Dan / You're mine (43,465)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Dan, when an artist has been around for 25 years and has covered numerous styles during their career, and has a large fan base across different cultures and continents, nobody is going to like everything they do. There are several songs of hers I plain don't enjoy (Did I Do That, Boy, Makin It Last All Night), but that doesn't mean I'm not a fan of her music, it's just that those songs are not to my taste. A bunch of fans felt You're Mine was a rehash of a ten year old hit, and fans are entitled to an opinion. Personally I'm indifferent to the track, but I can see why others weren't won over by it. Doesn't in any way make them any less of a fan.

I agree. Most here don't like Mariah's voice, the way she looks, her personality, her songs. Lol. It is sad. Now wait for the barrage of "we are allowed to be critical" posts. Hahah.

I couldn't agree more with what you are saying. I have been saying it over and over again that this isn't Mariah's best era but people are taking it way to far (just read the discussions here, says it all). It's to a point that all you read is negativity. From the songs, the album cover how photoshopped it is, how fake she looks, how her boobs always have to be out, how she behaves in interviews, the way she dresses, her weight gain (it's about the voice not the curves) and the list goes on and on. She can wear whatever she likes, she can use every picture she wants as an album cover, talk the way she wants in interviews, drink as much as she wants and have the weight on her that she has because at the end of the day we don't own her. Don't waste your time on her or your money if it bothers you so much. I don't take everything so serious because it isn't. Mariah is going to be Mariah, the person that I have been looking up to since VOL and always will look up too. Before you judge look at yourself first. And no I don't agree with everything Mariah does, I just don't make a big deal out of everything she does, wears, says etc.

Tory / more on album images (43,459)
by PJW from The U.K.
| |
|

I really struggle myself with the aesthetics of the photoshopping used on the album covers but I was wondering if the direct contrast between the authenticity of the back cover and the plasticity of the front is intentional. Recently she's spoken a bit about the image both herself and Marilyn Monroe present(ed) laughing about it, saying it's just image and people can think what they want and going on to talk about them both being empowered, intelligent, women who know what they're doing. Then she gives us the album. On the front of the physical product she presents herself as Mariah Carey the pop star, the singer, the icon. There's a polished image that is part of the total package you get with celebrity nowadays and it serves her brand on one level, her smokescreen on another and in a lesser/greater part, her ego (pick and choose as you wish). On the back, behind the front and put with the actual substance of the album and herself - the tracks - is the childhood image, the true her, the purity. It's like her message with the artwork aswell as in interviews is "don't believe what you see on the cover/surface. It's all fake, a show. The real me still has purity and substance." It's an extension of the "looking in" message, something else she's used recently. Perhaps I'm reading into it too much, but perhaps not. like I said in other posts, she loves symbolism and I think she's very skilled at using it.

Drawing video (43,458)
by Darryle from USA
| |
|
|
I didn't get most of that video but I like what he said towards the end. He said something like when you look at this you see a woman who hasn't resolved what happened to her at 3 1/2 years old. I'm assuming by that he means she hasn't gotten over her mom and dad divorcing and stuff like that. I don't think Mariah's gotten past her issues with her dad yet but I don't think you can actually get over that type of thing.

Nikki's comments on the video (43,457)
by PJW from The U.K.
| |
|
|
Two points I'd like to comment on r.e. your views on the video are that of course Mariah has input into the colour scheme used in promo photos and we've much evidence for this. Aside from the common knowledge that Mariah is meticulous and somewhat pedantic about her image/presentation and wouldn't overlook or release control of something like that - and especially not as the drawing is such an important factor here - we have in-your-face examples of her use of colour to convey moods/ feelings/ emotion/ theme, i.e. Butterfly and Rainbow artwork or even better, "pink yet lavender". On her father and her marriage, I agree, reconciling with her father perhaps healed a lot but behavioural patterns, traits and psychology run deep, especially when related to childhood incidents or experiences, and can't be eliminated simply by reconciliation.

Japanese cover (43,456)
by Tory from Australia
| |
|
|
I think the Japanese cover looks weird as hell. It's like a morph of Daydream and Charmbracelet, it looks very photoshopped. I think the problem with the new album artwork is the heavy airbrushing. The color scheme and amber skies are beautiful but the heavy airbrushing on her legs just cheapens the effect. You look at the back of the album with the self-portrait and listen to her own description of the album as a "journey", then there's a big contrast with an almost artificial image on the front. Someone posted a video of an artist discussing the meaning behind her new artwork, and it makes a lot of sense. If that was Mariah's intention then I can accept the front cover. What's also interesting is the contrast between the front cover and the single cover of TAOLG from the same photoshoot. When TAOLG was released it seemed she was having a down moment, and the artwork reflected that. Now a couple of months on, the entire theme feels more brighter and vibrant. Either way I'm excited lol.

I Am. a Ram (43,455)
by nikki from usa
| |
|
|
Other than finding that video very dis-empowering and promo for patriarchal programming, it was an interesting POV. In astrology Mariah's an Aries. The sign of the Ram and the quote is "I am". It's a cardinal sign and these people are usually self employed or business owners. It's interesting MC has always had a 1 track mind and always knew "she is" a singer. No matter what anyone told her. It didn't matter that everyone tried to "control" her decision by convincing her she couldn't make it. Not her peers or her teachers. Mariah only participated in classes she was interested in and ignored the rest. Mottola tried to "control" her and that only lasted for so long. I don't think he took into account the fact MC doesn't control the color scheme of these photos. Or the fact she made her peace with her dad in '02. If she hadn't I doubt her marriage to Nick would be as great as it is if those issues weren't resolved. It's a good thing she never gave up her "I Am". If babies come from heaven, then some part of the toddler recalls what it's like to be a part of the whole. If we are all one, then there is no one lesser. Had she not kept that with her through all her struggles than she wouldn't be the icon she is today. "In the dark, we are all equal" - Mariah Carey.

