A full-throated defense of Glitter (113,547)

I can't remember Mariah saying that she always wanted to act when she was growing up. I do remember reading interviews where she said that she didn't want to be an actress, and that singers/musicians should stick to what they knew, which was music. If this was after the release of Bodyguard or Evita, I can't recall.

A full-throated defense of Glitter (113,544)

My acting coach said that for acting to be believable, the actor needs to have experienced the emotions, or at least been in close proximity to what they're trying to portray with their facial expressions. This is why Heath Ledger purposely isolated himself in a hotel room to develop the mindset of the Joker. He fully immersed himself in the psyche of his character. It's called method acting.
I'd say Mariah did well in scenes that have everything to do with being a singer-songwriter. Finding out her song was on the radio for the first time. Getting more excited as the melody she's writing improves. These are all emotions she had already felt, and they came out naturally in the movie.
But it was also sometimes inconsistent. For instance, she did really well lip syncing Don't Funk at that club when she was put on the spot by Dice, then did pretty poorly miming All My Life when she took over Sylk in the studio.
The more family-oriented emotions, like seeing her movie mom on drugs and wandering the streets, probably came from similar feelings to dealing with Alison. Then there are the Tommy-related emotions required for Dice's tantrums and jealousy. When he called Da Brat fat ass, she might have drawn from emotions tied to when Tommy degraded Diddy. Her acting was very strong in that scene in my opinion. Then being physically threatened by Terrence Howard because Dice didn't pay 100k. Those reference emotions could connect to what she felt when Tommy put a knife to her cheek.
I wouldn't say she was objectively bad, but a bit unseasoned. I don't think she was quite ready for a lead role just yet. I also felt like it needed better cinematography. I'd even argue better songs. Mariah has written such vivid songs. She quite literally paints a picture with her lyrics. This would have been the perfect opportunity to write another Underneath the Stars or Fourth of July, but instead we got the haunting, suicide-themed Twister, which felt awkwardly shoehorned into her mother's disappearance. It felt like, "whatever, we have to make use of the soundtrack, let's just put this here". Overall, the movie direction fell far short of her songwriting's standard.
Mariah's always said all she wanted to be was a singer and an actress growing up. Actress being there is a pretty big deal. I'd say with the right material and once all the inhibitions are gone, she could be great. She's proven this with Precious. I'm not shutting down MC just yet in her acting pursuit. She's got a larger emotions palette just from what she went through the last 15 years, meaning there are plenty of inspirations to take from.

Glitter - my wish for MC in 2026 (113,519)
by TJ from Norway

That's just my subjective opinion, just as yours is also subjective. I was at the cinema watching it and believe me it was cringe to sit there with only two others. The reason was not bad marketing, but bad acting and horrible reviews because of that.
Mariah doesn't express emotions when acting. She can make a small part in a movie ok, but no more than that. She doesn't use her voice other than in a monotone way, her hands are divaish when acting, and her face expressions doesn't look natural. She should not continue in that direction. That's my opinion, and nothing more, but I express it here.
Happy easter.

It's a bit harsh to say that it was embarrassing to watch Glitter. I don't agree with that. I enjoyed it very much.
Her small role in "The Bachelor" with Chris O'Donnell and Renée Zellweger- she was good there, basically playing the character similar to her role as Raychel from Wisegirls.
And let´s be real - neither Mariah or Whitney are actresses. Mariah was pushed to hard to work and the result was rushed.

Yes, I saw the movie twice with my friends at my hometown. I was a teen back then. We had a good time at the cinema, we almost had the cinema hall for ourself. I still have the cinema magazine and ticket. I have also poignant memories, it was the time the carefree 90ies really finally ended because of 9/11. But back to MC, I love Glitter the album, the movie is okay, it's not so bad. I have it on DVD, it was also my first DVD, it was quite expensive.

You can't compare the acting in Glitter to The Bodyguard. WH was clearly a better actress than Mariah. It was embarrassing to watch Glitter.

Yeah, but her ability to promote the movie and the album was severely limited by the fact that she was hospitalized twice for bipolar II disorder - once in Connecticut in July/August 2001 and once in Los Angeles in September 2001. These hospital stays directly conflicted with the rollout for the movie and soundtrack.
As I said, the movie is not great. It was a commercial vehicle to launch her into the movie industry so she could move into more respectable roles like the one in "Wisegirls".
And, yes, Webmaster, the acting in "Glitter" is on par with "The Bodyguard" and "Mahogany" - both of which received mixed to negative reviews but were redeemed by having hits from the respective soundtracks.

I believe that some of the post millennium fans don't appreciate that area because the music sounds dated to them. I too are so thankful for being able to experience that time and success. I guess it's how the fans of Taylor Swift have it today.
I remember taping all the shows, concerts and so on. Buying multiple singles because she released like a million versions of every hit.

