Here we go again, with this Negative Nancy, spreading his gloom and doom, depression and confusion all around this message board. Sit down sometimes Randy and go through your own message archive and you will perceive how you come across – a broken "Right To Dream", "What happened to her voice in 1997" record.

Global Citizen performance (101,320)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
I just re-watched it on their YouTube page (in critic mode this time) and I must say I [loved] it, [genuinely]. That inversion of "Honey" and "Heartbreaker" was everything and seeing her pals Jadakiss and Styles P come out to support made me smile, they look good. I haven't been excited about a Mariah live performance in a minute and she did good. Her voice has improved so much, less airy and much more warm and fluid again, than say when she recorded in 2020. The annoying rasp is still there, but not as distracting either, and that "We Belong Together" climax was a "Pow" moment. I applaud Mariah and yes now, I am excited for her next album recording seeing as how drastic her voice has improved. I [look] forward to another "The Emancipation of Mimi" 2025, [bring it] Mariah. *fingers crossed*

I have no doubt, it is a Gospel record, which is always what I have wanted Mariah to do, with songs like "Vision of Love", "My Saving Grace" and "Fly Like a Bird", I would definitely be here for her own versions of Gospel classic covers and also more original Gospel songs. The Clark Sisters collaboration points in that direction.

Breakdown rediscovered (101,249)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
I liked this song, played it sometimes but never really got its vibe, maybe I was too young to understand grown folk issues and breakups. However, I have been playing the song non stop as I rediscovered it with fresh "grown ears" so to speak, haha and play it quite often now. It never was a song I gravitated towards until quite recently (2021). The [emotion] she sings with is so real, that desperation and frustration one feels, conveyed perfectly through the [ad-libs] towards the end of the song. Wow Mariah, thank you for this song.

Re: If Butterfly single was released (101,240) (101,248)
by Terna from Nigeria

"Butterfly", to me, does not come across as [single material], it is a very quality song, a cut above most of her [ballads] and if I'm being honest almost too good to be a single release, but I am glad she gave it a video treatment though. That song is really special and too personal for radio, the type deep album cut of a gem you discover on your own that would make the album worth the purchase, and let us also be real "Candle in the Wind" was not gonna be unseated from that space. The whole world mourned Lady Diana for months and honestly, the rest of that ugly year 1997.

It's the correct link, the video content just got upgraded but kept its original view count. The same was done with "We Belong Together" and "When You Believe", amongst others.

It was a let down to see the tracklist, but I have a feeling there's going to be more reveals as the season picks up. (The Ariana collaboration? There was a clip on Twitter.) I do like the Amorphous Remix though and finally the Letterman performance on audio.

Re: The Ballads compilation (101,150) (101,156)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
Not according to her definition of what a "ballad" is to her as a songwriter, and this is a Mariah Carey compilation after all. Recall the podcast that was released in promotion of the compilation? She spoke extensively on her own interpretation of what a ballad is and it is clear she strives for different "types" of ballads, not just the regular "middle of the road ones". Thus the appearances of cuts like "The Roof", "Dream lover", and "Thank God I found You (Make it last)".

Re: The Ballads compilation (101,130) (101,147)
by Terna from Nigeria

It's all a marketing strategy. These type of collections are not really for fans, but mainly as an introduction of the artist to non fans who are casual listeners. Through these compilations a "glimpse" of who she is as an artist and hints at her body of work is made available, without having to go through the whole discography. People gravitate towards certain types of music and genres more than others (Ballads, Mid-tempos, Up-tempos etc.). So for a casual non listening fan, there are always gonna be a variety of songs showcased. And for a genre crossing artist such as herself, she would want to be represented a certain kind of way with an equal balance of her Pop catalogue as well as the R&B and the Hip-hop all of which she has been very successful at - thus the weird tracklistings all the time, it's all marketing, because at the end of the day it's about selling records and making money.

Re: Endless Love (101,114) (101,120)
by Terna from Nigeria

I always said this as well, that live performance of "Endless Love" is so much better than the actual recording, I'm guessing because there's also engagement between the two and the crowd. And let's not forget that intro by Luther, makes me smile every time. Mariah's vocal prime was very short - where I don't sense any issues with her voice and it is operating at its full potential and that's from 1990 to 1994. By "Daydream" you can already tell there was a problem in her mid–register with the sudden loss of the "heft" in her voice.

This is similar to the tracklistings I saw floating around on twitter, and is going to be special for her true Lambs if indeed it is true. Honestly, I could take this as "Butterfly 2.0" and don't get me started, finally hearing her own versions of "Last Chance", "All cried out" and "Head Over Heels". I became a fan in the "Butterfly" era so this is a big deal for me.

Re: New Mariah feat. Ariana Grande out 9/2 (101,063) (101,073)
by Terna from Nigeria

I think it is because there's an audio clip, I also saw a compilation record track listing which basically had the songs she wrote during the "Butterfly" [era] but also [including] her own demos for the Allure songs, slated for September 16th this year. We all know by now that Mariah has been very silent for a long time now and that's indicative she's hard at work on a project but trying hard not to divulge any details or end up under pressure to put out something just because, and I think this is the best way to have it.

