Chart moves
This week on the Billboard 200 albums chart, Miranda Lambert claimed her first No. 1, as "Platinum" bowed with 180,000 sold in the week ending June 8, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's her fifth top 10 effort overall, and it made Lambert just the 11th female country artist to top the Billboard 200 chart. Outside the top 10, there were a number of movers and shakers - let's take a closer look at some of them.
Various Artists, "Now That's What I Call Country 7" - No. 11 - The latest in the "Now"-branded compilation series starts at No. 11 with 30,000 sold. All seven of the numbered volumes in the Now That's What I Call Country series have reached the top 40. In total, the seven volumes - along with Now's Country Christmas and two Country Ballads albums - have sold 1.96 million.
Lucy Hale, "Road Between" - No. 14 - The singer/actress' debut effort launches at No. 14, and also enters at No. 4 on the Top Country Albums chart. On the latter list, it's the year's second-highest bow for a female country soloist's debut album on the genre chart, following Jennifer Nettles' No. 1 debut with "That Girl".
Austin Mahone, "The Secret" (EP) - No. 33 - Last week's two biggest debuts, Mariah Carey's "Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse" (No. 18 with 16,000) and Mahone's "The Secret" (8,000) tumble by 72 percent and 82 percent, respectively, in their second frames. A week ago, they debuted at Nos. 3 and 5.
Soundgarden, "Superunknown" - No. 52 - The rock band's best-selling album (3.8 million) returns in a reissued deluxe format, selling 6,000 (up 1,024 percent) and re-entering at No. 52. A super deluxe version of the album debuts at No. 97 with 3,000.
Taeyang, "Rise" - No. 112 - Taeyang is the third member of the K-pop Big Bang quintet to chart a solo effort on both Heatseekers Albums and World Albums, as Rise launches at No. 1 on each tally. He follows earlier charting efforts from Big Bang's G-Dragon and Seungri. "Rise" also bows at No. 112 on the Billboard 200.
MeShell Ndegeocello, "Comet Come to Me" - No. 161 - The singer/songwriter makes her eighth Billboard 200 visit, with her highest-charting set since 2003, as Comet Come to Me shoots in with 3,000 sold. On R&B Albums, it starts at No. 11. Ndegeocello's nearly 21-year Billboard chart history began with the song "Dred Loc" in October of 1993.
Original Broadway Cast Recording, "Violet" - No. 197 - The show, nominated for four Tony Awards, is one of two Broadway cast albums to debut this week. ("If/Then" is the other, at No. 19.) "Violet" garnered its star Sutton Foster her sixth Tony nomination, for actress in a leading role in a musical. (Billboard)
