Without You (39,153)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I agree that Without You remains her best cover, closely followed by I'll Be There. Without You was flawless, and it introduced her to a lot of us Europeans. As for the fans who said they don't like To the Floor, lol, that is my favourite song from TEOM. Yes, I even rank it above We Belong Together. Don't shoot me.

Bad songs (39,129)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Lol, the songs people are listing are some of my favourites and I am sitting here with my mouth agape at some. To me, Last Kiss was the best thing on E=MC2. Equally, Emotions is one of her better albums in my opinion, and I love every track, particularly the lesser heard songs like And You Don't Remember, Til The End Of Time, The Wind etc. I agree that Everything Fades Away is one of the best things she ever wrote, so atmospheric, moody, chilling and spooky. As for album covers, Memoirs and Rainbow were both horrific, Glitter seemed too photoshopped and manufactured. I don't think the debut album looks like her. I think her mouth is the wrong shape, and wish the cover had been the Vision Of Love "S figure" with her holding the mic used on the back. I love the covers for Music Box, Emotions, Merry Christmas and Daydream. I also dislike her fake extended ankles on #1's. It looks stupid when you compare her legs to the Fantasy cover.

Bad songs on good albums (39,120)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Do you all have any songs on albums you like which you skip? There are only a few I don't listen to. They are: 1. Did I Do That from Rainbow 2. Boy (I Need You) from Charmbracelet 3. Makin' It Last All Night from TEOM I would actually go so far as to say number 3 above is one of the worst songs I have ever heard.

Debut album (39,102)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I've been listening to Mariah's debut album so much recently. I don't know why, but I always overlook this album. Her vocals are fantastic, and I think the best they have ever been. So pure, full and clear. Vision Of Love, as we all know, is one of the best songs she has ever written. What an entry into the industry. But other classics like Someday, Love Takes Time, Vanishing. And the whole "b side" of the record has so many hidden gems. Sent From Up Above, All In Your Mind, and even Prisoner and its rap. A wonderful record from start to finish. I wonder if Mariah will ever work with Ben Margulies again. They wrote beautiful songs together. See you later.

Another Daydream (39,051)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I had a dream that I was playing Daydream, and was skipping through tracks. I was turning up the volume to hear the end of "Long Ago", as there was new ad lib where she sang "typically, I don't wanna fight" twice, and a rapper chimed in with "this is unchallengeable, play me backwards". I took the hint and re-wound the entire disc by holding the back skip button, and after Fantasy, it jumped to "Track 21", which was I Am Free sung in Spanish. I ran to get my phone to record it to put it on YouTube, but by the time I got back, she had reverted to English again. I went back to track 1 of the new tracks, and it was a really hip song, like a sped up Fantasy, indeed called Unchallengeable. The whole other album was called "Another Daydream". I love having these types of dreams, and wish so badly it was real.

Favourite album (39,029)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
This is always such a tough topic. In terms of the 90s, I really am torn between Daydream and Emotions. I know 90% of fans say Butterfly, but it was a bit too somber for me, though I do love The Roof, Breakdown and Babydoll. For 2000 to now, I'm going to say (gasp) Glitter. Vocally, it was one of her best records. Loverboy is one of my favourite songs of Mariah's, and I loved the video. Lead the Way, If We, All My Life, Never Too Far, Reflections... great tracks. Close behind would be Emancipation and Charmbracelet.

Tracklisting (38,918)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I'm a little suspicious of the track listing. I did get excited to see a collaboration with Stevie Wonder produced by Wally A, but I can't get my hopes up. Doesn't Walter still ultimately work for Sony (i.e. employed by them)? Doubt they would let him work on another label. I think the album will be MOAIA 2, and not the return to form we are hoping for. #Beautiful was good, but not great. The Dream is back on the scene. Another album of slow jams and finger snaps? I hope not.

Ariana Grande (38,825)

I had to check this girl out. Pretty voice but lol, this girl has like no diction. Am I the only one who can't understand a word she sings? It sounds like another language. I listened to a song called I Love The Way. But back to Mariah. Yes, Daydream did set the bar in many ways, and Butterfly was like an updated Daydream. I'm not sure what it is, but Butterfly just doesn't quite deliver the punch that Daydream did for me. Over time, it was grown on me more and more though. Tracks like Breakdown, Babydoll, The Roof... beautiful songs. In fact, The Roof is probably one of the best songs Mariah has ever written. I love how atmospheric it is, and how the driving beat and sirens and bells and things all help simulate being out on a rooftop in the rain, and her soft, soft vocals. Wonderful. I need to go listen to it now lol.

Daydream / Stacey (38,821)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I agree Stacey, Daydream has always been my favourite album. I know a lot of fans like Butterfly and Emancipation over it, but for me the songwriting was really on point with Daydream. Every track worked, and there was so much going on (every song had "layers" of vocals, instruments, background etc., that the whole mood and vibe was indeed like being in a dream). Also think the remixes put out for the singles were the best (love the acapella of One Sweet Day, UTS Drifting Remix and of course Fantasy with ODB, but also loved the Def Club Mix and the Morales ABMB mix). Her best tour supported it as well (and I went to the London date - unforgettable).

Thank you. The ABMB cover has long been one of my favourite pictures of Mariah. I remember when I saw the single in the record store after school that I actually gasped I was so stunned by it. What is your favourite single or album cover? My best album cover is probably Music Box or Merry Christmas. Aside from ABMB I also love Without You, Loverboy and Make It Happen.

Toni Braxton (38,816)
by Bill from the UK

|

I've long been a fan of Toni Braxton and her smooth, soulful vocals. I loved the first couple of albums she put out. A Babyface collab with her and Mariah has the potential to sound fantastic - the husky lows of Toni's alto against Mariah's soprano could really work.

Stephen / PJW / Eric (38,758)
by Bill from the UK

It is wonderful to see people behave so respectfully towards each other. PJW's message was always going to rattle a few cages, but it was an intelligent and noteworthy observation he made, and some of the responses he received were completely unwarranted. Stephen, couldn't have put it better myself. Eric, love the new look and the encouragement of different views here. This has long been my only Mariah reference point - as I have grown up I find I only have time to really check one site these days (it's all you need for news, info and discussions), long may it continue. Always appreciate your efforts and I don't take this site for granted. Thanks for everything over the years.

PJW / Jaker20 (38,730)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Well PJW, you certainly instigated an interesting debate. In my opinion, Mariah does owe something to her fans. We were the ones who supported her, bought her records by the bucket load and helped her realise her dream and have "a house in Capri with her own G4 and a Benz with the doors that lift up from the floor" (Get Your Number). Sure she has natural talent, but a lot of musicians are equally as talented or more so than Mariah and do not have a fanbase as supportive as hers. So yes, she owes us. Just like any successful business owes their customers. Let's not forget she also described herself as a "corporation" (Obsessed). Mariah is paid huge amounts of money to sing. I am paid money to do my job, and I don't copy and paste work I did ten years ago. This is effectively what she does when she mimes. The sad fact is, like Whitney, it is seemingly self inflicted. She drinks and never sleeps and parties. "Purple takes her higher" (It's Like That). But then, Jesus was a cross maker.

Looking In (38,685)
by Bill from the UK

Looking In was lipped. Haha, just kidding. My gosh, what a performance. That completely took me by surprise, and was the best performance she has done in a long, long time. So emotive and fragile, and sung with such dignity and grace. What a joy to listen to.

Slipping Away (38,645)
by Bill from the UK

I love this track, right from the first listen. I always thought its removal from Daydream was because of it's subject matter. To me, the song is about Mariah and Tommy's failing marriage, so maybe he felt it hit a little too close to home?

Favourite first single (38,337)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Good topic. Mine was definitely Fantasy. I became a fan during 1993/1994 when Music Box and its singles were big in the UK. By the time her Christmas album was out, I was a huge fan and I had purchased her previous albums and played them all constantly every day. When I heard Fantasy on the radio, I remember listening through the whole song, sitting on the floor of my bedroom writing in a diary, then right at the song's climax (exact period was at 3:25 lol) the DJ excitedly said "What an amazing new song from Mariah Carey." And my whole body went cold and I leapt up and hit the record button on my stereo (I always kept a blank tape in it to record songs from the radio). I played the small segment of the song I had (with the DJ talking over it) relentlessly and stayed by the radio until I heard it again and could record from the beginning. It was so different, modern, cool, and unexpected. Still to this day one of the best songs she ever did.

Album cover / Loverboy (38,191)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
If I could redo an album cover, it would be #1's. Some promo adverts had a different cover, a shot of Mariah from what seemed like the same photoshoot that produced the single cover for The Roof. It was much better in my opinion. #1's extended her ankles to make her legs look longer and it looks ridiculous. As for Loverboy, I love the video, it is one of my favourites. Every shot looks like a photograph. I love the bright colours against the cobalt blue sky and the racing cars. Just brilliant.

Best ballad (38,113)

Mariah in the UK (37,772)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Hi Billy (good name by the way), you are right, the UK never really took to Mariah the way her home country did. She was popular and respected during the early 90s, but really since Butterfly her popularity nosedived. The only songs of hers I ever hear on the radio are Without You, Hero, I'll Be There, Endless Love and We Belong Together. And even then, they're played on adult contemporary stations. I can't fathom why she lost what was once a very large following, because although she did evolve both her image and sound, it wasn't that drastic a move away from what she was doing before, more a natural progression to keep her sound current. As for her image change, she was young and attractive (still is of course) and was not dressed that much different from her peers. I think because she was once categorised with Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand, people wanted her to stay that way.

Beautiful music (37,729)
by Bill from the UK

|
|
Well, I completely fell in love with Beautiful on first listen. So fresh and unlike anything she has done before. This is a real treat for us fans and I'm so pleased she has a relatively big platform (AI) to launch it. Whether it succeeds in the charts is immaterial to me. Mariah has come out with a fantastic lead track and I hope the rest of the album follows suit. Completely taken by surprise.

Set list (37,039)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I think the set list looks okay to me. It has a nice mix of her older material and her later releases. I suppose when your career spans 20 years and you have had so many hits, it must be hard to find a balance. I guess most artists would kill for that predicament. That said, I was surprised that Vision Of Love didn't make an appearance, as she has always made a point to sing that, and also I was equally shocked to not see Without You on the line up as that was her international break through in many territories, Australia being no exception.

Still discovering (36,974)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
What I love about Mariah's music is, years later, I still find I am discovering new things in her songs. Today, after having heard the song well in excess of 1,000 times previously, I heard for the first time a very low "ooooh" harmony in "Can't Let Go", as Mariah sings the word "just" on the "just cast aside" line. Has anybody else had any recent discoveries like this? Am I alone in hearing new things years and years later?

UK evergreens (36,819)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
The discussion around Mariah's evergreens is interesting, because it depends on what country you are from really. Emotions, whilst a great demonstration of Mariah's vocal techniques, was a #1 in the US, but a minor hit (top forty) everywhere else. From a UK perspective, the only songs of hers I ever hear on the radio are All I Want For Christmas Is You, Hero, Without You, Endless Love and We Belong Together. Sometimes the urban stations play the Fantasy remix, but only when doing a "90s" or "vintage" playlist. A lot of her huge hits stateside were minor hits everywhere else (particularly her earlier recordings), so it shouldn't be that surprising that somebody from Europe doesn't consider a song like Emotions as evergreen as others may.
