About Matty from Vancouver Canada:
I love music of all kinds, with R&B and pop toping my list of favourite genres. I've been a Mariah fan since Charmbraclet, there was something about that album that connects on a deep level. Other favourite albums are Glitter, Daydream, The Emancipation of Mimi, and Me. I Am Mariah.
My Favourite Mariah Songs are: The Art of Letting Go, Fantasy & Shake It Off.
My Least Favourite album is Music Box.
My most start-to-finish listened album (don't-skip-a-track albums): Emotions, Butterfly, The Emancipation of Mimi and Me. I Am Mariah: The Elusive Chanteuse.

Tacking on two Memoirs songs to MIAMTEC (105,198)

I agree. I think she should have added Triumphant (Vintage remix, with the full rain intro - that should have been the actual single imo), plus the ASAP Rocky Beautiful remix, and call it a day. I absolutely don't understand the America the Beautiful inclusion or a rehash of six year old material. My only guess is that Mary J's label and the sex predictor's labels had a contractual obligation that the songs must be included on an official release, which didn't happen with Angels Advocate, as intended. Also the album art should have been the original Art of Letting Go art (either the one where it's her looking over in the bottom right corner or the actual AOLG single artwork). The standard version that's a Emancipation/E=MC2 redo wasn't the right serve, it was redundant.

Those would 100% be better choices than the random picks from years ago. "Triumphant" to this day remains a good song for me. It was just not the right choice for a lead single (which let's be real it was gonna be a lead but the failure to chart led it to being labelled a buzz single) at that time because people were hungry for new Mariah music and her being basically the chorus girl on the song didn't translate well to the listeners. But I love the video and the song.

Robert-Anthony, this is so random. I'm in ATL for work this week and staying on Peachtree St. Hahahaha Vancouver to Atlanta couldn't be farther apart, yet here I sit in my hotel room on Peachtree St. on my first night here. I haven't been to ATL in almost four years. What a random coincidence.

Could be Epic ... queen of reimagining (105,166)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
What if Mariah, queen of reimagining music, released an album that is 10 tracks long - all the exact same lyrics, but reimagined as a Jazz album, Dance/disco album, Indi Rock album (ah la Ugly Daughter) and gospel album. Literally the same lyrics on all four (and it would be sold as one album, not four separate ones), but completely reimagined to suite all four genres. I could see her getting her due flowers for doing something like that. Especially given her influence on the "remix" culture she's helped build for years.

Who is Caution about? (105,165)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
Ohhh interesting about 8th Grade being about Ben. I have always heard 8th Grade as a song about a predator (however you want to interpret that). It sounds like one of MC's most personal songs to me. it's interesting that 8th Grade and her eternally 12 mantra have a correlation time wise. Her memoir gives a lot to be desired about what really happed to Miss M. at that time in her life. I think more happened than she really shares imo.

I think Giving Me Life is about Derek Jeter or Mark Sudak. Both men gave her a happy relationship for a moment in time. Although, Mark Sudak was too behind the scenes probably for MC to married. Did she ever take him to Aspen? 8th Grade is about Ben Marguiles. The Distance is most definitely about Tanaka. Great topic, Matty.

If you think (105,132)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
If you think trans issues are equated to castration. Get educated. Castration has nothing to do with trans issues and if you think that somehow effects your "masculinity", say like putting on "colleague" vs. "perfume"; you need a long, deep view in the mirror (which will be hard and sad for you). Penises vs. vulva don't define a soul. If you choose to believe it does... ok. It's a discussion about social norms. It's not about genitals. Let's get back to Mariah.

Political (105,130)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
Are we able to discuss Mariah without these deep dug political beliefs? Mariah has fans that are queer, trans, "straight" (whatever that means, I'm speaking to you cucks), lesbian, bi, straight edge, Jewish, Christian, Muslim, voodoo etc. What are you the few of you going off on? If you don't understand the trans experience, then don't engage if it pains you. Sexuality is a spectrum, not a binary category. If you don't understand, the least you can do is not demean someone else. Mariah has supporters of every single demographic in the world. The world needs relaxation, not a demand of direction.

