Great post. "I guess we in the Northern Europe drink so much that any American would say we were raging alcoholics." I live in an wine region, we have many wine festivals here (i just went on Friday to one) it's our culture. But yes, who knows what really happened to Mariah's voice? I think it's an combination of everything. "Vision of love" and "If it's over" are one of my favourites. The sound, her voice, the lyrics. Out of this world, pure Mariah magic. She will always be the best, if you look at her 90ies catalogue.

I don't know if I got your message right, so I wouldn't comment on that one, but some people do have a different sound after some years in the business, and other doesn't. If it is because of alcohol or not, I can't say. I know a few opera singers and they both drink and sing (concerts almost every day) with no problem combining that with drinking. I guess we in the Northern Europe drink so much that any American would say we were raging alcoholics, but still keep singing. Whitney and Dionne Warwick both sounded different from their debut and later in their careers. If that's because of drugs, I don't know. I think Mariah for some years was pushing her voice over a long period of time (1991-1996) and that combined with the whispering voice (really hurt your voice). If you listen to her singing after her debut, her voice was much lover when she sang live than in her recordings. Anyway alcohol or not, we'll never get that sound again.
I think I will be playing some Vision of Love today. And maybe some If it's Over.

Beyoncé has SirDavis American Whisky. She quite literally made an alcohol brand and sells them. She's so into drinking she made a whole business out of it. Mariah did the same with Black Irish. We can argue Beyoncé is a bigger alcoholic since SirDavis has 44% ABV, while Black Irish has 17%. However, Beyoncé has no vocal decline. If anything she got better. So no it's not alcoholism, your theory is ideologically inconsistent. Mariah simply has a different set of vocal cords, she has nodes and it only gets worse over time. And knowing Mariah's nonstop work ethic, she quickened her decline.

Happy anniversary (108,938)
by TJ from Norway

I think all have different views on those albums. I for example can't stand OSD. Well that's not the complete truth because I love/like like half a minute of the song (near the end).
On the Daydream album these are the best ones: Fantasy, Long Ago, Open Arms, I am Free, Always Be My Baby and Forever.
On the Music Box album: Dreamlover, Hero, Anytime You Need a Friend, Music Box, Without You, Everything Fades Away and Never Forget You.
If I list them up, it would be something like this: 1. Dreamlover 2. Music Box 3. Fantasy 4. Anytime You Need a Friend 5. Hero 6. Open Arms 7. Without You 8. Never Forget You 9. Always be My Baby 10. Everything Fades Away 11. Long Ago 12. Forever 13. I am Free
I think I need to make this into a play list on Spotify. She has many good songs.

Happy anniversary (108,924)
by Randy from USA

You know that's an interesting premise. And I'm ready to get off this stroke, medication, vocal nonsense. I feel like Music Box and Daydream are siblings with the same highs and lows. Each has monster hits (Dreamlover, Hero, Without You vs. Fantasy, One Sweet Day, Always Be My Baby). Each has a weakness (I've Been Thinking About You vs Long Ago). Each has a club song (Now That I Know vs. Daydream Interlude). Dave Jam Hall, Babyface and Walter make appearances on both. I think the reason Music Box is slightly weaker is Now That I Know sucks as much as I've Been Thinking About You so it has two weak tracks and Daydream has Looking In. There's no introspective, non-romantic love track on Music Box. Looking In is the precursor to Close My Eyes, Outside, Petals, Languishing and of course, the best Mariah Carey song of all time Right To Dream. So yea, to me Daydream is the better of the two but Music Box is no slouch. I still play tf out of Anytime You Need A Friend from Tokyo Dome and the Jermaine Dupri remix of Never Forget You. Oh and I do a nifty sing along to the male part of Everything Fades Away.

Cheese fries. How American. Eat carrots and you will reverse the age, darling. I was until this day sure that she had at least one boob job (both left (Dolly) and right (Parton) of course). But nothing dramatic like Pamela in the 90s. Anyway, I don't need new music, but would love some old stuff. Grunge or not.

