Celine (39,229)

I see nothing wrong with discussing other artists briefly. Maybe folks could put an OT (off-topic) in their title? I mean, it's not like Mariah is giving us any news. Unless perhaps we can discuss her new nail polish collection. Thrilling.

Celine / favourite performance (39,228)
by Musti from UK
| |
|

I don't see why a Celine single cannot be discussed on here. She may not be as good and unique as Mariah, but she is still one of the top 3 best singers to emerge since the days of opera and jazz. Plus their careers ran alongside each other. Celine and Mariah are friends indeed and in fact Celine mentioned only last year that she would like to do a song with Mariah. I truly hope that happens someday! I don't have a single favourite live performance. You simply can't. But I always go back to Fly Like A Bird at the Grammys. Standing O!

Mariah take note? (39,224)

Carlos, boy you're wild, even though I was kinda thinking the same thing. If MC took a page out of Celine's book, she wouldn't be involved in the songwriting process and just sing hand picked songs from the record label. No thanks. I love Celine and Whitney, but c'mon, lambily lets not.

New label... now we're talking (39,222)
by Carol from Spain
| |
|
|
It was obvious for all that something was going on, besides her injury. Now we have no doubts. I believe the album will be out sonner than expected, now that she got IDJ out of the way. IDJ can thank Mariah for her record of 14 weeks on top of the Bilbbboard and for giving them their most successful album on the label so far - none of their other acts that sell more these days ever done it. I hope now lambs start believing a bit more and give this album a chance because I'm sick and tired of so much crap hearing fans say she's floping. Where's your faith?

I'm confused now. Is this a Mariah Carey fansite or a "I like Celine's new single" website? If you like Celine's new song, then go to her page and post it there. It's enough.

I love Celine's new song too, Will and Stacey. Wow Lee from the USA, is it really necessary to say things like that about Celine? She is always complimentary towards Mariah and they happen to be friends. They are both incredible singers and artists. Celine does the Vegas shows so she has more time for her kids and so her kids can be settled in one city. They are both legends and have both earned respect over the last 20 years.

Favourite performance (39,219)

I would have to say "I wanna know what love is" live in 2009, X-Factor UK. So hard to choose. "Without you" during the Thanksgiving special of 1993 is also breathtaking.

Ok, next for a [...] poll. I have just wached the 2000 Divas performance of Heartbreaker/Love Hangover. I think that is one of her prime examples of performances. What is [...] favourite perfomance?

I agree. I just heard Celine's new song and I have to say I really like it. The bridge is a bit messy to me, but maybe will grow on me with time. I especially loved the note before the end note on the line "loved me back to life". I don't know if I make any sense. The chord just strikes me as perfect. Anyway, MC needs to look back at Daydream, Butterfly, Rainbow, TEOM, and E=MC to figure out a formula that works. Why were those albums successful? Know what I mean? Anyway, if I have to wait for MC, Celine is a nice way to go.

Billy, Dreamlover (39,216)
by Lee from UK
| |
|
|
I haven't heard this version of Dreamlover before but looking at the comments on YouTube, this was meant to be the original version and the version we have on the album is actually the remixed pop version. I enjoyed this version because you got to hear a few vocal runs that are covered up on the album, but I think I prefer the album version (probably because it's the version I grew up with).

I'm tired (39,213)
by Lee from USA
| |
|
|
This whining about what Mimi's haters think about her is getting old, guys. Everybody knows that there's a vendetta against Mimi among industry people. Mariah gets criticized for shit that Kanye and Lady Gaga would have been celebrated. Are people that desperate to bash Mimi that they are invoking Celine Dion? If Mimi took note from Celine, then she would be as irrelevant as Celine is now. I like the fact that Mimi is challenging these kids instead of running to Vegas in order to be an overpaid lounge singer.

Ariana Grande / Celine (39,212)
by Will from Australia
| |
|
|
I just listened to her new album. It's alright, no where in the league of Mariah in terms of lyrics or vocals. To be honest, she should be compared to Jessica Simpson if anything, sounds more similar to her IMO. Almost Is Never Enough was the highlight track for me. I don't hate on her like some others, I welcome new female artists and she is talented. On the other hand, I also checked out Celine Dions new single Loved Me Back To Life and I have to say I'm very impressed that she hasn't had an album in 6 years and yet stays true to herself without trying massively to compete with the kids. Take note Mimi!

I agree that the lambs need to let Ariana be. I'm not into her, but she does have talent and she deserves to have her moment. I'm just wondering how Mariah may be threatened by other vocalists when she has worked with a lot of great female vocalists throughout her career. Do you mean the younger artists of today?

Ariana Grande (39,210)
by Lyric from USA

Ariana's new album is cute. Her album has a throwback feel to 90s R&B and she does a great job with that style. I understand why some Mariah fans would give her a hard time, but there will always be new musicians trying to replicate legends. Eventually after all the failed singers dubbed "the new Mariah", one was bound to be successful. I think Mariah is threatened by female vocalists and it'd be nice if she reached out to a few of them more often. Many female singers, including Ariana, adore Mariah and don't deserve such hostility from her lambs. One can only be on top for so long before someone younger comes along.

Billy, I have heard this one before. I think it was on a Dreamlover maxi single. Not sure what country it was released in and I'm also not sure if this is the original of Dreamlover. I do enjoy this mix though.

