About Bill from the UK: I love Mariah more than you do.

London Daydream Tour Attendee.

Re: Videos (90,729) (90,732) by Bill from the UK
Haha. I would say to watch I Don't so you can judge for yourself but considering everyone else has put it on their worst list, I'd feel bad sapping 3 and a half minutes from your life when you'd be better off watching Breakdown again and enjoying yourself.

I only watched half of Infamous before giving up. I suddenly realised Mariah was standing there in her lingerie so then switched out for the timeless classiness of Hero.

Re: Heartbreaker question (90,700) (90,703) by Bill from the UK
I think it was a product of its time, but yes, it didn't age as well as some of the others.

Re: Heartbreaker question (90,698) (90,699) by Bill from the UK
The fight scene with Bianca alone is what makes that video so great. One of her best single launches ever. Having said that, my favourite videos are the three from Emotions. Her look was just perfection and they were all beautifully shot.

And in Dreamlover and AIWFCIY and kind of in Honey.

Re: Played on the radio (90,638) (90,647) by Bill from the UK
In London, I've only ever heard the urban stations play Fantasy remix. She is mainly played on easy listening stations. Hero and I'll Be There I hear the most, occasionally Without You and We Belong Together. Obviously AIWFCIY is inescapable at Christmas time haha.

Re: Chart manipulation (90,616) (90,617) by Bill from the UK
It doesn't make sense as Sony pulled Can't Let Go from sale when it was heading for #1 to increase sales of the Emotions album, so why manipulate everything else?

Re: Tommy cried to Beautiful Ones (90,607) (90,610) by Bill from the UK
Same happened to me. In fact I used to skip it frequently, then one day I just "got it" and it all clicked into place. I have days when I play nothing but this song over and over again.

Re: Tommy cried to Beautiful Ones (90,596) (90,597) by Bill from the UK
It's interesting because it seems like the Butterfly record really impacted Tommy, though he never said as much in his biography. Mariah said he left her a note saying "butterflies are free to fly - fly away", a line from Somebody Saved My Life Tonight by Elton John, which was then sampled in the Butterfly remix. I guess hearing Butterfly and knowing it was directed at you and how much you're stifling somebody would make you feel dreadful. They had a very complex relationship, I hope the memoirs really delve into their time together properly. But as with everything, there are so many NDAs flying around she probably can't.

In other news, please Lord bring the St John the Divine concert with MC25. Amen.

Re: Merry Christmas repacking (90,576) (90,577) by Bill from the UK
I am praying that the repackaging includes the St John the Divine concert as I mentioned a few posts ago. If you get down on your knees at night and pray to the Lord he's gonna make it happen. Make it happen.

It wasn't aimed at you, it was a general observation about how MC fans usually react in these situations.

Re: Old Town Road (90,479) (90,482) by Bill from the UK
But streaming is how music is consumed these days. If Old Town Road was released in the 90s, it would have sold a lot of physical copies, as that was how music was consumed.

Re: Old Town Road (90,476) (90,478) by Bill from the UK
Yet, if Mariah got a 20 week reign at the top with her next song due to streaming, it'd be completely legitimate. It's one rule for Mariah, another for everyone else it seems. The record got broken, let's move on. Mariah took the news with grace and class, so should we.

Re: Old Town Road (90,467) (90,469) by Bill from the UK
I do agree though that One Sweet Day was a bit of a mystery for me all these years. It's a nice song. But 16 weeks at number one? I think We Belong Together deserved its long reign at the top, if not longer, but it's interesting OSD came and went on the rest of the charts worldwide in a matter of weeks. I feel sorry for the US as Sony canned the Open Arms single release there as OSD was still number one as Open Arms was being released all over the rest of the world. Also it is quite fitting that the record was ended by Always Be My Baby. But that song was number 2 for weeks and weeks as a consequence, and deserved a much longer run at the top of the chart, given how it ended up standing the test of time and is still played on US radio to this day.

Re: New album (90,454) (90,457) by Bill from the UK
The fact that the St John the Divine concert hasn't been released should be a criminal offence. We are talking Mariah in her most confident, agile, and absolute best. Tommy was right when he said Joy to the World was the best live performance he'd ever witnessed, it kills me that she sung other numbers from the album and they've remained locked up in the vault ever since.

Re: New album (90,451) (90,452) by Bill from the UK
I'll gladly hand over my hard earned cash for a revisiting of Merry Christmas. Here's what I'd include:

1. Original album re-mastered
2. Joy to the World remixes
3. St John the Divine full concert
4. A disc of all the numerous versions and re-workings of AIWFCIY, maybe include all the covers by other artists as well as that is a nice touch
5. The original videos
6. TV appearances and interviews from 1994 promoting the album

It'd take 10 minutes to yank all that out of the Sony archive and stick it up for digital purchase/streaming.

Re: Fly abandonedly into the rainbow (90,417) (90,420) by Bill from the UK
Yeh the Rainbow tour was a mess. Especially as it followed on from the Daydream tour. I was there, June 23rd, 1996. One of the best nights of my life. Don't know if I've ever mentioned that.

Re: Fly abandonedly into the rainbow (90,414) (90,416) by Bill from the UK
I don't completely agree. Certainly the UK branch did a great move in shoving Westlife onto Against All Odds which scored Mariah a number one record here and boosted sales of Rainbow during its ending run on the chart. The question I would ask is, was Mariah that heavily invested in promoting it, or did she simply want to sever ties and move on with the film and her new label? As people have said, the album is fine but in reality none of the tracks except Heartbreaker held a candle to her prior material, which was all AAA rated.

Re: Fly abandonedly into the rainbow (90,368) (90,369) by Bill from the UK
Heartbreaker was definitely originally intended for All That Glitters but when the film got delayed MC thought it was too good to shelve and pretty much made Rainbow off the back of it. Personally I don't mind the album. Crybaby, Petals, After Tonight, Bliss, CTTA and Heartbreaker and its remix are all great. Also I like the bright cover, all her others were quite muted and dull up until then.

Re: Fly abandonedly into the rainbow (90,363) (90,364) by Bill from the UK
Did I Do That is in the same grouping as Boy, Crapfinity, Infamous, Can't Say No and Why You Mad. One of the worst things she ever shat out.

Re: 4th of July revisit (90,355) (90,356) by Bill from the UK
The beauty in The Roof is in a number of elements. The lyrics are one. It is a beautifully painted picture and, in a way, perfectly describes that nostalgic longing for something that never was. As it happens, I had a similar experience with someone, on a rooftop bar nonetheless, that was intense but went no further. I do re-live that moment from time to time, so it does really speak to me. The music is the other. The sample is perfect and it creates this atmosphere like no other song on the album. It has a sense of urgency to it, and is melancholic and subdued, and the beat is almost like the city below or the driving rain. The visuals is the other piece of the puzzle. It's the transition from the antics on the roof (her memory), and the shots in the limo. As it's raining outside, she is warm and cosy in the limo reminiscing, but then to experience that night again, she opens the sun roof and lets the rain fall on her. All the pieces together just worked. And the way she sings so softly and gently, is like a distant memory or dream. I love the exiting ad lib of "last night I had the strangest dream. It was actually quite symbolic. And I whispered that I love you, very subtly". It is just poetry. Can't believe so many people on this planet haven't heard it.
