Most sight Butterfly as when he voice began to decline and change, but for me Daydream was the beginning of the end. It was just masked by good songs, good production, and confidence on the stage when performing. Main call-outs for you all to review is that her melisma became disjointed, most noticeable on songs like I Am Free. She breaks it up rather than just singing straight through the melody like she did on all her albums beforehand. Then all the body from her voice went too, best displayed by When I Saw You and Long Ago. She still sounds great but there was a very noticeable shift at this point. There was a part in her book (page 262) where she talks about Morgan had arranged a "spa" visit but it was actually a hardcore detox and rehab center. They administered her heavy, hard narcotics. Mariah said it made her sluggish, puffy and compliant. I believe this was them inducing mental illness to her. The book "Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties" reveals the MK ultra program, where they can give you mental illness via hard drugs. You'll have no choice but to be dependent on it, then you'll just be drugged to oblivion forever. I also vividly remember Mariah saying, "when I first found out about my diagnosis, I refused to believe it" which she was right. She never had mental illness to begin with. She was purposely driven to exhaustion to be easily irate. Pat knew which buttons to press and knew anyone who hasn't slept in a week will understandably snap. They then used her lashing out as an opportunity to misdiagnose, with the goal of inducing mental illness, to control her with drugs her whole life. I believe the mafia's desired effects have come into full bloom now. She is undoubtedly heavily depended on it; the dosage probably heightened, I would say right after NYE, when she exposed her BPD and admitted seeking "professional" help and probably even more so now, grieving Pat's death. Taking these meds is obviously a part of her pre-show ritual because she is rather sluggish and puffy. Every concert. I will categorize my assessment to be "allegedly" though, just to be marked safe. It's what I think make sense after recognizing what they've done to other pop stars and doing a deep dive in the history of Hollywood. I wouldn't say anyone is threatening her necessarily but I will say Mariah is aware of the patterns of their financial terrorism. So many have tried to come for her money. Right now Morgan (which is not to be trusted) is suing the crap out of her over her memoir. I think she is always working hard to afford top-notched lawyers, it really does take money to win cases. There's also a chance Morgan may be backed up again by the mafia. He was already in cahoots with the record company during Mariah's first breakdown and considering how many mainstream publications picked up this case. (People, The NY Times, Daily Mail, Today, Fox News, The Sun, Page Six etc.) A PR firm that's verifiably against Mariah is blasting these articles to the masses. I have read the filings and Morgan is relentless for her money. He is very technical and somehow found a way to forward this case into trial. Mariah will actually have swear under oath pretty soon. That and she's probably preparing to have more than enough sufficient funds for her biopic. Production and talent fees are expensive. It's maybe why she's working herself to the bone. It made me think of Britney Spears and her conservatorship. She was forced to perform at Las Vegas for years against her will. Do you think Mariah could be in the same kind of situation? Maybe she owes lots of money to someone or maybe she's under threat and has no choice. That could explain her strange behavior on stage and interview, why she looks so miserable and the fact she hasn't release anything for years. Could be the only way she found to call for help. The real question (108,832) by Sasha from Nomansland To me the real question is why does she put herself through this? She looks so bored, weary and unhappy on stage, same on interviews. Everything she does in public seems to cause her such pain, like she's trapped in her own personal hell. She doesn't have to do it, she owes nothing to the world. She has far enough money to just chill and relax, enjoy life, take care of herself and only does what she likes. She could write and produce for others and stay away from the spotlight and bad lightnings that bother her so much. I really don't understand the point if she can't find joy in it anymore. So if you see this video containing the whole concert from that perspective, you would think that there could be some lipping, but the rest would be mainly live. But if you see all the Mariah videos from the first concert uploaded 7/8 days ago on this channel, you truly can see the real thing happening, that is, she's lipping everything except for 5 specific moments throughout the entire concert. The recordings are so zoomed-in that it is so evident. Besides, sometimes she skips phrases, she starts miming two seconds later or she's just too lazy to pretend to be making an effort on the belting parts. As I said before, at least, we have new high-quality recordings of most of the songs. To be honest, I became aware of the lipping thing (you know, the lipped parts of some songs) back in 2008. At that moment and after analyzing so many performances, I realized that she had been doing it from 1997 (the belted section of Honey at Top of the Pops, for example). It was a total and complete letdown, and I took my time to process it. I'm a huge fan and I'll always be. I'll keep following her forever. For sure, she uses lipping for whatever reasons, some of