I agree. I think Mariah had a subtle nose job around the Daydream era, after that, it’s hard to tell because she contours her nose a lot. Aside from several minor touch-ups here an there, a great dose a Botox, some cheek fillers, the occasional honey facial, and her freezer chamber routine, I doubt she's had anything major done.
I remember when people swore she’d had multiple boob jobs, only for it to turn out she was just rocking some serious push-up bras. My sister swears by those too, she buys them every ten years, but her husband says they feel hard as rocks, I don't know what that means. Anyway, I’m getting cheese fries.

I don't have any evidence on the case, but hasn't some fans here written about her lack of facial expressions and it (surgery) might a reason for it? I don't know. There has been times during her career that I have watched her on tv shows, and I have been thinking that her face looks different since last time I watched her perform. She's 56 this year, has tons of money and work in an industry where it's sadly "normal" to fix things.
Btw: 1 day, 14 hours and 39 minutes left before she release TEOM20.

I hope not. I can't stand the Kardashians. Naturally beauty is the best. I'm always shocked when I see Pricella Presley. You can't tell her age anymore, but there's no mimic, like a mask. I always think that's spooky. And she was auch a beautiful woman, she didn't need it. Women like Andie McDowell, Sigourney Weaver and Helen Mirren are super role models, they look good and natural.

Mariah is already a multi millionaires darling. She does't need to do voice trainig. This is not the 90's anymore. She can rely on pre-recorded track in which it's still her voice unlike other singer who used other singer's voice. All that matters is that she needs to look gorgeous on stage with the gowns, hair and make up.

Those that know me also know lists bring me joy. For completeness, here is the current most up to date download of reasons why Mariah can't or doesn't sing anymore. Let me know if any need adding I've forgotten.
1. Ear monitor malfunction 2. No humidifiers 3. Too cold 4. Too hot 5. Stage fright 6. Corset too tight 7. Heels too high 8. Preserving her voice 9. Scared of Michael Jackson's casket 10. Didn't want to upstage the Queen of Soul 11. Wanted to respect her peers 12. Bronchitis 13. Stressful divorce/break up 14. Arm in a sling 15. Pregnant 16. Not pregnant 17. Nodules 18. Too many splashes 19. Medicated 20. Backing singers missed their cue 21. Backing singers singing her part now baby 22. Foiled by Dick Clarke Productions 23. Late for the sound check 24. Not enough sleep 25. Too much sleep 26. Bipolar 27. Food poisoning 28. Mic wasn't turned up 29. Shit happens 30. Avoiding wrinkles

It's not only you. "When I Feel It" is not a bad song, it's just an unpolished filler. I never heard anybody claim it was a potential hit. I like it more than "Secret Love" and "Sprung" though. The "Once in a Lifetime" ringtone, had it be turned into a full song, it would've been a great one. There's one song that nobody ever talks about that could've been #1, it's called " Migrate".

So far he's acknowledged that she wanted to go in different directions from the start but also that she didn't like [Hero] and didn't want it on Music Box. He said that she said it was too white bread. He felt that deep down she loved it especially when it became such a big hit, but that he felt it was more that she didn't want her fiends to think she was selling out as such. But he ultimately said she was the one writing these lyrics and no one put those words into her head. I personally feel that she knew deep down these were great songs and the right direction but her own rebellious side wanted to distance herself from them. You can't force natural talent and those lyrics. He even says he should never have got involved the way he did, she should have kept it a business arrangement. He said he's seen it time and time again where artists want to move away from their core base. He is very complimentary of Mariah and accepts her upbringing and insecurities but again those early years of music no one was forcing her to write those lyrics, they came from the heart. Also he says that it was Mariah who proposed to him. I genuinely think he loved her and his own insecurities blinded him when she was wanting to experiment musically. Sometimes when people get together it can bring out the worst traits even when they both love each other.

I've just started reading Tommy Mottola's book from the point he met Mariah. Still got some to go but I was loving the part where he went down to the woodshop after Mariah said come down and meet Ben Marguiles. He says when he got there he was faced with Mariah singing. He said she was good on the demo but to hear her sing there in the woodshop studio was incredible and her voice was so powerful. It gave me goose bumps imagine witnessing that. He said it was then that he noticed her flirting with him and he had to speak to his therapist about her as he felt he was falling in love with her. I can't wait to read some more tonight.

That was a really good article. I also believe that Randy is correct about all the diva act keep her and rest of the world separate. People doesn't take her serious. Another perspective is that her voice was so good, that I guess people did think of her as a product, made by the record company.
