Miley Cyrus fangirls over fellow M.C. Mariah Carey

She hopped off the plane at LAX with a dream and a cardigan - and she's going home with an award. Miley Cyrus won her first-ever Grammy Award Sunday night for her song "Flowers", and received the trophy from Mariah Carey, who presented the award for Best Pop Solo Performance. Cyrus looked thrilled when the "Always Be My Baby" singer called her name (which she might have pronounced Mari Sarus?) - not just because of the win, but also because she was starstruck by the presenter.

Once Cyrus made her way to the stage, the two M.C.s chatted for several moments off-mic before she began her speech. "This M.C. is gonna stand by this M.C. for this, because this is just too iconic," she said. "I just got stuck in the rain in traffic and thought I was gonna miss this moment, and I could've missed the award, that's fine. But not Mariah Carey. I just saw you at the Hollywood Bowl, it was everything. I got sat in my lucky number 3 seat."

Cyrus went on to describe her winning song with a parable about a butterfly. "There's a story I wanna tell that sums up this moment, and I wasn't gonna tell it, but now Mariah's here," she said. "So there was a little boy that all he wanted for his birthday was a butterfly. And so his parents gave him a butterfly net. And he was so excited, he just went outside out in the sun and started swinging and swinging, but with no luck."

"He sat down on the ground, he finally let go and he surrendered," Cyrus continued. "He was okay that he wasn't gonna capture this beautiful butterfly. And right when he did is when the butterfly came and landed right on the tip of his nose. And this song Flowers is my butterfly. Thank you." Carey enthusiastically celebrated Cyrus' story. "Yes!" the "Fantasy" singer and famous butterfly enthusiast said.

Cyrus beat out Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, and Olivia Rodrigo to win the Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance. "Flowers" is also nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year, while her album Endless Summer Vacation is nominated for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.

"Miley Cyrus has never been afraid of spilling some tea and speaking her mind, so it didn't reaaally surprise us when she threw some Mimi shade. Miley spoke to Elle US about 'seeing through her shtick'. 'I've never really been a fan, because it's so much about Mariah Carey,' she said. 'That's part of her shtick, I can see through that.' But she didn't stop there. 'That's part of what makes her a gay icon, like, it's about Mimi. It's about what she's wearing, and it's about her. What I make isn't about me. It's about sharing my story, it's about someone being connected to what I'm saying.' Damn." Reported in Cosmopolitan 2017.

2017 was a good 7 years earlier and Miley was a lot younger. She might have since then realized she misspoke and that Mariah is a songwriter and storyteller first and then everything else. I can understand that from personal experience. I didn't know Mariah's work well, infact I was a Westlife fan and one day I hear the Against All Odds collaboration (this was years later after its release, I was a going through my pre teen boy band phase) I was like who is this singer she has a beautiful voice, cut to the MTV Cribs episodes and I was annoyed how many times Mariah was changing and being over the top (I hadn't yet realized her sense of humor). I finally became a lamb during TEOM and then worked my way backwards on her previous releases including replaying the Cribs episode because it was iconic. Once I realized how much Mariah is involved in her music and how she's a songwriter and producer and how she lives and breathes music I was blown away. I was obsessed with finding her re-recorded remixes, checking out her lyrics and all that jazz. It took me more time to realize all the insane layers to her artistry. What matters to be is on stage and in front everyone Miley gave Mariah the utmost respect and the butterfly anecdote to me means she really understood the depth to Mariah's work. Also I can see where her previous comment came from. Even Mariah said she isn't taken seriously as a songwriter. And we all know casual listeners know of her personality before they know about her art. Plus her "shades" go viral everytime. