About Bill from the UK: I love Mariah more than you do.

London Daydream Tour Attendee.

Re: Songs that most hate but I happen to love (55,446) by Bill from the UK
I know To The Floor doesn't get much praise here. It's actually my most favourite song from Emancipation. It sounds so slick and the minimal production makes it sound so open and free. It really is the peak of the second half of the album in my opinion.

1 Mariah song (55,434) by Bill from the UK
Well this is nigh on impossible for me to answer. I've been sitting here going through her catalogue thinking about which one song I would choose. So many come to my mind, but I think it would be All I Want For Christmas Is You. Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without it. It has so many great memories for me, everyone across the globe loves it, it has one of her most committed and dynamic vocal performances ever, and it will probably be the one song of hers that people will remember her for, long after her and our time in this world is over.

Never Forget You / Babyface (55,405) by Bill from the UK
I have been listening to Music Box lately, specifically Never Forget You. What a gem of a track this is. I've never understood why MC and Babyface have not worked together more than the handful of times they have. Each collaboration has been magic. Melt Away, When You Believe, Every Time I Close My Eyes. Beautiful, elegant, classy numbers and real jewels in Mariah's crown. Never Forget You is just so mesmeric. The silky, syrupy production, those glorious tones that Mariah and Babyface's vocals make on the chorus together, the sad and heart felt message, and of course those incomparable runs and ad-libs Mariah goes into at the bridge's end and beyond. It's a song that I never want to end and a real highlight of the album. I hope they work together again soon.

SC and LC (55,366) by Bill from the UK
SC, she's mixed Someday up with the song "I Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg" by TLC. They go great together. LC, thank you for sharing that TGIFY performance, it was incredible.

Just a side note to say I appreciate the Majora's Mask avatar. Huge fan of the franchise but personally more a Link To The Past man myself. Anyway, back to arguing about James and Nick.

Haha, it is to me (exclamation mark). I remember I almost ejected the CD and threw the whole album out after that song but thankfully "The One" and every subsequent song from Charmbracelet managed to redeem it for me. I still can't understand how the same mind that composed "Vision of Love", "All I Want for Christmas Is You", "Fantasy" and "Vanishing" also came up with "Boy (I Need You)". When "The One" was dropped as a single and replaced with "Boy", the whole album wept. I think Charmbracelet is still angry with Mariah over it haha.

Flabbergasted that nobody has mentioned the monstrosity that is "Boy (I Need You)".

The Wind (55,198) by Bill from the UK
I've never heard that it was a planned single. I did read that the fourth single from Emotions was due to be And You Don't Remember, but the idea was shelved after I'll Be There and the Unplugged concert took off. But what do I know? Let's get back to talking about Ariana.

Nikki (55,141) by Bill from the UK
I think the first planned single from Emotions was in fact "You're So Cold", at least according to Mariah's official biography and numerous other sources. You are correct though in that the album was originally titled The Wind, which I think would have been cool as Mariah was named after the song "They Call the Wind Mariah". Not sure why Emotions was picked as the album title, perhaps after the success of the song, or indeed because the themes of the songs on the album themselves cover a range of emotions across their subject matter. Love, gladness, sadness, faith, anger, mourning etc.

B (55,134) by Bill from the UK
Actually, the line "and I dream the impossible dream when you and I are alone" from Money is more likely to be a reference to the very well known song "The Impossible Dream" made famous by Andy Williams. Lyrically, it doesn't work in the same context for it to be a reference to the song "The Impossible" from Memoirs, and Mariah has never said it is a reference to that song, so I'm not sure where you got that from. "The Impossible Dream" is a very uplifting song about fighting for what you believe in, and given the context of Money being about love being stronger than material items, it makes more sense that's she is singing about her dreaming that her and Nick are together fighting for what they believe in and fighting together against their enemies etc.

Beautiful music (55,083) by Bill from the UK
So there I was driving along listening to MC on my iPod, which plugs into my car stereo. All of a sudden I have to do an emergency stop, and the iPod lead connecting it to the stereo loosened slightly. MC's vocals then disappear and I'm left with just the instrumentals and background vocals to the songs. I'm playing the Daydream album and, my God, it was an experience. There were harmonies and background vocals I never even realised until that moment. UTS, I Am Free, ABMB, Melt Away all have so, so much going on in the background it was unbelievable. And for those songs with no backing vocals, I never noticed how beautiful the music was. The strings in the final chorus of When I Saw You are overwhelming as they crescendo up. I then managed to listen to the Emotions album as well. The backing vocals were astonishing on And You Don't Remember and You're So Cold, and did you know that The Wind has wind softly blowing throughout and not just the beginning and end? Also, the bass and drums didn't come through on the Emotions album, I never knew what a talent David Cole was at the piano until it was brought into the foreground like that. Unfortunately it then went back to normal afterwards but what an experience.

