At this point, what on earth is there left to lose? Her voice has gone. You, me, even J. Lo could have gone up on that stage and delivered better vocals than Mariah did. Everything good is lipped, everything live is either flat, off key, or sounds painful. Boyz II Men gave a dignified, decent performance, and sounded absolutely fine 25 odd years after Madison Square Garden. Mariah was absolutely dreadful by comparison. We are all hurting here, and it seems the lipped Vision of Love was the eye opener for many. Some of us, myself included, have been beating this drum for a long time. (102,681) by Terna from Nigeria Let's not be too hard on her, and still remember that she might be doing the best she can with what's left of her ability right now, which from the clips we saw is not much. Her voice issues are serious seeing as how many times she kept sipping tea and still it wasn't enough. At this point, her options are slim – it's voice therapy or the much dreaded surgery. Being in her shoes must be very scary as we all know what happened to Bonnie Tyler's voice and Julie Andrews more recently. I know it scares Mariah to think of surgery and putting her gift, career and future all on the line. What I want to see Mariah do is a lifestyle change and to seek professional help. Build your voice from the ground back up again with a voice therapist and a vocal coach, those exercises really do work. Find out what you've been doing wrong and correct that technique. The whistle or the complete voice? (102,671) by Bill from the UK I'd rather she didn't lip anything if I'm honest. All I want is for her to sing a song live end to end like she was able to 1990-1996. No one would mind or be disappointed if she announced her upper register was no longer available going forward given her age. It is nothing more than a gimmick now as I've said previously, any studio notes are heavily engineered and she hasn't hit a live one in decades, so really, what is the point of them? As for surgery, there is the rumour that she had surgery after the Daydream tour and that is why her voice was never the same from 1997 onwards. We will never know the actual truth of the matter because Mariah refuses to acknowledge there is anything wrong, or that anything has changed. This leads to perhaps unfair speculation. She squandered her gift through drinking, she squandered her gift through drugs, she squandered her gift by not looking after her voice properly etc. It could be a medical issue, it could be she has a degenerative illness (which would explain why she can't move on stage unaided), it could be a whole host of reasons. Point is, until she does that candid to-camera confession and opens up, we won't ever know. I get lambasted on here by the Yass Queen Gang, but honestly, I love her too much. I would cry with relief and love and support her and champion her more than I ever have done previously if she only was brave enough to open her heart and let us in. I can only speak for myself, but I love her more than whistle notes and number one records. I love her for who she is and what she has brought to my life. All I ever want is for her to be happy, healthy, and loved. She has given me so much, and all I can ever give her back is my love. If only she'd let me. (102,670) by TheWind from England If it's true that Mariah has nodules on her vocals that have damaged her voice, but allow her to facilitate the whistle register, what would you rather? Mariah to get surgery and lose the whistle register, but return to an overall healthy voice, or maintain the whistle register and continue to work around the nodules? This is a purely speculative post, as I don't know that she has nodules etc, and I have no clue what's wrong with her voice. When You Believe is the only original song she has recorded with no writing credit on. Webmaster E. That's your rap name. I think the award is for the lyrics and melody. I don't think it was awarded for only the film version or they would've had the actresses sing it at the Oscars and not MC and Whitney. I think no matter what you do to a song musically, the lyric and melody credit always goes to the original songwriter and the producer that adds to or changes it still doesn't get writing credit, just whatever producer credit he's entitled to because he added to it. Legacy (102,607) by Bill from the UK I even question how good the whistle register is these days. She hasn't done a live whistle in maybe, what, 10 years? The worst thing is how it birthed a bunch of awful "singers" on YouTube who think by screeching and sticking a finger in their ear that they are able to effectively use that register. The finger-in-the-ear gimmick is just that, a gimmick. In live performances from 1990-1992, she only occasionally did it, and it was usually when she was pitchy (which makes sense). But then she started to dub and lip sync her performances from 1996ish, so now it's all theatrics to mask the fact she's obviously lip syncing them. The yaas queens also make those stupid videos on YouTube with a heading like "Mariah Carey Can't Sing" and then try to disprove it by showcasing lipped performances as apparently live, or flashing up a "G5" for a nano-second as she barks out a note. When Mariah retires/is no longer with us, those videos will be overshadowing performances like "If It's Over" and her perfect 1990-1995 run. As much as I think AIWFCIY is the best thing she's ever done, I also agree that she's more than just that. Will she become another Bing Crosby? I can't