Why the dislike? (111,119)

It's not that I dislike "Thank God I Found You", I just don't really care for it. To me, it feels generic and overcrowded, almost as if Mariah was unsuccessfully trying to recreate the magic of "One Sweet Day". While I don't think it truly deserved the #1 spot, I can admit it's still a decent song. And no, I'd never compare it to Crapfinity, that one is in a league of hideous all on its own. Mariah had a golden chance to redeem that track with the "Why You Mad Remix", ft big names of the moment like Justin Bieber, French Montana, and T.I., yet somehow the result was even worse. On the flip side, the "Thank God I Found You (Make It Last Remix)" is fantastic, and I believe it played a huge role in pushing the original to the top of the charts.

It was originally intended to be a duet with KCI and JoJo (of Jodeci) but for whatever reason that fell through. In that context the song makes perfect sense. It sounds very much like All My Life, their previous US no 1. Joe and 98 Degrees just didn’t have the same cred or vibe as Jodeci so it just came off cheesy. But the remixes are fire indeed.

I love the original version of "Thank God I Found You". I think it would have worked better as a duet with Joe without 98 Degrees featured, but there is something very uplifting about the song's optimism. I think it fit well with what was popular in terms of late 90s and early 00s pop-soul ballads. I believe it would have gotten more radio airplay if the "Rainbow" album had received stronger promotion.

Thank you for the summary. If I remember correctly, the Cream sample was originally intended for Always Be My Baby. Surprised it didn't then find its way onto the remixes JD did.
As for TGIFY, I don't think anyone really dislikes it, more that amongst her number ones it's considered one of the more formulaic and basic numbers. The Make It Last remix far eclipses the original. I also felt there were too many voices on the song and it would have been better as just a duet between MC and Joe, it didn't really need 98 Degrees.

So for the last few days, I've been listening to TGIFY. I've always loved that song, even though I rarely listen to it. Granted from an Rnb perspective the remix could be considered stronger. Anyway I tend to notice people on here and other Mariah discussion forums, talking about their disdain for the original song. My question is why, what makes people not like this #1 song?

KATSEYE was asked at the VMAs red carpet about their favorite Mariah song and none of them could name 1 song. Just 1 girl was like (My All) and the rest were like so confused and one girl asked the girl who named the song to give her a title as well. Now I don't know this group well, but apparently they're popular but for them not to know a single song by the legend that is Mariah Carey is insane. Like I don't expect them to know her full catalogue but if nothing else at least say AIWFCIY. And there are so many viral Mariah songs on TikTok. Also you're on a red carpet where she's winning a major award, you should have been more prepared to answer that question.

