Deep down inside you're so cold (47,158)

I really hope that Mariah never reads any of these messages, because if she did, it would be heart breaking. She does so much for her fans, and for her to read some of these comments would be devastating for her. It's like some people think she is a robot, programmed to produce #1 records and hit high notes. If that doesn't happen, then bad, bad robot. Mariah is a person, a beautiful person who has given every single one of us on this board joy over her 24 years of singing. She is going through a divorce. The woman who said after her first marriage ended that she'd never marry again, and never bring children into the world, married again and had children because she found her soul mate. And now that's ended. Can you imagine how distraught she must be, that her children are left to be brought up just as she had been? Yet here she is, touring and singing live to please her fans, and yet you sit here and have the gall to criticise and tear down this poor woman? Honestly, where are your hearts and where is your compassion? She's turned to "her saving grace" during an extremely difficult time in her life. The one thing that's always pulled her through tough times since she was a little girl, and here you all are, ripping her to pieces. Poor Mariah. I love her. I always have, and always will. She is more to me than someone to just churn out hits and reach high notes. To others here, maybe not. I will always love and support her, and I'm proud to.

Lee / Don't Explain (47,114)

Thank you for sharing that video Lee. I thought that was a great performance and an excellent song choice. I've longer for Mariah to do a jazz number ever since hearing The Wind. It just suits the softer side of her voice and the arrangements can let her sing freely when she wants to. Really enjoyed the song, thanks again for sharing it.

Setlist (47,097)
by Bill from the UK

The setlist is great, who would have thought The Roof and I'm That Chick would make an appearance. So pleased to see Babydoll there as well. My only disappointment is that Make It Look Good didn't show up, but I'm crossing my fingers that she'll change it up and perform it at least once.

The concert (47,095)
by Bill from the UK

I've listened to the clips on Instagram and some YouTube videos, and I would hardly call the performances "atrocious" as somebody put. Hero, We Belong Together, and #Beautiful all sounded great. She honestly cannot win with some of you. She lips the difficult parts of her songs, and you crucify her. She sings the difficult parts live, and you crucify her.

Norman / live album (47,082)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Hi Norman. I agree, I also don't think Mariah would do another Unplugged album. I honestly don't think it can be matched (but then I had my reservations about MCIIY, but loved that album as much as the original, lol). I had a great bootleg of her Tokyo concert from 1996 called Out In Japan which was professional quality (near enough) and a great keepsake from one of her best tours, so I'd love something similar, especially if Mariah is debuting new songs each night like she hinted at. I love that microphone, it's so Mariah lol.

Great post and welcome to the board. Unplugged is my favourite album of Mariah's, because I just love her live voice so, so much. I think your idea of a live album to promote the tour and support it is brilliant, I'd love for that to happen.

Angelo from Italy / Emotions (46,868)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Hi Angelo. That version of Emotions was on a European Maxi CD with some other club mixes. It is item 0204 in this website's discography and I have this CD in my collection. Remixes usually have either edited out or unused vocals from different takes. Mariah said that the Def Club Mix of Dreamlover was the first remix she ever re-sang, so from that we can deduce that the "you got me feeling" refrain was indeed either edited out of the master version or was from a different, unused take.

When I get home from work tonight I will listen to this album and transport "back in time" to when a 15 year old me first listened to this album. I was rendered speechless by its beauty, elegance and maturity - and still am to this day. A true pinnacle of her glorious career.

Thanks for that, listening to it now it is pretty clear lol. I did scratch my head wondering why she was mentioned a president from the early 60s in a homage to the 80s haha.

Buzzfeed article (46,771)
by Bill from the UK

That was a great article, but I'm upset Glitter didn't get a mention. To me that entire album is underrated, bit especially songs like Lead The Way, If We, Twister and Reflections. Nearly passed out when I saw Boy described as a fan favourite lol. One thing - on the description of Dedicated, it quotes the lyrics as "Eric B was president", I thought she sang "Kennedy was president", am I wrong?

Miss You Most (At Christmas Time) (46,764)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I lost somebody dear a few years ago. This song is so poignant and beautiful and special to me now. It really is a sincere, heartfelt, hidden gem. How a woman so young could produce such heartbreaking lyrics just shows how she has always been a talent beyond her years. And her vocals are spell binding. All of Mariah's own Christmas music is special but for her to recognise so young that Christmas is, for many, a time to reflect, reminisce and remember loved ones that we so desperately miss, makes me realise what a fantastic song writer she is. I get a lump in my throat every time I play this gorgeous song.

Darryle/Martin (46,756)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
The Wind is a truly beautiful song. It's long been a favourite of mine and I would love to see Mariah venture into that soft jazz territory again sometime in the future. Martin, what a great idea. I remember I cried when it didn't make it to Christmas #1 here (I was about 10 which is too old for a boy to cry but I was hooked on Mariah by then and absolutely loved the song like everybody else in the world does now). You should make a facebook campaign and tweet the link to Mariah, she might retweet to all her followers. It pains me that her only #1s here are songs she didn't write. AIWFCIY is really one of her best and as you said deserves to be #1 on this special anniversary.