Who do we think Caution is about? GTFO - Stella (it's not about a man, it's about an insincere grifter) With You - Tanaka A No No - Stella again "Snake in the grass". 8th Grade - The first time Mariah was abused and violated. The Distance - The anthem of what we are told all fairy tails wish for, it's the hope. Thoughts?

Starboy (105,071)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
I'm confused what people are asking, do you want Mariah to have another [hit] that resonates with young listeners, or try and reignite the fire that was the holy trinity of the '90's (Mariah, Whitney, Celine)? I want Mariah to have a smash dance hit that breaks her mold. We talk about how [Charmbracelet] walked, so TEOM could sprint. I have the same feeling about Caution. it was a precursor to what we will experience next.
On a different note, who said "no one expected Mariah to speak like that" in regard to GTFO? GTFO, and the [remix] she's on for Unforgettable ("Sip on this drink 'till I'm [censored] up"), even "Clown" from [Charmbracelet] ("I should've never given you my [censored] two way") she sings the "f-word". Mariah's success is based on her versatility. Christmas to f-bombs. I personally love it.

E=MC2 + Glitter + Gospel (105,055)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
My dream for the new album is a party atmosphere; like E=MC2 mixed with Glitter, and add in some choir gospel at the end. I love the arrangement of the Glitter vinyl opposed to the standard track order. I wish MC would always group the bangers, and then the ballads and gospel. The banger followed by a slow jam has always irked me. If you’re having a house party, you want all the bangers together so you don’t have to skip a track.

Kardashian vs. Stella (104,993)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |

I'm sorry, if you think the Kardashian are in the same sphere or level as Stella, you're taking too many hallucinations. It's Vogue (Kardashians) vs. National Enquirer (Stella). It's that simple, despite how you saw the Kardashians 10 years ago with their original faces and bodies. Time and opinions have marched on past from how they began. I'm not understanding how people can compare.

Merry Christmas has gone from 5x Platinum to 9x Platinum in just four years. It has sold about 300K this Christmas season so far. Caution is not even close to reach gold status and Mariah Carey is stuck at 9x Platinum since the late 90's. I would say Merry Christmas is loved by most.

Do you think Merry Christmas is Mariah's most globally adored album, because of its clarity? I personally like MCII more than MCI, however I have been listening to MCI recently on vinyl, and I feel like the production on MCI allows Mariah's voice to be clear and admired and takes a beat to breath.
What other Mariah albums are as vocally forward as Merry Christmas? I would suggest Emotions, Emancipation, Caution. Those are the most vocally clear albums in my opinion. Thoughts?

Obsessed in the UK (104,579)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |

I think Mariah caving to the auto tune trend and also a vocalist singing "sexing me" was a bit hard for the radio audience to digest. The Jump Smokers remix is the best version, the OG isn't a fast song or a slow song, it's a challenge to know where it fits. However, The music video and response to Eminem's harassment is legendary.

Andrew, thank you for the response. When you approach your opinion with kindness and thoughtfulness rather than mud slinging, your perspective is appreciated and understandable. I get what you're saying. I've had friends tell me they love her voice and music, but grapple with her persona. I love her persona and humour, but do get why she's a hard pill to swallow at times for some. I can't stand Madonna because of her persona, so I get it.