them have been explained or theorized here and I can agree with them, but it is a fact. For the majority of the 1990's Mariah could do no wrong, she was America's sweetheart and had countless number one songs and albums. People took her into their hearts and adored her. From 1997 she made what some call a drastic change in musical direction and lost some of her core fanbase as a result. However she continued to have number one songs and albums even through a difficult time with Sony and Tommy Mottola. Why was it then that during her most difficult time in her life in 2001 did people turn their backs on her? Surely someone who they had grown to love had spent so long adoring her and buying her music would want to support her during this difficult time. Glitter and Charmbracelet failed to sell anywhere near what she would normally sell. My point is, is it the general public who turn on an artist so quickly, is it the music industry and media that set current trends what is a hit and what the people want or is it bad decisions made by Mariah the artist. For me it's just difficult to understand how such a quick switch in popularity can happen with someone who was literally a force of nature at one point. Firstly I don't think the whole Glitter film helped her persona one bit, 9/11 didn't help but the film just wasn't good enough 9/11 or not. The album or soundtrack is great but in hindsight should it have been left on the shelf once the film tanked to help control the damage from the film and save her also having a music flop too which was unheard of at the time. Would her next album then have been more well received by the public. For me I like Charmbracelet but it feels almost like a complete different body of work to the rest of her catalogue (present and past included) the whole vibe is just different. Were bad decisions made by Mariah creatively should she have come back with an upbeat track ala Fantasy/Honey mode and had less rappers on the album, it would be interesting to see if the Glitter album hadn't been released and she had come back with a stronger album (maybe a combination of Glitter tracks and new ones and called it something else) how her popularity would have been at that time and now. Or had the public already turned their backs on her and changed their view of her as a person. Obviously we had Emancipation but that was very short lived, and since then with the exception of Touch My Body and Christmas she hasn't got anywhere near the popularity she should have had. Do you think the general public just doesn't warm to her anymore, is it Mariah's decisions of music creativity or the way her persona has come across post 2001, or do you think it's the music industry making wrong decisions for her career? We can't change what happens but sometimes it's interesting to put a different spin on how we think things could have gone or been. Why is anyone expecting her to be a lightning bolt or prancing around the stage? That's not her gig, never has been. The most dancing she's done was in the Glitter club scene. So demanding that Mariah needs to boot it around stage, just like "fetch", it's never gonna happen, so enjoy how amazing she is in all her other talents. Of which Mariah has many. MC, Ariana and JHud (104,514) by Norman from USA I liked the performance up until the solo whistle. Mistakes happen and it was live, but not good. I'm thinking that maybe the stiffness might be due to medication of some sort - maybe bipolar meds? Cognitively she's fine, but the stiffness is the odd part. She's obviously not a dancer but she knows how to cover a stage, so it's not a lack of experience. At the Hollywood Bowl night I went to while still stiff, she moved around a lot better - and by herself mostly - so I'm puzzled. It could also be a back thing. Observation (102,428) by MC85 from Canada I agree with you Lady B. This is partly why I rarely post and haven't been visiting the board as much these days. Life has been especially hard lately for so many people, including me, and the world often seems like it's on the brink. Mariah and her music have always been and always will be a beacon of light in my life and I've been needing that more than ever lately. I consider myself extremely lucky and am beyond grateful that Mariah continues to provide me with utter joy, the sense of peace, and the much needed reminder that I'm not truly alone thanks to her music. I just don't see the point in picking someone apart, criticizing them and constantly expressing disappointment towards them when they have given me so much life. That's just me though. So it becomes abundantly clear when the lip syncing and pre-records kick in. Usually though we are put on notice as Mariah will fiddle with the malfunctioning ear piece (which I think is actually her cue to the sound technician), and then waggle her head when she mimes the note. If you enjoyed the concert good for you, but any spectator can see it was one of her worst yet. Hardly phenomenal as you put it. Mariah's voice (99,198) by Sasha from Nomansland For me, Mariah is a woman who is deeply sad and shattered by a personal life that has always been chaotic. Her current voice is the result. The only thing she has always wanted is a stable personal life. Someone who loves her for what she is. Someone she can rely on. She thought she would get it by being with Tommy but it turned into a nightmare. Then the failure of her marriage to Nick was devastating and she has never recovered since. If she was truly happy in her life, she would have made other choices for herself and her health. Her voice wouldn't certainly be what it is today. But that's just my opinion.