The ridiculous psychoanalysis video (43,454)
by Taylor from USA
| |
|
|
I just want to state there is no evidence for any of the ridiculous claims made in that video. Anyone who claims to know things they cannot possibly know should be subject to extreme scrutiny, as they are of often delusional, or manipulators of fact. That person does not know Mariah and cannot not possibly know the things he claims to know just by looking at a childhood self portrait and current album cover. It's rather absurd to view his statements as anything more than speculation. Why someone would post it is beyond me.

Mariah's weight (43,451)
by Alex from England
| |
|
|
Mariah has been known to be quite secretive about the serious things going on in her life even if she may be dropping hints here and there. Like when she was exhausted from 1999 and ended up working herself into the groud. Like when she kind of stopped the promotion for E=MC2 and gained some weight when she was actualy going through a miscarriage. Like when she really gained some weight end of 2009 because of the injections to help her get pregnant. If Mariah has put on this much weight in just a few months it is probably because something is happening. One year ago she looked amazing for a the 43 year old woman, had gradually shed some weight over the course of the AI "moment" and I do believe her recent weight gain is because of injections she may have because of her injury last summer. If not, probably something else. I find it disgusting to read that people attack her for her weight like she owes it to you to be looking skinny at all times. I, for one, doesn't care that much about it as long as she is healthy and knowing how insecure she is, she probably is the first one to be annoyed with it. So act like adults and just respect her as a human being if that's not too much to ask. It is one thing to talk about her weight, it is another when you criticize it like she's disappointed you. Would you do the same with a member of your family or a close friend? I hope not.

Re: Rainbow era (43,450)

Yep, she looked so fresh and like a normal, sexy girl. I fell in love with her at that era. Her face and smile was sexy and sweet at the same time. I miss that expression. Her cheeks. I love her voice tone in that album too and you can see her so happy with Luis Miguel, her boyfriend at that time. I l think that she still can't forget him and all the songs talking about some lover of the past is about him. They made a good couple but so bad he's a latin playboy hehe whatever. The Rainbow era was a cool era. Colourful as its name.

I personally think is gorgeous and probably the most natural picture of her I've seen in some time, and sticks to the theme of all her albums, a close up portrait shot. I love it. To the person who said Mariah was bloated on Letterman, you're wrong. [censored] I really think something in her personal life is off track. I don't mind the extra weight, but with that comes an array of health issues.

Me. I am Mariah analysis / Monarch control / illuminati (43,447)
by PJW from The U.K.

|
Thanks for the video Gilbert. Agreed, it's very interesting. I've thought for a long while that it's evident she's a lot of issues around the absence and disconnect of her father, her image and overt sexuality being one of the symptoms. I think I've mentioned it in the past, but her psychology is incredibly interesting and, I find, quite sad. I feel for her. I'd be very interested to read the posts about the monarch control too. I've been aware of the hints she's dropped and subliminal messages in her work r.e. the "illuminati" over the years but not a lot of people talk about it in regards to Mariah and the trauma it's obviously caused her (as opposed to how much it's debated about other artists). She presents it quite clearly in some videos/live performances but I bet there's a lot people haven't picked up on.

You are most welcome. I'm glad the webmaster was able to post it for me. Hopefully he places some input as well. He made really good points and had his facts together and what's interesting I was watching a Mariah Carey pool side interview back in 1997 and she states when my parents divorced I was 3 and a half and shortly after I came across the video.

Her catalogue has aged very very well. Her first album is still very enticing, and I couldn't say the same about the first Madonna record. I don't even mention Dangerously In Love by Beyonce. Let's take some moments to celebrate Mariah lyrics and sublime classics like Breakdown, Underneath The Stars, Vision Of Love, Emotions, Butterfly, Slipping Away, My Saving Grace, Open Arms, Fourth Of July, Music Box, Anytime You Need A Friend, Bliss. Bye.

Mariah's image (43,443)
by Jeremey Carey from United States
| |
|
|
I honestly loved almost everything Mariah wore during American Idol. She looked flawless during the live shows. I honestly don't care when she shows cleavage, but there should be a limit. The Bet Honors was a bit much, but she was going for the Jessica Rabbit look. I love to show Mariah off for looking ageless. Last year whenever I asked my friends they always thought she was in her mid 30s. But now since her face looks bloated, she's starting to look her age to me. We are concerned fans, but we also need to be respectful to one another and Mariah with our opinions. I love her no matter what. I just hope with whatever decision she makes, it's a healthy one.

There is a member on here, I don't remember his name, but he mentioned Monarch Control and the drawing of Mariah. I wanted to post this here because I really felt that this was interesting to hear his interpretation of Mariah's drawing. It wasn't negative in anyway but very very interesting to hear him explain the drawing. Don't be afraid to check, just to have an open mind. I'm curious to see what others think of this video. Again, I found it very interesting.
