I feel like this whole discussion has been misunderstood. At no point did anyone put them in the same category, in fact quite the opposite, it was mentioned multiple times that Taylor is majority hype vs talent while Mariah is the opposite so it almost seems unfair. But to your point Taylor isn't where she is just because she is current. There are plenty of current talented artists who haven't reached her level of impact that we've seen from her in the past 2 years. People, including big publications, are even scared to write anything negative about her. All that being said, let's give credit where she's due, Taylor does write her own stuff and hardly uses that many co-writers. She wrote whole of "Speak Now" by herself and lot of tracks on her current album has her solo credits. She's no Beyoncé changing one word and then getting credit.

Taylor's "cultural impact and craze" on the music industry today is exactly because of that, because she exists today, where social media, marketing manipulations and bombardment with feuds with exes and writing about them is highly accessible.
If she started her career when Mariah started, she would be nowhere. Non existent. Mediocre singer with writing abilities only if she is in a team with 15 more people who are co writing the song.
So please, let's not put Mariah and Taylor in any category together. Ever.

Side note to this (and this isn't a direct response to anyone's opinion just my thoughts) the aspect of songwriting. Mariah can write circles around Taylor because Mariah's songwriting is more graceful, mature, elegant and eloquent. Not only her lyrics and music but her layering and creating a wall of sound with just her voice. Yet unfortunately songwriting is not what Mariah is known for and I think from day 1 they should have highlighted her songwriting more than her voice because there's no hiding her voice but her songwriting wasn't and isn't well known because she's not out there with a guitar in hand. This was a missed opportunity on her team's part of another aspect that set Mariah apart. She has 19 #1's but not a lot of people know that 18 of those are self penned, some as early as when she was a teenager. Taylor's team puts a lot of highlight on her songwriting.

Hi Tony, I'm going to assume that you were responding to my post. First of all, I never said Taylor and Mariah were in the same league, especially vocally. I said that they are both known for their song writing, which is true. Second unless someone is living under a rock, there is no denying (whether a person likes it or not) the cultural impact and craze that Taylor has on the music industry today. The only one close to having her impact is Adele, but due to vocal issues, she's been MIA.
Third you may not be a fan of Taylor, I'd even admit that I'm not a fan of her last few albums, but there is no denying that some of her early work (especially the country music, not pop) was quality work, and like Mariah, she has been able to have major success in different music genres.
It may not be your cup of tea, but just like some people didn't or don't like Mariah's music (which I personally think they are crazy for not liking) that doesn't mean that Mariah or her career is trash and the same applies to Taylor. Anyway I'm done talking about Taylor now, since this is a Mariah board, but we shouldn't trash or minimize other people's work, or achievements, just to put Mariah on a pedestal.

I just hope we get Rarities 2 and one more new album. Then I'll be content. As much as I love Caution and feel like it is a great body of work, something (some spark) just seems missing from it. Also, I know many of you won't like to hear this, but I'm not interested in Mariah making a duet album, gospel or Jazz album. I dream for her to make a modern pop/rnb album in the vain of Daydream/EMC=2, with one WBT type power ballad. One has a right to dream.

I've come to accept that Mariah won't have another big era. Let alone anything remotely close to TEOM. She no longer has the drive or hunger to prove herself and that's not bashing her, it's just the circumstance. Back then she had the fire because she was still young and people had written her off and disposed of her all because her ex husband decided to be messy. She had to reclaim her throne. Now she's settled into her legend status, she has her 2 babies, she is earning a lot from touring. She has nothing left to prove so she won't go as hard. Plus the promo aspect. Nowadays promo is everything. People have short attention spans and you gotta really set yourself apart by doing creative promo and I don't think Mariah has that team. In fact we don't known who her team is. Even her social media is not at the level of someone of her status. I was living in delulu land for a while hoping for one last hurrah haha but I think I have now accepted this is the new reality of icon. If she does prove me wrong I would be the happiest but I doubt it. I just hope she's mentally in a good space and we get the chance to enjoy some new material when she's ready. Whether it's an album or collabs.

It has been a great discussion this week about Taylor and insight into this whole Swifty phenonenon. We can't deny Taylor is riding high off roads paved from our true trailblazer and trendsetter MC. I am really ready for Mimi to comeback one last time with her most successful album since TEOM. I know she has at least one more left in her. Where are you Mike Will Made It? Mimi needs you again.

Hahaha you know being a lamb I pay extra attention to lyrics. Yes, I know the interview you are talking about, it was a few years back when her career was going through a decline. I agree most artists try to maximize their gains at their peak and yes Mariah used to release albums almost every year for the first 5 years and every 2-3 years after that, but no artist released as much as Taylor did in the last 2 years. 2 re-recordings, 2 new albums and a tour. Also hard launching her relation with Kelce haha. I'm reading many articles where people are saying it's too much too soon.