Yup, we are a bunch of old timers, lol. What a magical concert. I remember one of my college roommates basically saying the same thing as critics at the time: Mariah was a studio creation. Then I played my roommate Emotions Unplugged. She was stunned, as I think a lot of critics were stunned and silenced. Mariah was the real deal. Which I'm not sure why even in 1992 many critics thought MC was a studio creation. Did they miss the Tatoo Club performances, Saturday Night Live, hello Vanishing, right? Anyway, no matter what we see today, there is no doubt of her once in a generation talent. I'll be forever thankful I lived to see it.

MTV Unplugged (113,415)
by Jamie from UK

33 years ago today Mariah recorded her MTV Unplugged session at the Kaufman Astoria Studios in New York. Can you imagine having gone to see this it would have been phenomenal. Her voice then was sensational and she was in my eyes then a class act. The way she held herself on that stage oozed soul, and a confidence that captivated the audience. While she says she wasn't confident at all at the time, her natural and grounded presence there was more powerful than anything she does now. There was no fanfares no dancers just raw talent, I sometimes wish she could have held onto this concept moving forward. Stayed in this genre as such and just been an artist that did rare small intimate gigs that made her more exclusive and sort after by the public. I'm speaking more from the artistry side of things, being more exclusive to me is somewhat more adhering to being out there filling arenas. Obviously it's hypothetical, but I was wondering would we be where we are now had she stuck to a more low key concept, where the music and the voice were front and center, with more quality adult contemporary songs, even the ones we've seen on HFIA, without the diva portrayal and hype. Would we have a better quality voice still? Would Mariah be less affected and still be herself. Would she be more connected and relatable? Whilst older would she still command the stage like she once did? Obviously this is me just putting a spin on things and in no way am I dissing her career path as I wouldn't still be here as a fan if I was. Would you like to have seen this path or something similar?

That Variety interview was so dry. You could tell the interviewer had done their homework and crafted some really compelling questions.
What is the deal with SUD? People have been asking about it for almost 6 years. What is it she is still working out?
What's the deal with Glitter. It's mid-March and you don't know if you're re-releasing (which makes taking it off streaming stupid) or making a deluxe? Shouldn't the factories be printing the vinyls now for a September 2026 release date?
Most importantly where the F is Daydream30?
Where is the state business woman who is supposed to be running this empire?

I know you didn't ask me, but I don't think Mariah would reach that spot with any song from that album. It's almost impossible for an artist to get a number one after that many years in the business. Cher did, but she did something completely new when it happened.

What a great post. I have the same thought about all the mentioned things. You described it perfectly. With the "current personality and her performance level", that's a good point too. I wonder what the answer could be about the current personality and performances? I don't know the answer but I would say jazz, blues and retro soul suits better than hip-hop or modern RnB songs for a legend like Mariah nowadays. "My love" is a highlight on HFIA and such a beautiful song and cover.

"TD is a fun song, and I agree that the intro beat and sample are fantastic. While the chorus is somewhat underwhelming, I still like the song, though I don't love it as much as her first singles from the 90s. 'Fantasy', 'Honey', 'Heartbreaker', and 'Emotions' are her four strongest first singles. Each of these songs features a chorus that people can easily sing and hum along to, which is something that 'TD' lacks."

I agree. I think regaining her chest and head tone vocal ranges and fixing the vocal damage far outweighs her retention of the whistle note range. Maybe she could go to the studio and record a whole barrage of whistle runs and background vocals and highlights she can use for later recordings, so that in case she loses her ability to do whistle notes, she can still put them in future albums. It would be an intense recovery post-surgery and she would have to swallow her pride and take speech training with a competent speech pathologist, and also singing/vocal training from real (not these celebrity vocal trainers that praise J-Lo to keep their job and say You did that Kween).

Nodules (113,229)

Sometimes I think that it could be drugs. WH did drugs and got this metallic voice, Dionne Warwick the same. Mariah got the metallic voice, but we don't know why. I doubt that it's the champagne. I know a lot of professional singers that drink, but got their voices intact.

Nodules (113,228)

I doubt Mariah had her nodules removed. The success rate for nodules removal especially today is high. If anything she would sound better. Her problem is she doesn't take care of her voice like she used to like in her younger days. A lot of fans say she has vocal damage but I disagree it's definitely the champagne. Vocal damage can be fixed. One of the things I love about the Caution album is that her voice sounds very good especially in. Even during the pandemic she showed she was in a good place vocally. I don't wanna judge Mariah but I definitely think she turned to drinking to cope with something. A lot of people in the industry turn to drugs or drinking to cope with the stress life of being an artist or because of loneliness/depression. I sometimes think would she be in a better place emotionally had she and Nick still been together. Even with Bryan she looked very happy and alive which makes me believe she might feel lonely at times. I truly believe her kids help a lot and give her a reason to live. I hope whatever she's going through especially health wise is helped by God.

Olympic performance (113,201)

It must have been all the diamonds that made her stiff. I would have been scared to death with all that money around my neck. Luckily I did not have any high expectations, and I liked that she had this really slow version. It's well known that she isn't a dancer, and the dancers that she used to have on stage are boring to look at. It has been the same style and moves since Dreamlover in 1993.

Sorry but what have I been looking at... Mariah looked great, sounded great but hey it was completely lipped and pre-recorded. No energy at all, stiff and in my opinion a waste of time. Why not a little more uptempo version of Volare? With some great dancers and stuff. So for me A No No.

I just listened to the song, and I have to say that there's many similarities. The melody is completely different, but the message is the same. MC-2026 has been a low point for me so far. I tried to listen to her latest album the other day, and I grimaced (like Calvin in "Calvin and Hobbes") after few seconds listening to it. It's probably because I'm getting older, and she is trying to reach out to a younger audience. I'm not sure about that strategy. It doesn't seem to work out for her. If It's true that The Rarities 2 is going to be released, I think everything will change. I've been a fan for 36 years this summer, and it can't end because of the latest release.

I haven't watched any of the performances, but based on what I've read here, I'm not really motivated to. The celebrity era is over. People just don't care the same way anymore because celebrities are constantly in our faces.
It used to be exciting when an artist dropped a project, promoted the hell out of it, and then disappeared once it ran its course. They gave us a reason to miss them.
I remember when we knew Mariah was about to release an album two months in advance because a Maxi-Single would come out first, the anticipation was insane. Now everything is instantly available. Sure, it's convenient, but it kills the buzz and the sense of anticipation that made it all feel special.

Possible The Rarities II songs (113,091)
by TJ from Norway
| |

|
Are we sure that she is releasing Rarities part 2 this year? I hope for more than two discs. It should be at least four. Yes I'm greedy. One disc with all those songs that have other versions than the album cuts (like for example All in Your Mind), one with SUD, one with different live songs that haven't been on CD before (If It's Over - SNL, the duet with Bolton and so on) and one with the Paris Charmbracelet concert (with the band introductions). I'm sure I could make a fifth disc as well, but that's Mariah's job. Oh dear, I forgot her demo tape. I need five to six discs.

2026 Mariah (113,073)
by Stacey from USA

I turned 48 last year (born in October of 1977). When I hit 40, my kids were 9, 6, and 3. For years before that, I had them convinced I was only 23. Every so often, I would add a year. So on my 40th birthday, my husband showed my math guru son (the 6 year old) my birth certificate. He asked my son, how old is Mommy? He looked at my birth year and did the math in his head, and said with the most utter look of disgust, "You lied." That story still cracks me up. Honestly, I think why HFIA resonates so much with me is because like Mariah, I am here for it all too, the shakes and withdrawals, etc. I own every experience I've had, good or bad. It has made me who I am today. It's been a rough couple of years teaching special education. Not the kids, but working with adults, particularly those who evaluate your performance unfairly. I had to up my anxiety medication because of it. I didn't think MC could come close to inspirational lyrics from Hero or Fly Like A Bird, but she absolutely crushed it with Nothing Is Impossible. Those last few seconds when the piano plays the final melody and the song fades out gets me every time. I've had to fight for everything I have. Anyway, don't know where that all came from, lol. But, I guess it explains why I love HFIA so much, and am so grateful I have those beautiful songs to listen to and remind me I am enough.

Born in the 70's. Turning 50 this year, but I claim that it is 29 (again). Working as a teacher and have colleagues that used to be my pupils. And the worst part is that they are now 30. Haha.
I still remember being 14 and listening to VOL on my stereo. I was lucky that my parents gave me this rack music system with huge speakers for my confirmation as a youngster. I'm still unsure if my neighbours, 5 or 6 houses away from us was of the same perception.
Anyway, so many good memories.

Yes, I feel the same way. Lol. When I think of 97 for example, I'm like it was yesterday. Spooky. But you're an 80ies born kid too right? When we age, we are like wine, we only get better. Even with a little wrinkle here and there and maybe some little aches, but inside still very young. (Most of the time.) In Norway I heard there's the friluftsliv. A very heathy lifestyle. So I'm sure, there's no horror. But the time flies too fast, that's so true.

And Greenland was originally Norwegian territory, but we lost it in 1814 to Denmark. Anyway. What do you guys think she's going to sing I Italian? Is it Hero?

By the way things are going, in summer it will be renamed Trumpland. Interesting fact: Did you the US Virgin Islands were Danish and sold to the US, and later on, one of them was bought by no one else but Epstein.

The worst part is that I feel like it's just a couple of years ago, and then I look into a mirror. Horror.

Good question. I wonder too. And I miss lyrics like "There's got to be away". I can still relate to it. And it's still up-to date and maybe always will. More than with luxury bags LV, shoes or a private plane.

Rumor has it she's releasing a new song in the summer called "Greenland". So, don't lose hope.

Mariah wrote There's Got To Be A Way, back in the early 90's, late 80's. I wonder if she is still up to date of how the world is today.