I'm trying to spend less, but I'm afraid a HFA Daydream SUD triple release will set me back. Lol I'd definitely buy all those vinyls. I salute the effort made by Gamma and Team Mariah to attack one (non-American) territory full-on. • Capital's Summertime Ball had ~80,000 attendees ~80% 18-39 and MC has made 2 appearances on the radiostation in June and August with multiple clips shared on social media. The Capital FM hosts loved her both times and that translates/transfers to Capital FM's core demographic of 15-34 with 7.5 million weekly and ~1.1 million daily listeners (London ~235,000) - who will be more primed for her album come September. The whole show was broadcast live on YouTube and aired on ITV, the premier UK commercial tv station with a 15% market share. It's still on available on ITV's streaming platforms.
• Brighton Pride ~50,000 attendees ~70% in 18-39 (no official broadcasting channels). Made several headlines and news articles, multiple clips shared on socials
• Heritage Live at Sandringham Estate ~10,000 to 30,000 attendees ~50% in 18-39 (no official broadcasting channel). Made several headlines and news articles, multiple clips shared on socials
• Harper's Bazaar UK July Cover and interview inspired the times critique and discussion on Revolt TV and many other publications. Socials and forums obviously quoted too. The cover photo and shoot garnered a lot of positive feedback, exclusively so. A rarity for Mariah's press coverage. Should point to an uptick in sales of the physical magazine issue. (Was also heavily featured during her Selfridge's "Here For It All" in-person fan-event. More on that later down the list).
• Selfridges Presents: Mariah Carey. Their flagship department store (located in London on Oxford Street, which attracts more than 500,000 daily visitors) has daily visitors in the tens of thousands and many more thousands would have shown up because Mariah is so high profile. From watching the videos and clips from fan-cams it was obviously a very successful turnout. It bordered on pandemonium in spots. Not a surprise since it was open to the public who were encouraged to sign up for free audience tickets. Promoted and curated as a Q&A session hosted by Clara Amfo of BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge. Clara has unfortunately left BBC 1 Radio about 3 days ago, citing depression and burnout, after 8 years. (Goes to show, how you can never know what people are going they behind the scenes no matter how well put together they come off in public. We wish Clara well as she privately recovers.) BBC 1 Radio has ~1million daily listeners. The Selfridges even displayed Mariah's Harper's Bazaar UK magazine for easy pickup as part of her promo. Fans have even gotten her to personally sign their copies since it came out and some have bought it as a collectors item.
Honorable mentions: ° BBC Radio 1Xtra Breakfast Show - Nadia Jae ° BBC Radio 2 - Scott Mills Breakfast Show ° Capital FM's Breakfast Show with Sian Welby, Jordan North, and Chris Stark. ° Smooth Radio - Angie Greaves ° Hits Radio Breakfast Show with Fleur East and Will Best
Apologies if I missed any appearances or persons. I know that it was not intentional.
In any case. I just wanted to list and document MC's rather assertive presence in the UK this Summer. She's been very visible and accessible to fans and civilians alike. It hasn't gone overboard, so when the HFIA album promotion picks up in September, The UK market will have her fresh on their minds and still curious. Hopefully Gamma and Team Mariah have fostered enough good will with all of this effort both on radio and the larger UK populus for a nice album debut position. I hope they push the McCartney cover in the UK and Europe especially. MC's "Without You" is still a radio staple in Europe. Everybody loves her version and that's when she really became a star across the Atlantic. I was quite surprised at how mid the American audience received it in comparison to us. I thought it important to give Team Mariah some credit for what they've done right so far. It's not all doom and gloom.

Taylor Swift (110,479)
by Tevin from USA
| |
|
|
So obviously we all love Mariah, otherwise we wouldn't be here, and Mariah has the right to live her life and present herself to the public however she sees fit. But, I will say that in today's time, that can be a double edged sword, right wrong or indifferent. I feel like younger Millennials and Gen Z are going through so much, as we all are in this world, and the one thing they like best is relatability. Gone are the days of divas and huge pop Icons that were treated as if they were royalty. When people are anxious, depressed, broke, lost, etc, the last thing they want to see is someone complaining or talking about the lighting, the size of their diamonds, or the expensive clothing they wear. This message or rant, isn't a dig on Mariah. We know she is a diva (the good version of that term), and she has earned the right to be, but you can't expect people to relate, like or spend their hard earned money on someone they can't connect with.
The thing that makes me the most disappointed is the fact that this would be the best time for Mariah the artist to shine. She could go into full breakdowns of a song writing process, production. Write for other current and upcoming artists. Discuss in depth the obstacles she had to overcome in the music business to be the successful artist and woman that she is today.
Basically what I'm trying to say is, there is no greater point in time than now where Mariah the artist, songwriter, producer and yes even singer (though limited), could shine and reach the masses. Just imagine a YouTube video or made for TV special of Taylor Swift and Mariah writing and composing a song together. It would break the Internet. Anyway rant over. Also, I can't wait to purchase Here for it All when it is released in September.