Haha Mimi L has been paying attention to Taylor's lyrics. To be honest I quite liked Folklore and Evermore. Midnights grew on me. All the songs on this album are pleasant but tend to blur into one long two hour song.
I read an interview of her's (Taylor) recently where she said she knows her years are numbered now that she's crossed 30 and she wants to work as hard as possible and create as much music as she can while she's still popular. I didn't quite know how to feel about that. On one hand I appreciated her awareness, on the other hand I felt like she's making herself into the fast food equivalent of music. Of course every artist wants success and thrives on it but it felt like commercial success is paramount to her before all.
Which then lead me to think this was Mariah in the 90s. She created the most albums, most regularly while she was commercially successful. When they stopped selling as much, she slowed down majorly. I suppose that's human nature (and business).

Same boat. I won't lie. I enjoy a few of her songs and I do think she's talented but her PR team and fans put her on this god like pedestal which is too much. I feel like her material is the same as when she was 16 only with a more polished writing. I find it amazing how she continues to bash people and no one bats an eye. In the new album she again brings up Kim K and says her mom wished Kim was dead and I thought wow imagine if someone said that about her. Same with her bashing Matty Healy (that guy from what I have seen is a thorough mess) but at the same time she is lashing out at her fans for being shocked about his relationship with her, asking them to stop "bitching and moaning" and calling them names. She knows her songs send her fans in a frenzy to go attack her exes and she makes sure they know which ex she's talking about by putting specific clues in her songs and then pretending to be shocked when they decode it. She talks multiple times about cheating on her partners but then is pissed when her partner does the same to her and her fans also just causally forget that she is also doing something wrong. Anyways I just find it funny how she does things to others that she claims she's the victim of.

This is not a shade at all, but I'm just being real. I never really got the whole Taylor Swift thing, I can barely listen to a few songs. I can't really point to a specific reason why. We have hit a point where music is disposable, almost to the point of just reading their diary. Releasing an album with 31 songs and many artists are doing this because that's how the charts work. Nicky Minaj and Drake have been doing this as well. Again, not a shade, just being real. We love everybody.

The entertainment industry isn't too forgiving of female stars after a certain point. Think about it, few years back Rihanna was at this high where we were scared she's about to overtake Mariah's record of #1's and now it seems like music is the farthest thing on her mind and she's enjoying her down time. Beyoncé too has lost some of her impact, she's still big but not the same as before. Look at Ariana, she was churning out hit after hit and her current album almost vanished into thin air. She's one of the biggest streaming artist so her latest stats were disappointing for her. When you over saturate yourself on the public eye for so long it leads to them losing interest after a point.

Possibly. But there is not another up and coming female pop artist who can take her place right now. I think she has at least 10 more years of a popularity high. Don't let her star in a major movie with a hit soundtrack. That would add five more years. Lol.

I often wonder how a Daydream album would sell in 2024 if it was released in 2024. Would it sell a million copies plus during in its first week and break Spotify records? Would Fantasy, One Sweet Day and ABMB break streaming and iTunes records? I picked Daydream because that is when MC's career went into overdrive and her popularity increased. Tortured Poets Department seems to be Taylor Swift's Daydream. Her popularity is so high right now. She could release a David Guetta and Zedd TPD remix album in the Fall and it would sell 1.2 million plus copies too.

It's her and her team's PR strategies that are impeccable. She went from being a social pariah to the biggest musical star in current times. She's talented yes but that isn't what led to her immense fame. Her team and Taylor herself are very business savvy and they created this sense of FOMO around her where people are scared to miss out on the Taylor Swift phenomenon. She feeds pieces of her lives to her fans and created this sense of "oh she's so relatable" bond which makes her look accessible yet a mystery all at once. Also her promotions are very engaging and strategic. She has become this entity where she can do no wrong. Although Mariah and Taylor are at very different stages in their careers, promotional aspect of Mariah's career especially in the last decade has seriously been lacking.

Taylor's marketing is undoubtedly genius. The way she created engagement and mystery around her release. Her Easter eggs, the QR code hunt. Her album releases are almost an event in itself. She really knows how to promote her stuff and promote her artistic abilities. Taylor, like Mariah, is not a dancer but still manages to create a strong stage presence.

I'm only a casual fan of hers, but I really love how she markets all of these album releases. She creates a lot of excitement and brings it back to the days where you would just get super excited to buy CD, etc.
Honestly, if Mariah released some of her albums with different packaging, different colors, etc. at the same time during her heyday, I'm sure a lot of us would buy more than one copy. I know I would.

Are we really using words like "whoring" just cause you're frustrated? After being a Mariah fan for so long, lambs should have better vocab. Also have you actually been to a show or are you just riled up for nothing? Lastly Mariah's Christmas albums and songs are like tradition now, even if she doesn't push it, it still sells. Only thing she's doing is touring Christmas which people have been asking her to do.

Honestly I don't know, could be a lot of things. One could be just out of fear, my aunt had an accident where her shoulder got dislocated, it fully healed but some trauma or something led her to never raise her hand any more above a certain limit. Let's not forget she fell multiple times. One was when she was pregnant with the twins and just flat fell on stage, then the #Beautiful incident. She probably is just scared of falling in public again. But from the footage I saw of the show, she's moving around my herself instead of using 2 men to move her around, which is a start.