even think of a single song he's done other than "White Christmas", though he's probably released about 30 albums. I heard "Vision of Love" on the radio when I was driving the other day and almost mounted the curb in my state of disbelief. Firstly because the only song other than AIWFCIY to get played on UK mainstream radio is "Hero" and maybe "I'll Be There". But it was incredible to hear it live on the radio. It sounded beautiful as the radio adds that certain brightness and magic to songs. I don't think I've even answered your question, but there we go. Legacy (102,605) by Randy from USA One of the things that bother me with the newer fans, delusionals and yass queens is the over celebration of AIWFCIY. A few years ago the older Stans were on here arguing what MC's signature song was. We tentatively settled on Hero. But now it's clear what she's going to be known for if this yearly record keeps happening. I think that the noise around that song fades away some of the most amazing singer songwriter compositions ever recorded. Mariah Carey is more than some relic you drag out of the closet and dust off on November 1st. Another damaging thing that the newer fans, delusionals and yass queens celebrate is her whistle register. Yes it is lovely. But that register doesn't make a great singer. I remember in the promotion for Emotions she said she didn't use it more on the track because she didn't want it to become a gimmick. She laid off it quite a bit on Music Box and Daydream but when the voice changed around #1s it was on full display for Rainbow. I think it's a crutch used to prove she can still sing. But if you have lost your belting register, are you gonna whistle your next albums? I just worry that Mariah's career is in a bleak spot and people are shining spotlights on things that narrow her legacy to a whistling Christmas act. Thoughts? (Saturday 22 April 2023; 03:34)

Female singers (102,572) by BFF from United States I think each case is unique, and I don't think this is necessarily an issue of industry sexism. Britney Spears and her management chose for her to have an inappropriately sexualized image from the start of her career, and I believe that is the genesis of a lot of her issues. Britney could push herself harder on the choreography front because she didn't write/produce her own material and never sang live. I believe Mariah overworked herself due to her deep-seated insecurity around identity, the chaotic/dysfunctional nature of her childhood, and her decision to become romantically involved with her boss (Tommy). It definitely did not help when Nelson George called her a "white girl who can sing black" and when people started setting her against Whitney Houston. And let's be honest, Whitney and her fans wish that she had written and sang a song as great as "Vision of Love". Still grinds my gears that Whitney is seen as having more "credibility" when she didn't write or produce a damn word of her own material. Marrying Tommy was a massive mistake because it meant she had zero separation between her personal and professional life, a recipe for burnout. The bottom line is that all people in the entertainment business opted into this for their career and can walk away at any time if it's too much for them. With the loss of the ability to sing her songs well and fluidly like she did in prior years, the focus had to shift. So, musically the songs became less demanding vocally, the "I'm a songwriter first" narrative was cranked up to the max, and she became more concerned with her look than her voice. Mariah vs MC (102,399) by Jamie from UK Ok as a 90's fan of Mariah and a continued fan to this day, I've always struggled with Mariah and MC. Whilst I like them both I'm more swayed towards Mariah. I've always wondered what she thinks, as Mariah did she always want to break away and be MC, or now does she long to be Mariah again? I say this because she always says how controlled she was, yet now every opportunity she gets she shows pics etc of her earlier career. Watching her earlier videos she is so natural and composed something I don't think can be forced or mimicked. So I often wonder who is the the real Mariah/MC? Don't get me wrong I love both, but I often wonder what happened that made the drastic change, I don't believe it was all Tommy as he could have dressed her in all he liked, but like I said you can't mimic those natural early performances. I get people change, I've changed myself, but not so drastically like she has. I always wonder who the happiest one was. To me she looks more happy in the early Mariah days when she was more wholesome, but would love to hear your spin on things. This all came from watching ATYNAF from Proctors Theatre, which to me is one of her best performances. It's from her Jamaican concert a few years back, and yes, we all know she was influenced by something, and it was not Chardonnay, darlin'. The performance is a mess, but hell, Mariah was so at ease that evening that she hit high notes and had runs she hadn't done in years and haven't done since. I can admit that I have taken the same substance as Mariah that evening sometimes, aan it really eases you off, makes you feel comfortable, down to earth, high in confidence and really good about yourself. I have watched the video, and all I can say is, if that is what make our girl Mariah relax and hit those high notes and runs, we know she can make, well hell, she should really hit them joints every show, relax, and show them girls and boys how you really sing.
