The music (109,468)
by Edward from USA

Guys, it's 2025, enjoy the music. Chart positions don't define greatness anymore. Mariah had an unmatched prime, let's celebrate that. We're blessed to have experienced "The Voice" at its glory, and that's something truly special. Mariah's a one in a lifetime experience.
I don't know about y'all, but I feel lucky to have experienced her greatness. Most artists on the charts aren't even close to her level. Maybe it's the wine talking but I'm at peace with everything she's given us. It's been an incredible ride.
Remember that no matter how great, nobody stays at the top forever.

35 years in the game (109,434)
by Edward from USA

Bobby A, unfortunately, Mariah has her age working against her in today's music scene. For something to really take off as per some people's expectations here, she would have to pull a "Believe" moment like Cher did. I personally like and appreciate what we've gotten so far, but "TD" is not that moment.
With short attention spans these days and everything being so instantly accessible, a song has to hit right away to make an impact. It's a different game now.
Being a legacy artist doesn't help much either. Radio rarely supports older artists, a song from them would have to be twice as great as the next one. There's no real formula for a hit, even great music can flop. At the end of the day, it all depends on whether the general public connects with it, especially the younger crowd who drive most of the streaming. The music needs to feel current and cool to them.
I've said it before, Mariah helped so many people when she was on top. It's time for a big name to return the favor and boost one of her projects. She deserves it.

35 years in the game (109,432)

I am sure MC and L.A. Reid have listened to what she has sequenced so far and he probably has suggested that MC return back to the studio and record some more songs. What if TD was a test single to guage how listeners would react. I give their reaction a 7, but a 10 is needed to launch MC16. I found it odd that we didn't find out the album title and release date on June 6th if she was sequencing the album.

I see some of you are obsessing over chart positions. Remember that Gamma doesn't have a magic wand to make things happen. They can do their part, but remember that "Caution" was released seven years ago. It's not like she's been gaining tons of new fans since then.
Streaming is an indication of where things are going. The video for TD has been out for seven days and it is sitting at barely 1.7M views. The blaming game most of us like to play when things are not going as expected with Mariah is kind of getting tired now.
At this point, the only way TD gets a boost is if they drop a hot remix with a current artist. As I have stated, I like TD and I'm just hoping the album delivers something solid overall. But let's not pretend this is another "It's Like That".
Mariah's been in the game for 35 years, so I don't have unrealistic expectations. If she wants a real hit, she's gonna have to actually sing and come with something stronger. With that being said, I'm totally fine with what she's given us so far, song and video included.

Possible MC16 track (109,405)
by Edward from USA

These days, it's pretty easy to keep songs and albums from leaking since everything drops on streaming first anyway. So if something shows up early online, chances are they wanted it to.

I can't view it for some reason but if it's that TikTok account which "leaked" two "demos" one being velvet smoke or something and the other a song similar to "bitch I'm Mariah" I hated both. Mariah would never do those lyrics and it was too shouty. I think they're keeping tight leash on the material and won't allow leaks.

Capital's Summer Ball (109,391)

One step at a time, don't push it. Mariah basically ran a marathon just walking that stage. She finally diversified the dance crew, even got herself a white guy and a couple of black hotties in the mix. Her midsection wasn't under siege for once, just squeezed into a corset that didn't make her look like she was battling demons. And let's not overlook the miracle: for the first time in years, she didn't look like she was squinting at a teleprompter or searching for her soul on the monitor. And now you expecting her to sing too? Ave María Purísima.

I don't think it's about confidence or the lack of it. Confidence alone doesn't magically produce a voice that's no longer there. At this point, it's clear she's not putting herself through that anymore. "The Voice" has always been the centerpiece, but as it's changed, her approach should too. I actually respect that she's working with whatever she has left, no more gimmicks, no wall of background vocals, no smoke and mirrors. Just as is. I think she should keep it simple and lean into the artistry that's still there. Like I said before, chart positions aren't the point anymore. What matters is the music. And right now, we've got a fresh single and a solid video, and that's good enough for me.

Capital's Summer Ball (109,353)
by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway

I just watched the Summer Ball, and I actually liked it a lot. Almost everything is prerecorded, but it seems like it's her current voice, it's much deeper, she can't belt, but a few high notes here and there. And funny thing is, she actually sang a few notes and frases live, and those live notes, are actually pretty good. I wish she could have the confidence to actually sing, she has to break the barrier soon.
She doesn't care if it looks like she is lip synching or not, but she does it a tad bit more believable than in China. She doesn't move her muscles in her face, but at this point I'm affraid it has with botox to do, it's quite strange how emotionless her face has become.
She moves a bit more freely, and I actually think her outfit looked modern, almost a bit of a image change from the gowns and the big hair. She was not tacky, it fitted her well, she seemed young, but her own age at the same time, and not desperate to be sexy.
I'm quite pleased with the performance.

Mariah left me gagged and on the bathroom floor with her performance. When I saw the stage it had this very long ramp that leads to a centre stage and I was like no way is Mariah walking that well I was damn wrong. First of all I'm so very glad she didn't wear a gown and instead wore a shorter romper dress she looked so pretty and youthful and she wore some sensible shoes. When I tell you I was hyperventilating when Mariah started walking the ramp and not just walk she walked without any help I was screeching because it's so rare nowadays. Not only did she walk, she interacted with the audience, bent down to talk to a little girl, then again to pick up a lamb toy someone threw on stage. She also looked like she wanted to sprint across the stage during the WBT ending but then thought she shouldn't. Mic was on, she sounded great. I also choked when she said during the start of WBT that it was a song of the decade and that she doesn't say that a lot but "tonight I will", I was like yasss queen own your shit.