Maybe I used the wrong word to describe what seems to me was the start of her popularity and decline on the charts. #Beautiful should have done better on the Hot 100. What caused it to stall at #15 on the chart? It had all the right elements for a monster 6 weeks at #1 type of song.

I agree with this. I've seen nothing but good reviews from people who actually attended including them going on multiple dates. She isn't scamming anyone by saying come to this show to get the best vocal experience of your life. It's her celebrating a milestone. Taylor's situation is vastly different where she is manipulating her fans to buy the same songs in different collectible packaging to manipulate the charts and a cash grab.

Stage confidence? (106,178)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

I don't think we're talking enough about her improved stage confidence. Now don't get me wrong, she still has room left. But in all the clips I've seen she's walking around, holding her own dress train, moving all without 2 men guiding her. While this may seem bare minimum, I can hardly remember the last time Mariah was walking around by herself. Now all we need is her to stop relying on her teleprompter and just let go and enjoy herself. It's nice to see mostly great reviews on social media. I think us fans dissect her every move too much.

I get the intention being how she got from the debut to TEOM, that makes sense. I personally would have preferred a setlist that starts with It's Like That, and then shows how TEOM influenced all her albums post TEOM. Really focusing on her recent catalog, she doesn't incorporate her new music nearly enough. This would be my dream set list for this residency: ILT SIO Say Somethin' Mine again One and Only/So Lonely I Wish you Knew Get Your Number DFAU I'm That Chick Touch my Body Stay in Love Dance Remix Side Effects Love U long time Obsessed Candy Bling H.A.T.E.U #Beautiful Dedicated You're Mine (Eternal) You Don't Know what to Do Caution GTFO (edited version) The Distance A No No WBT FLAB as the closer

I wouldn't say her popularity declined during MIAM. In fact #Beautiful could easily have been her next top 10 hit but after the accident she dropped all promo. Same with the rest of the roll out. Her delaying it due to the title being leaked, then releasing random singles with no proper treatments and no promo. People were still interested in her during this era, she just vanished.

I was scratching my head after watching Xavier's video. The facade of a total package artist is front and center now. Maybe we will never see MC16 released. This is what MC used to be through the eras 1-7

Thanks for sharing. I think I read she plays music to I Didn't mean to turn you on and Boy when she's changing. Set list looks good. I would like her to add GYN on some dates. She looks great and I know she will get more comfortable with more dates.

The theme of the show is how she got to TEOM, from her debut and through he career to show why TEOM was and is an important album. From what I've seen there are spoken parts that are played between songs, almost like the audio book. Speaking of the show, I've been highly impressed by the presentation of the set, and how it's all put together. Her voice is supremely better than when we all saw that clip of VOL from a while back. The discussion of what is pre-recorded or lipped is tired and old - she is singing live what she can throughout the show and it sounds great. We just have to adjust to the new singing style that she is adopting and it's working from what I can see and hear. As for deep cuts, plenty of deep cuts from what I've seen. Set list is roughly and order may not be correct: VOL Emotions Make it happen Can't let go I'll be there Dreamlover/remix Hero Without you Fantasy Butterfly Babydoll The toof My all Breakdown Close my eyes Looking in (there have been some reports of a Glitter/Charmbracelet medley but I suspect that's when she is off stage) I wish you knew It's like that Shake it off Your girl Circles Say something We belong together Fly like a bird That's quite a good set list, I can only dream she decides to take this internationally.

Ya I was like wow that's so random that she stops at TEOM but what you said makes sense although I think this would have been a good opportunity for her to promote some of her relatively newer albums like singing The Distance, #Beautiful, A No No etc.

Mimi L. from the setlist I saw (not sure how accurate it was), it seemed like she was doing an "eras" show - going along chronologically, closing with TEOM. In some ways that does seem odd that she's leaving out some great stuff from later but then that was last great "era". E=MC2 fizzled out too soon after TMB.

Did we get the full set list? I'm surprised there's no DFAU. She could have done a medley of One and Only and So Lonely. I saw she started with VOL. That's odd since the show is supposed to be a celebration of TEOM and she had ILT, SIO as perfect openers. Was there a reason behind her doing older songs for a majority of the show and then TEOM later? If so why no songs from albums after TEOM? All things aside she looks stunning, the gold dress she wears at the beginning of the TEOM set was beautiful and very TEOM coded. What I loved about some of the videos are that she was walking around by herself and even did a mini almost sprint. All these visually creates a more engaging show rather than using dancers as crutches. So she'll only get better. I hope with each show she also stops relying too much on the teleprompter but as always her shows getting better with more dates. The stage looks nice and moody very TEOM coded. All things asides I think in person the show was a lot better than whatever we can see from low res videos.

I was hoping she will perform Mine Again, GYN, One and Only, DFAU and ILT. Orrrr she is doing some reimagined versions of these songs. Idk.
