And yet, when I said Thirsty was indeed about Damizza, everyone mocked me and said it was about Nick, when it so clearly isn't.

We won't know what really happened during that period until Mariah's book, The Elusive Memoirs of an Emancipated, Cautious, and Imperfect Chanteuse, is released. Assuming of course she even addresses it. Personally I'm not sure why Damizza would lie, but as it's been said it's probably an exaggeration of the truth.

The only song I can see Mariah covering these days is Rihanna's Umbrella. Only because Mariah can pull off the "eh eh eh" part live, as that's all she can manage without a wall of backing singers, pre-record, hoists, pulleys, chaise lounges, ear pieces, corsets and lip syncing. God loves her.

The thing no one seems to have realised is Mariah was popular in the 90s. Fact. Mariah's fans from the 90s are now inching ever closer towards middle age. They still buy their music because they always did. So the fact her albums don't sell indicates that fanbase from back then has all but depleted. As it has been said, she needs to reinvent herself just as she did in 1997. A complete overhaul of image, style, music, producers, singing style etc. would be something that would be of interest to everybody - both old fans, newer fans, and millennials. Nick Cannon really shed light on it when he said she got offended when Ariana referred to her as a "legend", as she very clearly saw herself as competing at that level and wasn't ready to be relegated to that status. It's ironic really that in 1996 MC made that comment about Madonna, "Really I haven't paid attention to Madonna since second grade, when she used to be popular." Oh Mariah. What goes around comes around.

I love Emotions. That album is divine. The whole Emotions era was brilliant and her look in those three videos was nothing short of breath taking. That was "Classic Mariah" through and though and I wonder how things would have gone had she not gone down the pop route of Music Box and stuck to soul. The mind boggles. For me, mis-step albums are hard to define. I think one is (CB, Memoirs, E=MC2), but when I listen to them, I love more or less every song haha. For me she's never put out a bad album which is why I love her so much.

Poor Rainbow. That album is a bop. The summery 80s vibe of Heartbreaker, the beautiful message and vocals of CTTA, the sensuality of Bliss and those delirious high notes, the longing of After Tonight, the sass of X-Girlfriend, and then the closing of Petals, Rainbow and Thank God I Found You. Admittedly there's a couple of issues like How Much and Did I Do That, and it does seem like it was thrown together (removing covers, interludes and remixes it has like, 1 song on it) but I still love it.

Oh Mara. I am so, so sorry. I don't know what to say. Like others have said, your dear sweet mother was elated and so happy when you met Mariah. I don't know what your beliefs are but to me that is like God is giving you happiness to help ease your devastating news. You are so loved. Your lovely mother is shining down on you from heaven.

Honestly B I give up. You're right. It's an unused track from Emotions that was written to sound exactly like a song from Emotions in order to deliberately leave it off Music Box at Tommy's demand as it is too urban.

Open to interpretation. "Long ago, you used to want me. Now it's all so far away, but you still haunt me" is the same as "I can't remember when you last were tender, as it's always touch and go, the silence chills me to the bone". Both indicate someone used to be passionate about her and now they're not. And PS Everything Fades Away was published in 1993. Don't know where this "unused Emotions track" theory sprang from (based on no evidence at all) unless you can point me to the quote saying that?

Agree. It's the same for God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman (which wasn't designated a bonus track, it was simply the ending of Merry Christmas, again, everywhere except America). Jesus Oh What a Wonderful Child is a brilliant, amazingly delivered performance, but I loved how the acapella of GRYMG dials it all back down and again leaves the album on a somewhat haunting note. Why settle for one Mariah when you can twenty of them harmonising with each other? During Rainbow promo interviews, MC said it was her first album that ended on a "happy note", which indicates she may have viewed EFA as the closer for Music Box, much as some people may not want to hear it. I don't buy this whole Tommy "demanding" songs be removed notion as there is zero evidence for that. If that was the case, EFA wouldn't have been on the Hero single nor on more releases of Music Box than it wasn't. As for Slipping Away, arguably Long Ago has the exact same theme and message and that remained on the album without a problem. I prescribe to the theory that it was in fact replaced with Melt Away, which was originally planned by Mariah and Babyface to be part of Waiting to Exhale.

Music Box feels like it's missing something when it ends with All I've Ever Wanted. It's a beautiful song, but it's no album closer. Everything Fades Away adds a whole new layer and element and haunting end to the record. It's epic, especially the exchange between Mariah and the background singer ("so hard for me to let you go"). It's like how the debut was originally going to end with Prisoner. All I've Ever Wanted is the Prisoner of Music Box, only without the sassy rap.

Original Music Box track listing (88,465)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Apologies to wade in during all the A No No talk (great video by the way), but the original tracklisting for Music Box surfaced on a promo item on eBay, thought I'd share.
1. Dreamlover 2. Hero 3. Anytime You Need A Friend 4. Without You 5. Now That I Know 6. Just To Hold You Once Again 7. Never Forget You 8. Do You Think Of Me 9. All I've Ever Wanted 10. Fade Away (this would be re-titled "Everything Fades Away") 11. I've Been Thinking About You 12. Music Box
It's an interesting sequencing. For me Everything Fades Away loses its impact not being the final track on the album (sorry you all in the US missed out). It does also corroborate that Do You Think Of Me was originally planned to be on the album (as alluded to on the Dreamlover singles, where it states both songs are taken from the forthcoming album). Music Box is a nice ending to the album though.

Someday, I Don't Wanna Cry, There's Got To Be A Way, Emotions, Make It Happen, Dreamlover, Anytime You Need a Friend, All I Want for Christmas Is You, Fantasy, Always Be My Baby, Honey, My All, The Roof, Breakdown, I Still Believe, and Heartbreaker all from the 90s all had extras and actors other than Mariah in them. In fact, it's easier to list her solo videos from the 90s. Vision of Love, Love Takes Time, Can't Let Go, and Butterfly. Not including concert videos here of course, or duets.

How did the Caution tour rank by comparison to your others Licia? I've only seen Mariah twice, at the Daydream and Rainbow tours in London. I sort of don't mind that I'm too poor to ever see her as the fact I was at the Daydream tour during her absolute prime is one of my most treasured memories from my whole life.

Agree, it should have been done around 1994 as Jesus Oh What a Wonderful Child and Joy to the World at St John the Divine are probably the closest things we'll get to "Churchriah".
