A recent performance by the Queen of Christmas, otherwise known as Mariah Carey, is being criticized after a video went viral online. Carey, 54, has been traveling for a month now on her festive Merry Christmas One and All! tour, which kicked off on November 15 at the Yaamava Casino in Highland, California. She has performed at a variety of venues across America and Canada, with her final gig to take place at Madison Square Garden in New York on December 17.
One of her most popular songs is "All I Want For Christmas Is You", which annually brings the singer millions of dollars. The classic track has recently been inducted into the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry and currently sits at the coveted #1 spot on this week's Billboard Global charts.
Now a clip of her singing the song while dressed in a Nutcracker uniform while on tour has been uploaded to X, formerly Twitter, by user Dr. Jebra Faushay - and people aren't too impressed. Newsweek reached out to a representative for Carey via email Friday for comment.
"I haven't seen Mariah Carey perform in years! I love her pants. And her dancing is on point," the X user wrote in a sarcastic tone. At the time of writing the video has been viewed 4.3 million times and people have flocked to the comment section to share their thoughts.
"When you have so much money and fame and ego that you don't even have to try anymore," one person wrote, to which Faushay replied: "You don't have to wear pants either."
"I always enjoy a good old fashioned lip sync," said another.
"Lip syncing and barely can move. This tells you everything you need to know about society right now. They are numb, distracted by glitter and make believe, and will be entertained by anything you put in front of them - even if it's fake," someone else commented. Another added: "I guess they didn't pay her enough to move. Lol."
Not everyone was unimpressed, however, as others jumped to Carey's defense. "I think it's pretty great a modern artist created a Christmas classic," someone commented. "Literally nothing about your face is real so I wouldn't be critiquing anything about anyone," a Carey fan said.
While some people may be critical, with 16 sold-out arena performances, the Merry Christmas One And All! tour has seen unprecedented success. On December 17, Carey will release a mini-documentary that offers a unique behind-the-scenes peek at the tour as it builds to its finale. It will be able to be watched on Carey's official YouTube account.
