She definitely looked beautiful. Call me Negative Nancy but the interview was all fluff. If [you] didn't see the interview, you didn't really miss anything because nothing of substance was talked about. Very little talk about her upcoming shows, no new project news but plenty of talk about prank calls and lighting (insert eye roll).

Sweet Sweet Fantasy Tour (103,859)
by Brandon from USA
| |
|
|
From all the clips I saw, she seemed in really good voice for most of the tour. I really enjoyed the improvisational moments and seemed to go for it vocally and was very confident in her voice. I also liked how she interacted with the dancers more and had small choreographed moments with them (Fantasy remix, Obsessed, IKWYW) as opposed to them just being background props. She also stayed in shape the entire tour and I loved her ensembles (even the leotards). Her confidence was on 10 and she seemed to like what she was doing. She seemed to be stepping outside of her comfort zone with this tour. I wish she had continued with that style of performance and not slip back into her old ways.

Often imitated, never duplicated.
It was as professional as a tour from her I had seen. And it visually quite great. Plus, the variety of songs from the discography of course better because it was late in the day.
I remember Martyn asking my opinion at the time and I could only say that I didn't really care about the lipsync or the awkward transition because it was just like a big Mariah Carey nightclub. And Martyn liked it. Although he was a lad of very, er, questionable taste.
What did you like about it?

What is wrong with Mariah? (103,734)
by Brandon from USA
| |
|

Just because you are tired doesn't mean [you] give a lazy performance to people who have paid money to see [you]. It's not as if she was in the midst of a long tour and made a special effort to perform at this wedding. Her last performance was months ago. Beyoncé just came off of a 50+ date tour in stadiums with an almost 3 hour high energy show and gave it every night. I'm sure there were nights when she didn't feel like it but still gave her all. We shouldn't blame jet lag because she should have gotten there early enough to get some rest and be prepared, knowing how long it takes to get over there. I'm confused as to why some fans lower to bar to the ground for Mariah when she is capable of so much more. She's only 54 and still young and beautiful in my eyes. She's not some frail old woman. She just doesn't try much anymore which is frustrating.
I hope she's able to muster up some energy and vocal stamina to get through this Christmas tour.

I don't think something was wrong maybe she was tired and the concert was private maybe it was quick little gig like how a few of todays artist perform at colleges they do their one two and leave treating it like a gig and besides she's proven herself by just standing around and giving effortlessly vocals for many years she don't have to anymore in my heart but I'm so excited to see what she has planned in the next few days and I can't wait. What is wrong with Mariah? (103,729)
by Brandon from USA
| |
|

Something is definitely wrong here. I have been saying the same thing. Although she looked beautiful in the MB30 videos, I'm like why can't she just move and act naturally. It's very irritating sometimes. Then when she performs in Qatar, she's almost lifeless on stage, standing almost completely still and not performing at the level of a superstar who's been on stage for 30+ years. Let's not even talk about how much of the show she was lip syncing. I'm not sure what is going on behind the scenes but something definitely isn't quite right.

What is wrong with Mariah? (103,725)
by Andrew from the UK
| |
|

Mariah is completely incapable these days of remaining still in a shot: she does about 20 different facial expressions that are not natural (that is, not reacting normally to the external input), she hunches her shoulders, clenches her fists, she gives up after a while then throws her arms in front of her face whilst diving out of shot, she seems incapable of breathing at normal places during a sentence, and she stresses love vowels which is irratating ("you said do the hiiiigh nooooote").
It's weird. No, it's super weird. No, its super-[censored] weird. What on Earth is going on in her head? Can't she just be natural, for once?
And she should stop with the All I Want For Christmas Is You nonsense until after Thanksgiving. It is not as if it is not possible for people to get sick of the song - and (whilst I may only be able to speak for British, and perhaps Western, people) it will turn good-will on its head if people thing she is using Christmas for self-promotion to fill a bank account. Good will is so easy to lose.

Qatar wedding performance (103,688)
by Brandon from USA
| |

I saw the same videos and from what I saw, her Mike was mostly off. The backing track was very prevalent and is making its appearance more and more in her shows these days. Expecting a live show from a "singer" is asking too much? Expecting a singer to sound good is asking too much? No one expects her to sound like 90's Mariah but we do expect her to sound good.