Mariah's been over that for a long time now. We've seen her thrive and find happiness after all of that. The horrible truth came out and she was vindicated. She's delivered some of her best work post Tommy, she's spoken her truth in her memoir, and poured it all into her music. There's really nothing left to say.
Mariah's not just anyone. She's had access to the best care and support. Judging by how things went after TEOM, it's safe to say she moved on. I highly doubt 76-year-old Tommy is anywhere near her thoughts at this point.
Now, if she were revealing something new, I'd understand. But rehashing the same story she's told a thousand times is tired, kind of petty to be honest. At this point, if she's said everything that needed to be said, she should take her own advice and "Shake It Off".

I agree. Mariah's already given us some iconic songs that dealt with her trauma from that marriage, "Side Effects" being the most powerful and raw in my opinion. At this point, still throwing shade at Tommy feels unnecessary. She already went through her metamorphosis with "Butterfly", and found a renewed IDGAF freedom with TEOM.
Lyrics that hint at Tanaka or Nick make more sense, they reflect more recent chapters in her life. But revisiting Tommy, decades later, feels a bit tired. She's 56, he's 76, it's time to "Shake It Off".
Or who knows, maybe she's just waiting for Tommy to clock out permanently so she can drop a song called "Dirty Coffin", reminiscing about how "important" his presence was in launching her career. Poetic closure, right?

Type Dangerous (109,123)
by Edward from USA

The beat is sick: fresh, modern, and definitely a grower. A little auto tune here and there, but she's earned the right to that, and it actually works in this context. I appreciate the fact that there are no whistle notes or any attempt at vocal gymnastics, it lets the vibe breathe. With the right feature, this could easily turn into a hit.
I think it feels a bit too short though, just when it starts pulling you in, it ends a little too abruptly, like, we just got here, are we leaving already? Still, A+ for trying something new, A+ for her pen game and A for sounding smooth and confident with her current voice. It's a smart move in the right direction.

I really hope Mariah pushes the creative envelope this time, maybe something super groundbreaking, like her in a bathtub full of roses, looking at the ceiling while, you guessed it, touching herself. Or maybe she'll really surprise us and be in the back of a limo wearing bridal lingerie, also touching herself. You know, something fresh and never before seen like that.

MC16 (109,012)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
Just a suggestion: when MC16 drops, try to focus on enjoying the music instead of worrying about #1's or chart positions. That way, you're not setting yourself up to be disappointed.
Mariah's already done it all, she's a legend, and legends don't have anything to prove. The music scene isn't what it used to be, and chart success doesn't always reflect how good a song actually is. This new album might not have a massive hit, but that doesn't mean it won't have songs with hit potential. Some of her best work has never been on the radio. So let's just enjoy it for what it is.
I see MC16 as an unexpected gift. Whether or not it tops the charts, we're lucky to be getting new music from her. Let's enjoy the ride.

Some people seriously need to get off their high horse. Bill is an appreciated member of this board. When he stepped away for a while, a lot of us genuinely missed him.
A bunch of us have been here for over a decade. We've supported Mariah through her ups and downs, bought the music, defended her when it counted, and yes, we've also kept it real when needed. We've seen plenty of people come and go, showing up with loud opinions and disappearing just as fast. Some may not like what Bill said, but no one here gets to question his or anyone else's place fandom.
If for some of you the idea of being a fan means clapping for everything and pretending everything's perfect all the time, that's not what this board is about. And if hearing a different opinion is too much for you, you might want to grab a helmet, it's 2025.
I've said it before: one of the reasons this board has lasted over 20 years is because it's always allowed for different opinions. Not just blind praise, but real talk too. That's what keeps it interesting. Every time this place turns into an echo chamber, it just dies out.
And yeah, sometimes we get frustrated and show a little tough love. But that's only because we know what Mariah is capable of. That doesn't mean we don't love her or support her any less.
I actually appreciate reading different opinions, even ones I don't agree with. That back and forth is what makes this board work. It's not a fan club where everyone's forced to say the same thing.
Bill, you've been part of this board for years, and most of us really value what you bring. Don't even think about disappearing.

Your level of "yass queen" delusion is impressive, congrats. Mariah is definitely the better overall artist, but neither she nor Celine could touch Whitney when it comes to pure vocal power and resonance. So, before you and your other account keep hyping each other up in your little echo chamber, take several seats. If you're going to reply to a certain post, at least make some sense.

Music Box vs Daydream (108,945)
by Lambi from USA

In Asia, during a grand finale of a singing contest, virtually nobody uses any song from Mariah Carey, Music Box or Merry Christmas. Like when others are singing Whitney's "I Will Always Love You" or Celine's "Power Of Love". The lambily contestants would will their artillery with "Through The Rain", "Can't Take That Away", "Forever", "Never Too Far", "Butterfly" or "My All" and majority of the time, the lambs would take home the grand prize. Probably because Mariah just wrote it with higher difficulty level. Those are her best vocal performances. Once again, the market of singers have spoken, you're objectively wrong. Whitney is also the one that has to level up and match Mariah by the way, not the other way around.