Vocal influences (101,072)
by Terna from Nigeria

This just might be one of Mariah's favorite songs, I can hear the influence on her singing style. Exaggerated soft falsetto verses and big voiced choruses. Ugh how time flies, I still remember when I heard this song for the first time.

Re: That Girl - Mariah (101,035) (101,040)

"There were so many amazing albums and songs up against each other that year." And "Daydream" was the biggest of them all by a wide Margin. You don't think it was personal. How about the fact 10 years later on that same Grammy show none of her awards and acceptance speeches were televised on the main show. Coincidence?

That Girl - Mariah (101,028)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
Lauryn Hill once said the music industry and the machine that it is, made something she used to love turn into something she now loathes and hates - speaking on the creative freedom artists enjoy before the fame monster and industry rules stifles them. I always thought Mariah has gone through this as well, and the "Daydream" era was that turning point for her. Stumbling upon this, words are lacked. I was really young when that Grammy event happened, but now being grown up I fully understand what the intent was. This kind of experience changes someone permanently, negatively. And without a doubt in my mind, it changed her. Especially for someone who has struggled with biracial issues, insecure feelings and not ever fitting in, how do you pick yourself up and keep moving?. You can imagine the industry trying to make you a laughing stock at the Zenith of your career. Smh. They really do build you up to tear you down don't they?. By the time I became a Mariah fan, I could sense she already had this wall built up and persona like you could tell was a defense mechanism, always on "guard" so to speak (especially when being interviewed), and not being herself. So very different from the Mariah one sees in the "This is Mariah" Proctor's theatre DVD. In hind sight bowing out of the Pop music scene (yeah I consider "Daydream" a Pop record) was the best thing she ever did for herself and her career.

Re: Article: Mariah Carey wants to trademark "Queen of Christmas" (100,986) (101,011)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |

Technically she already owns that title (just check social media during that season) and it's clear to see exactly why, AIWFC does what no other Christmas song does, every year and that is being the most downloaded, streamed and played song, all season, every year without fail. Give her the title already, who better to carry it than Mariah Carey? Moments like this just further solidify that argument.

Re: Mariah / Whitney singing each other's songs (100,896) (100,899)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |

There's a clip with Whitney singing a line from "Vision of Love" and I always wanted to hear more. Funny enough she sings it in the original key, impromptu. They have two different styles of singing and different voice types. Whitney always sang in her comfortable range for the most part, but Mariah always experimented a lot and sings more outside her range. It would've been truly awesome to experience them both cover each other. The closest we have of them singing the same song is "O Holy Night". Whitney : "Vision of Love", "Fly Like a Bird" and "Love Takes Time". Mariah: "For the Love of You", "You Give Good Love", "Fine" (total bop), "How will I know".

Lol. Diane warren has always been so outspoken and real. I went through the credits for the Kelis song that caused so much drama and there were 16 people credited and I was like "Is this even possible?" I thought that was overkill, but 26? Haha. Now that's just messy. I haven't listened to the new record and I don't even intend to. Never really connected with Beyonce nor her music at all.

Um, just no. I speak on the behalf of the Lambily when I say honestly, absolutely no one is gonna be here for any rerecording of that album "Butterfly" whatsoever and Mariah should not make that mistake and think she'll get any support from hardcore fans like me on that issue. Just leave that album alone. Rerecord "Daydream". Instead. Lol. However, unreleased material from that time period with images from the photoshoot we haven't seen. Oh boy. We're all here for that.

Re: What sank Charmbracelet? (100,807) (100,813)

The album had fillers, lots of them, lacked tangible single [material] except for "Through The Rain" (which of course was a good start and was needed as she addressed the breakdown indirectly) and wasn't cohesive. Then those hideous vocals. Where was her chest voice? Ugh. Simply put "Charmbracelet" was [bland] and [boring] and quite honestly, my least favorite album. Smh. Such hard times to be a Mariah Carey [fan] 2002-2004. She lost half her [fan] base during this time. I was so disappointed in the record especially her singing and then as if to taunt Mariah fans, Celine's "One Heart" was released around the same time, and was everything "Charmbracelet" wasn't and that's putting it lightly. Lol.

You call those whistle notes subtle? That was pure fire. I've been playing this song ever so frequently of late and yes Mariah did her thing and I always felt the line she sang, she was the best person to sing it. "You will know that you're good if you trust in the good, through whatever" chills every time. The highlight of 2008 in music for me was this song.

Hey, what were not gonna do here is disrespect Walter Afanasieff. It's just not going to happen. Walter was already an established pianist and music producer by the time Mariah Carey came along. You better check that man's body of work, before you come on here to display your ignorance. Yes we love Mariah, but we don't have to bring others down in order for her to shine, she does that already without effort. This doesn't mean people she has worked with are any less credible or legit in their own endeavors. Walter and Mariah had magic not just chemistry and the songs they created from scratch speak volumes. Her best songs are the songs she wrote with him, there's no denying that, and if you take away all those songs, she will have less than half the career she has now. Yes, he didn't really recreate that magic with other artists after they fell out, but that also applies to her also. Her biggest "cash cow" song so to speak - a gift that keeps on giving is "All I Want For Christmas is You" and that's co-written and produced with Walter. The man is a genius.