Most of what I've seen her mic was on but likely singing over herself. I think she sounds great. My All sounded the best it's sounded in recent years. I'm excited.
I feel the lambs have an unrealistic expectation. I noticed this during LA Pride, for example, where I (and many others) felt she sounded amazing, yet lots of hate from the lambily.

She's checking her list - she's checking it twice? (103,682)
by Brandon from USA
| |
|
|
Andrew, I am in total agreement with everything that you said. I think she hasn't progressed as a live performer because she's always in her head trying to remember when the recorded vocals are gonna kick in. She's constantly looking down to the teleprompter as though she is singing karaoke to her own songs because she needs reminders for the backing track. It's so annoying. She needs to lower the keys even more already so that she can actually sing her own songs start to finish. Whitney, Patti, Mary J, Barbra Streisand, Chaka, Gladys, etc would never even on their worst days vocally.
Also, why does she keep giving these low energy performances like she did in Quatar? What is going on?

If Mariah had "literallly" already done what I was suggesting, I wonder what definitions of "alternating" and "interspersing" you are using?
Let's not have an argument about it. I appreciate what you are saying - there was possibly more variety than in previous Christmas shows. However, I really do mean going Christmas song, non-Christmas song, Christmas song, non-Christmas song, and so on.
Moreover, I really do think she should start lowering every song substantially in key - and by several notes. Nobody is expecting to hear her get to stratospheric heights anymore and I think even the press would cut her some slack on it for she is, after all, admired. But I think everyone would appreciate a smoother slide from lipped to non-lipped.
And she might even have more fun and not look so fraught with stage-fright?

My comment was out of concern for Mariah and nothing else. As a dedicated lamb from the beginning, I can be concerned and question things as I see them. You choose to follow blindly and that's ok for you. I want the best for MC and if something doesn't look right, I will speak on it. With that being said, I hope everything is ok and that we get to see more of her healthy soon.

So, if I may rephrase: "I am inferring that Mariah, in unspecified videos, was under the inflluence of drugs which I cannot see or name, leading to indeterminate behaviour, for which I have no evidence to present." Slow down there, Columbo. Don't crack the case too early, you won't make the end of the show.

While I'm enjoying this moment of MB30, I hate to be a negative Nancy, but did MC seem a bit "medicated" in those videos? She looked beautiful but something seemed a little bit off to me. I can't put my finger on it. I'm a very long time fan and can notice when she's a little different and there was something interesting going on here. Plus she's pretty much been MIA for a while. I actually agree with everything that you said. As a legend that has sold as many records as MC has, she should be a pro when it comes to live performances. Unfortunately she has always struggled when it comes to performing, which I think is mainly due to her lack of discipline to practice/rehearse for live shows and her loss of confidence in her voice. She often looks lost on stage or doesn't know how to gracefully move her body. There's actually choreographers who can teach singers how to move gracefully, how to emote, how to talk to your audience in between songs to keep them engaged (not just ramble a bunch of words) and even how to lip sync in a way that looks real (Celine). MC has access to use the best of the best in the business to help her be a better performer but most of her performances fall flat. I've seen her live in concert twice so I know what I speak. Where is the grown woman (not eternally 12), confident, sexy, commander of the stage who's been performing for over 30 years? I love MC and have been a lamb for over 30 years and want to always see her win but a lot of times she is her own worst enemy. I hate to see singers who have been performing only a fraction of the time MC has be able to run circles around her when it comes to performing live. There's no excuse.