Concerns (39,205)
by SC from USA
| |
|
|
Hi guys. I'm very concerned with the upcoming era. We are still waiting for some sort of news from MC on the upcoming album. No dates, no updates, nothing. I'm shocked that in September the only news from her is about a nail polish. So sad. What's going on? I saw an article on Billboard's website today on the fall's hottest albums. Of course, no news on MC. Everyone who's anyone seems to have things under control, but what's going on with her team? I honestly don't get her sometimes. Is she concerned with her fans not knowing anything about it? At this point #Beautiful is old news. Whatever happened to the remix video after all that trouble? She broke her arm for this video, so it was probably obsolete and badly done, so it's probably going to end up in the "enhanced" version of her album. All of that work for nothing. Please MC, focus on the upcoming marketing campaign for the album. What happened to that cool dance track that she played for us during her voicemail? Please reinvent yourself and come up with a new sound and a killer video thats not overly done and styled. We need some raw music and image. Please give this to us. We requested an acoustic version of #Beautiful and it didn't happen. We only received badly done remixes with hip hop. This is now what the general public wants at this point. We want raw, Adele-like music. This is what made you a star back in the day. I'm sad and frustrated at this point.

Mariah's reputation (39,204)
by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway

I can agree [...] degree that Mariah's bad reputation dates back to the Mottola days. Back then [...] saw Mariah as just as a [...], having nothing to say regarding the path of her career. But that is a long time ago, I don't think [...] even know she was married to him anymore, especially the younger crowd. She could have made a brand [...] image after Mottola, and I like how she was during the Butterfly era, but when Rainbow came out, she was a [...], and the video for Loverboy took it to another [...]. I remember I made my friends watch the Loverboy video, and they couldn't really believe their eyes. I don't think she ever will gain respect from the [...] unless she presents her self as a bit more mature, or a lot more mature. It's ok to be a [...] when you are in [...] 20's, but in [...] 40's? Now, it's time to act like an adult. But after seeing her outfit at the Summer Jam 97, I think she has a long way to go. In my opinion, I think she normally acts mature in her personal life, I think this [...] act is just for the [...], and if I'm right, I don't understand why she wants to be percieved that way. I have listened to Ariana Grande, and I don't like it that much, maybe because I'm a bit tired of RnB. And I think Mariah has a way more powerfull voice than Grande, but I can understand the comparison some bit.

The reason Mariah isn't respected in the industry or by the general populace is because of Tommy Mottola for 3 main causes. Cause 1: MC's contribution to her own success has been downplayed since day 1. Brenda K. Starr is never mentioned in the original tale nor the bidding war Tommy got in with Warner Bros. over obtaining her. Unless you're a lamb, the general public to this day is unaware she's a songwriter/producer. The cinderella story was promoted to the extreme - Tommy "discovered" her and changed her life - she just got lucky. Cause 2: "We don't see her as a pop-dance artist, we see her as a franchise." Sony nearly went bankrupt not having steady hits. The real reason she didn't tour was because Sony wanted her spinning out hits. This only made people suspicious about her true vocal ability. To this day MC is more scrutinized for her vocals than any other artist. Cause 3: She married the boss. The outside world saw her marry Tommy has major success with Music Box, esp. internationally. Merry Christmas was huge and Daydream legendary. People and industry alike view Mariah as a kept woman who slept her way to the top. Not a woman who spent every waking hour working her ass off. Presenting her this way was important for Tommy, she's a jewel who can churn out hits, a hot commodity. He'd need her to be insecure and doubt herself so she doesn't realize her options. He'd need the world to view her as "his created product" to keep others from sniffing around his goods.

The people's champ: MC vs the industry (39,202)
by RadChad from United States
| |
|
|
If Mariah's fans multiple purchases of TGIFY made her number one, than where the hell are they now? For real though, I've always credited TGIFY making it to the top due to the remix with Joe and Nas. Everybody was jamming that version, even non lambs, so I can't completely agree with this theory, it's my belief that it takes a little more than the core fans buying multiple copies to make it to number one. But I'm sure fans of other artist buy multiple copies of their material as well, so it probably all fairs out in the long run. I also agree with the post about the politics behind airplay, promotion, and just in general. It's obvious that the industry has something against Mariah, but like the Phoenix she always rises, and proves she doesn't need their favor because she has us and the favor of the general public (IMO). She may not have a gazillion Grammys like Beyonce or others, but they don't have her albums sales. This is why Mariah is the people's champ. Though the lyrics to the original version of TGIFY may be lost on the general public, could we say the same for Hero, Always Be My Baby, One Sweet Day or We Belong Together? You know the answer.

Clip of possible new song (39,201)
by 123 from USA
| |
|
|
Did anyone else catch a new song Mariah was singing on the Barbara Walters special. It wasn't Bring It On Home. It's just a short clip of her in the studio. It plays during the 2:10-2:17 mark of the interview. From the short clip, its sounds like a great song. Mature, jazzy influenced, sung in full voice. If she has more material like that on the album, its really going to be a winner. If it happens to be true that she will be re-making Lullaby Of Birdland, which is an old jazz standard sung by greats like Sarah V, Ella F, and even most recently Amy W, it sounds like she is taking a mature, jazz influenced approach that she injected into her Merry Christmas II You album. If this is the case, I believe we will have a winner on our hands. I attached the link to the interview to see if anyone hears what I heard.

New album / Ariana Grande's "Yours Truly" (39,200)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
After being frustrated without news about any music from Mariah, I decided to give a listen to Ariana Grande's album "Yours Truly", and I have to say there are some good songs in it. She has a retro song called "Tattooed Heart" which would be the equivalent of Mariah's "Forever" that I think it is beautiful and very well sung. I'll be listening to her music in the meantime untill Mariah put some music out. She's not as powerful vocally as Mariah was during the 90's, but she sings beautifully and reminds me of Mariah back then. Compared to all the garbage music out there, she's a breath of fresh air. I like the fact that she's not hitting whistle notes in her album. I think those belong to our beloved Mariah. She's trying to find her own voice.
