see. Paid actors perhaps? That might be why they haven't talked about the concert at her home.

Mary J. Blige (44,425) by Will from England
For the record, I like the two MOAIA duets. I really do. And I've only just realised that Mary is only the second female artist that Mariah has sung with on a record. The first being naturally, Whitney.

Give Will a break / Mariah's "fakeness" (44,424) by PJW from The U.K.
The definition of the word fake is not genuine. There were points in the interview where her smile was plastered on and her eyes slightly glazed over as she was mentally processing. There were other points where she was visibly and literally squirming in the chair. Her body language showed she was un-comfortable and irritable. At one point I thought she was actually going to stand up. But, being media trained and this being an interview for her benefit, she smiled on, answered the questions (nicely, I hasten to add - again, honesty, maturity and comfort are not synonymous) and did her job. She consciously fulfilled what was necessary whilst sub consciously demonstrating she wasn't comfortable. She does it all the time. She's a celebrity and we don't see her real persona in interviews like that. That means yes, she's not being genuine and/or fake but that doesn't necessarily have to be a negative thing. That's for your individual interpretation or misunderstanding of a word and it's connotation and shouldn't leave Will open to the tone of comments he receives or the reading of the Mariah riot act for being observant and telling the truth.

NBC special (44,423) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
I really liked the interview. I disagree with anyone that said she came off as fake. This is exactly the kind of interview Mariah needs, not the ones where she keeps talking about random stuff and not answering questions and cracking jokes about her boobs. She was down to earth and sweet which makes her look humble and more approachable. Don't get me wrong I do love Mariah's diva moments every now and then, but the GP probably take it negatively because they don't understand it's a joke. Anyways, and the person saying that Mariah has gotten lazy to do the concert at home. Please, this is what makes it seem so intimate and looks like she is singing to us directly from her home, like the private concert she did for the lucky winners of the contest. I enjoyed the interview and wished it would go on for a while. Mariah's eyes looked ready at some parts which made me really sad. I think all the performances except Money were live. The only thing I wanted was for her to sing a few more songs from the album especially ones she didn't perform yet like Faded and Dedicated or Cry or MILG instead of playing the YME clip and the YDKWTD clip.