We still need each other when we stumble and fall (55,053) by Bill from the UK
How apt. I think though everybody is over analysing this picture. She stumbled, and got caught by the person who was employed to do just that. End of. Move on.

Just have to say that MC looks incredible on her latest Instagram picture with Brett and James. How this woman has insecurities is beyond me. To my eyes she is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.

Father's Day (54,787) by Bill from the UK
I was elated to see Mariah wish Nick a Happy Father's Day from the children. It must have been hard on him not having them around for his day, but the fact that Mariah had the children make pictures for him and focus on him for the day hopefully shows all those who put her in the "difficult diva" category that she is human, a mother, kind hearted, and carries herself with grace and class.

Nick (54,759) by Bill from the UK
Nick I agree, I thought that when I saw the pictures that she looked great. She always looks stunning but for me when she wears vibrant colours they just seem to accentuate her beauty all the more.

Every Time I Close My Eyes (54,728) by Bill from the UK
Yep I agree, this is a great song. I do believe Mariah's involvement was a "returning the favour" gesture. I'm sure either Babyface or MC said something about that once. Her background vocals are just impeccable. She completely makes that song what it is and just elevates it up a level. I also agree that R&B in the 90s was just untouchable. Those of us around back then didn't know how good we had it.

Stacey (54,717) by Bill from the UK
In no particular order. Vocals:
1. O Holy Night
2. Jesus Oh What a Wonderful Child
3. And You Don't Remember
4. All In Your Mind
5. If It's Over (Grammy's)
Lyrics:
1. The Roof
2. Breakdown
3. Petals
4. Do You Think of Me
5. The Wind
Really tough to narrow it down and I'm sure my list will change if I think about it too long.

Well now MC is back at Sony, it could well happen that they pair up again. I'm not sure if he is still under contract there these days or if he's moved on. Has anyone been keeping tabs on him? Although, as Mariah said, "when I break I break", so I'm not holding my breath. I'd be more interested to see what her and Ben Margulies would come up with all these years later. I'd love for MC to forget all the glamour and whatever goes with it, head back to the woodshop with Ben, and just get into the moment and make music the old fashioned way.

Walter Afanasieff opens up the Music Box again (54,692) by Bill from the UK
I found this really interesting article from 2011. Walter talks about how the Music Box album came together. He mentions his involvement in her debut, their collaborations on Emotions, and goes into some great detail about Dreamlover, Hero and Just to Hold You Once Again as well as how he regretted that Everything Fades Away didn't make it onto the US edition.

Make It Look Good (54,691) by Bill from the UK
QHM, thank you for posting the link to the extended MILG. That song is by far and away the best thing she's written in the last ten years and when I was on my first play through of MIAM, I had to stop and replay that song about twenty times before I could move on to the rest of the album. It just struck a chord with me and Stevie's celestial harmonica and the O Jay's sample just worked so well with her voice. It's so well written lyrically too, it would have been perfect to follow Beautiful if it weren't for the whole arm drama. One thing I'm unhappy about with the song is that it is over all too quickly, so this beautiful prolonged into is brilliant. I remember the original TAOLG track list had this as the opening track. With that intro it would have really worked as a great beginning to the album.

I think your list is spot on. I would maybe add The Wind to the list, as it is so atmospheric and moving. It really is a stunning song and I wish Mariah would explore that light jazz style some more. It was such a powerful closing mediation to what remains one of her best albums.

Wow, you've excelled yourself. Three slams in a row, well done. Cheers, toast, bravo, to you. You're the over-named person of the hour. I'mma have to send you some flowers. But Freddy Krueger? Seriously? Grow up.

Standards (54,638) by Bill from the UK
Standards are old timeless songs which countless artists have covered over the years. They were usually written in the 1920s or 30s, but some newer songs have fallen into the category due to their popularity. Songs like Stormy Weather, Star Dust, Moonlight Serenade, Embraceable You etc. are considered standards. I think MC would do a good job because I love the track The Wind from the Emotions album, and that has a similar mellow, low key, jazzy vibe which most standards have.