May / song speculations (46,729)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I agree May. I enjoy reading everybody's thoughts about the song meanings. My favourite posts are when people bring their theories around tracks, new and old alike, and also when people share why a song is special to them and what it means to them and how we interpret them. I always go and listen to that song after having read their post and often I experience it in another way. An old friend of mine thought that Vanishing was about her dad and how she couldn't remember him after being absent from her life for so long. He also thought Love Takes Time was about her relationship with Alison which for me added a whole new spin on both records.

May / Thirsty (46,700)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Be that as it may, we're still both speculating, and I doubt Mariah will ever say who the subject matter is. Like Carly Simon's You're So Vain. I honestly can't see how Nick would brag on a song that slams him, he's an intelligent guy despite how he presents himself. I don't think Mariah would take such a low blow as to do a diss song about her husband. It's not her nature. Every post-divorce Tommy song has been dignified and respectful. The fun shade tracks are usually reserved for those losers she encountered along the way, and in spite of everything, I honestly doubt she'd put the father of her children in that category. Can you imagine Mariah putting herself in the situation where she has to tell a grown up Roc and Roe that Thirsty was about their dad? Highly doubt it. Camouflage on the other hand, and even Faded, are honest accounts of a woman in love in a state of desperation, and there's no shame in her sharing how heartbroken she is with her children through an honest, dignified song.

Darryle (46,689)
by Bill from the UK

|
Darryle, that was a brilliant description of Butterfly, you summed it up so well. Are you a writer? You have a great way with words. As for Everything Fades Away - wow, what a song. One of the best compositions she has ever done in my opinion. To me, being in the UK, it was on the "standard edition", and looking at this site's discography, it was on more versions of the album than it wasn't, if that makes sense. So rather than a bonus track, it's a minus track for the poor US fans lol. But they got it on the Hero single I think.

Thirsty (46,687)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I never thought this was about Nick. Faded and Camouflage yes, but not Thirsty. When that was written they were, for all we know, still happy, and I doubt she would slam her husband and father of her children in such a way. An ex she doesn't give two hoots about, yes, but not Nick. She has way more class than that. Nick also said it was his favourite song, plus he's never "changed his name" like the lyrics suggest.

Ariana "Too Close" (46,670)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Out of curiosity I listened to that song after your post QHM. The only similarity is the line "I've been thinking about you", which is the same melodically as Mariah's song, though the rest of the track was completely unlike our old Music Box fave. It could have just been a melodic "nod" to another song out of respect, like Mariah did on WBT. I've avoided Ariana, like I do most new artists, so it was interesting to hear the "new Mariah" if you will. Maybe my hearing is wearing out in my old age, but I couldn't understand a single word that girl said. Her enunciation and diction is actually terrible. She delivers in a pleasant tone though, so I get why she has a lot of fans.

I Still Believe (46,526)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I'm glad ISB is receiving so much love, it is a beautiful song. QHM, I also like the fact it isn't perfect (technically speaking) and was given a rather gritty delivery, it made her performance very emotive. I read at the time that #1's was going to just be a collection of her number one singles and nothing else, so she rushed to record Sweetheart, ISB and DYKWYGT, which is why they all sound slightly tired. God love Mariah not wishing to short change her fans.

Gilbert / Close My Eyes (46,453)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Hi Gilbert, you're welcome. It's nice to read posts like yours, especially between all the talk about Mariah's current situation. I know fans want to talk about it to each other but it really upsets me. I just watched Close My Eyes on Rosie following your post. I haven't seen that in a while and I forgot how good it was. Interesting that she changed the word "dying" to "fading". I also love her look during this period. Bring back the earth tone make up and honey coloured hair, it is beautiful. Another favourite of mine is Emotions from the Rotterdam concert during the Daydream tour. There's a fan video of it on YouTube. It isn't the highest quality but it is fantastic, and during the song's closing bars she trills differently in the upper register to how she usually does. She also oozes confidence and dominates the stage. A great show.

I love anything Mariah sings live, especially when she changes it up. For me though, the Unplugged album just trumps all their studio counterparts (except maybe Vision Of Love). This is why it is my most beloved and favourite and cherished record she has ever put out. Her voice, and the acoustic instruments make it seem as if she is right there in your living room. Her voice is of course flawless and the up tempos like Someday and Make It Happen have such vibrancy and energy when compared to the originals. I do also equally love the Here Is Mariah version of Someday though and can't choose between the two.

You're not alone, I often go back to old songs. There are so many gems hidden away on her albums, and If It's Over is certainly one of them. I love the Emotions album, and am often surprised fans don't rate it that highly as it's so mature, varied, atmospheric and melodic. A beautiful record and one which really shows off just how astonishing her vocals can be.