Pride (102,952)
by Andrew from the UK
| |
|
|
Encouraged by Randy to read recent posts and post something myself, I've thought about what to write, whether I cared to opine on something relevant or if I even cared anymore about people reading my opinions. I no longer Google Mariah, watch new performances nor read messageboards. I listen to Mariah on Spotify and look forward to Randy messaging me about 1997 every so often.
But whilst the most holy and anointed month of alphabetti-spaghetti draws to a close I was encouraged to watch Mariah at LA Pride and see where I am at in relation to where Mariah is at. Suffice is to say: it's not for me. I am neither a preteen, a gay that claps my hands when I see something shiny nor a deluded sycophant flatly denying observable reality. This wasn't just offensive nonsense: it was badly executed offensive nonsense. And if the response to that is to explain that it's just 1) Mariah's personality and/or 2) a Pride show then the response is surely as offensive as the provocation. An inflatable unicorn? Drag queens? A bat-mobile? Groundbreaking. Unless you are either a preteen, a gay that claps their hands when they see something shiny or a deluded sycophant flatly denying observable reality, you must just think like the rest of the world that Mariah is now nothing more than a caricature of herself and she sees everyone else around her as a stereotype? There *are* gay peope who aren't "queens" as she is so fond of saying. Young gay people today are a world away from this.
Missing lip-syncing cues? Failing to execute any decent live notes? Prancing around the stage half-cut? Mumbling and rambling on, anxiously? This is not performance worthy of a "living legend". It's Pride. It's gay people looking for A) powerful representation B) a party and C) messages of hope, love and solidarity. What do Mariah's audience get? Mariah slurring something about having an album called Rainbow? Or didn't she utter some nonsense about rainbows meaning different things to different people? I can't bring myself to go back and watch it. The whole thing looked like a drag queen doing a Mariah Carey act and I genuinely think a drag queen would have done a much better job if somehow they were convinced to take on the career-ending gig of a lifetime. Pills and liquor seem to help.
I just finished watching Elton John's last ever UK performance which was as the closing headliner at the Glastonbury Festival last weekend. He's on another level - one that Mariah should be on. I danced in front of the television. I cried during Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me as a tribute to the late George Michael on what would have been his 60th birthday. And I cried at the very last moments of the concert where "I think it's gonna be a long long time" from Rocketman was drawn into a haunting bittersweet note followed by him bowing out with the band. That's a show. That's musicianship. That's a living legend.
Mariah's new era? Mariah in a Hall of Fame? Mariah making money outside of Christmas? Nobody's much caring. When Mariah Carey starts to give a shit about Mariah Carey's career then I will, too. Until then, I'm quite happy with Spotify and Randy's 1997 rants. Which usually indicate a splash or two.

My All (102,938)
by Brandon from USA
| |
|
|
I have been saying this for years. It seems that every year she struggles with it more and more and I don't understand why she keeps trying to sing it at every show. She can barely even do the low, breathy parts without struggling these days. It sounds painful when she tries to do the belting portions of the song. I cringe at the "feel your body, feel your body, feel your body" every time she does it. Let's not even talk about the lipped parts of the song that sounds vastly different from her current live vocals. MC, please retire that song from your live shows. I'm still good with WBT and Hero which aren't that difficult but My All can go.

This song needs to be retired from her set list for good. Mariah has never sung this song anything like on the record, talk less of singing it better. It is also one of her harder songs to sing because it's built like a tradition ballad and keeps building and has a clear big climax, she is yet to do justice to 25 plus years later. I don't know why she still keeps on singing this particular song in every show, that makes her vocal decline so obvious.

Hopes for Mariah’s Pride performance (102,865)
by Brandon from USA
| |
|
|
What are you guys hoping to see during Mariah's upcoming performance? I want to see a completely revamped set list with her performing a lot of her remixes. I don't want to see any long sequined gowns but more body suits, jump suits and short flirty dresses. I also want to see a confident, well rehearsed Mariah owning the stage. I do not want to see her in tight corsets or super tall heels that restricts her movement or singing. I don't want a bunch of lip syncing with an occasional "Aye" shout nor for her to look as though she's lost on stage and doesn't know where to go. I want her to properly warm up that golden voice and tear the house down like we know she can.

The Weekend collaboration (102,858)
by whisperingmisunderstandings from USA
| |
|
|
There was a moment in time where she was pushing that, even posting that IG story of her singing along at one of his concerts. I got the feeling that he wasn't interested, maybe thought it was beneath him to be collaborating with a "legacy" artist when he's in the prime of his career, and she felt dissed and stopped acknowledging him. Recently there was an awkward moment during one of her Twitter spaces and where she asked the fans who she should collaborate with, someone clearly said "The Weeknd" and she pretended she didn't hear and changed the subject lol. I don't see that ever happening, maybe in a few years when his career is on the decline.