Mariah Carey in the UK (104,559)
by Andrew from the UK
| |
|
|
Having taken off with I'll Be There, not until the Memoirs era did Mariah drop from being a pretty steady Top 10 artist. There were certainly some blips along the way, most notably releasing Butterfly as a single but Mariah for many many years was a mainstream radio listed artist. However, I'd agree that she became the source of much derision after she took her clothes off in 1997. Nobody wanted it from her. This emerging vanity aspect of her personality was quite off-putting to British people. The Heartbreaker Remix and Loverboy videos did maximum damage to her profile as did the expanding breasts which started ignoring each other sometime around 1998 into 1999.
It does all strike me as possibly a little bit unfair. Women - and girls, even - were treated very differently back then, such were the times that they would often be asked about their breasts in interviews. There is a video on YouTube of it happening to Britney when she was about 17 years old and it is uncomfortable viewing.
But with Mariah I believe she was very respected as a top-tier vocalist and she was, at the very essence of her being, a solid-bet of a hitmaker - the "Songbird Supreme", no less. That she had achieved this through sheer talent won her many fans who became confused at her need to add sex and sexuality to her career. It smacked of desperation and she was somewhat "slut-shamed".
I cannot help but often wonder what Mariah's career would be like if it was taking off in this day and age. Almost certainly she would not have endured the ridicule for having a mental health crisis but, rather, I would hope she would be, or have been, treated a lot more sympathetically.
Regardless of whataboutery, the success of her singles and her popularity whenever she visited the UK cannot be diminished and it serves to emphasise that if she has the right material and promotion she will be successful. Unfortunately, in terms of both, she has had neither for well over a decade now. The Sweet Sweet Fantasy tour needs to hit the road again.
N.b. Sorry for the essay, J-L, but I do suffer from insomnia. I gotta get me some sleep. Also, check out the chart-placing of "Obsessed", I don't recall it underperforming like that.

You are a laughable misleader of gargantuan proportion. I don't object to you believing whatever it is you need to believe to maintain a level of comfort in your mind - it is your life and if you are so fragile then do whatever is you need to do to live your best. But rational people will and must object when you and your ilk try to paint the false narrative true in other people's minds in order for your own suspension of disbelief to be maintained.
That you give that performance a 6, also, smacks of disingenuousness. Either that, or you're just lost irredeemably inside delusion and/or galactically stupid and/or have absolutely no knowledge of the details of Mariah Carey's live performance history.

Thank you Jamie. That was such a thoughtful and understandable response. That's how I've seen and understood it tbh. Much of the UK don't understand or relate to her post Butterfly. I personally didn't relate to Mariah until Charmbraclet (I was in grade 11 at the time). I remember Mariah being the hottest artist in my grade 9 year (from a Canadian perspective), which was Heartbreaker era. Before that she was "Mom's music". Then when I went to uni, everyone was obsessed with TEOM album, and then during the E=MC2 era every queer club in the country was blasting Mimi. After those impressionable life moments, me and my friends have been buckled in for the ride.

The UK loved early Mariah, they just didn't like the whole transition from vocalist to diva. Obviously I'm not speaking for myself as I've continued to follow Mariah. I want to ask an honest question. What does the UK Lambs need or want Mariah to do? I lived in the UK for four years. Mostly on the Welsh border by bishops, as well as London proper (your train system is the best in the world as of my experiences tbh). Why are you UK guys so hard on her? And if I hear "1993-1996, please, I maintain Mariah's most artistic, expression and performances were post 2002 , consistently". What I see Mariah from 1988-1996 is her doing a job. From 1997-present, I see an artist. If her voice broke? Who cares? It's park of her human journey, that makes her so relatable.

I'd give it a 6; she looked happy, healthy and nervous. But most of all she looked like she was having a blast. Why is anyone expecting her to be a lightning bolt or prancing around the stage? That's not her gig, never has been. The most dancing she's done was in the Glitter club scene. So demanding that Mariah needs to boot it around stage, just like "fetch", it's never gonna happen, so enjoy how amazing she is in all her other talents. Of which Mariah has many.

I would 1000% agree with all saying that Emotions is the superior album, far and away. The debut sounds so dated in 2023, where as Emotions has a pure timelessness to it, plus one of Mariah's more unique album art (meaning not just a close up of her face, or in a power stance).

I'll just say this, between those two records, one is on the cusp of being certified Diamond - her third if I might add, while the other still has a long way to go (the numbers never lie). There's a reason why "Vision of Love" and "Love Takes Time" were the songs chosen for the tribute - they are instantly recognizable classics (even in that time), that have stood the test of time, the kind of songs seasoned songwriters would kill to have to their credit, written by a then 19 year old a testament in itself and can only be found on the most stellar debut ever by an artist - Mariah Carey.