Taylor Swift (110,471)
by Edward from USA

Exactly my sentiment. I love Bobby A's positive outlook, but having realistic expectations matters too. If "Sugar Sweet" had been released by Ariana or any other hot artist of the moment, I'm sure it would've taken off. Sadly, Mariah just isn't on most people's radar these days. We, her remaining fans, will always root for her, but it's becoming clear that the general public just doesn't connect with her as an artist anymore, almost as if they can't relate. That's why she hasn't been able to ride the wave of AIWFCIY into a big follow-up project. Maybe she's said everything she had to say, but until she starts singing from her heart again, I don't see anything changing.
I can only name one Taylor Swift song, and that's because it shares a title with one of Mariah's, "Shake It Off". I'm not a fan of her music, even though I did give "Red" and its twenty variations a try. But when fans in non-English speaking countries are willing to camp outside stadiums for three months just to see her, regardless of promotions or record labels, it's clear she's universally loved like Mariah once was, before her diva persona took over.

I say, bring it on Taylor. I actually quite enjoy it if she dropped on the same day. For a myriad of reasons. Some I've already discussed on this board in the recent past. Taylor is desperate for a Christmas #1 but everybody knows why she won't anytime soon. Mariah's likely going to be #1 on her birthday one way or another. MC isn't chasing Taylor, Taylor's chasing MC. Good luck with that.
America isn't the only market. Other territories are much more into Mariah even in her "legacy" act season at. Mariah's spoiled us so much with albums back-to-back, stacked with hits that we forget some artists have built entire career off of one major commercially or critically acclaimed album or even one big hit. In a way she's been around so long that some people only associate her with AIWFC.
But then deep cuts from 2009 and even her older #1's from 1998 go viral regularly. There is obviously still a thirst for her brand of music. The chances of her going #1 with a new song are not as crazy as you'd think. What's that Chinese saying: When a butterfly flaps its wings...

Did I Do That is a good song, and other than Crybaby and Heartbreaker, it shows off Mariah's Rainbow era tone the best.
The remake of One More Try is one of the worst song remakes that I've ever heard.
I'd take a healthy Emancipation era voice or almost any prime era voice, minus 94-96 years. The richness, maturity and tone of Mariah's voice was incredible. Too bad it was too inconsistent and sort lived.
Last one, I'm glad Mariah's voice changed every two or so years, for good and for the bad. It made me appreciate her voice and artistry more, and it makes her more relatable, since we all have good days and bad days in life and with our skills and talents. We all are just trying to "do the best with what we got".

Jaker20, I think Portrait on Caution is heavy so she'll do at least one. Languishing from Memoirs is heavy. Most of yall hate it but Memoirs to me is the closest follow up to Butterfly. I remember Mariah saying in the promos for Glitter, I'll never abandon my ballads they are a part of me. We will get something heavy on the new album. Any word on an album title yet? Dangerous? No MJ did that. Overhead Lighting? Anniversaries? Hey, it's one word. Beauty School Drop Out? The Reinterpretation of Mimi? How about, The Mimi Theorem, a2 + b2 = c2? Maybe, Mariah Nunez? Me. What's your thoughts? (109,456)
by Tevin from USA
| |
|
|
Now that the hype for TD has cold off, what is everyone's thoughts on the single? Personally I think it was a fun song and I hope it makes it on MC 16 and doesn't get regulated to buzz single status.
I do think one mistake that was made with the song was the fact that Mariah broke her code of making her songs ambiguous. Songs like Obsessed and ILT was clearly referencing situations in Mariah's life, but lyrically the GP could connect and relate in their own way to the song.
Where in TD whether real or fiction, the lyrics was about Mariah Mariah Mariah. The presentation was to immature for older listeners, while the call backs and references flew right over younger listeners heads. To be honest, it's a good song but if I wasn't a Mariah Carey fan, I could care less what type of love interests she is interested in. That's why I think its failing with the GP.
I'm sure Mariah has even better songs coming. I just hope she has something that is relatable to the GP. Something that's catchy and simple, yet has depth to it, to appeal to all listeners.
What are you thoughts on TD?

I don't think that was recent. It was a few years ago when Mariah was given the Icon Award by Billboard.
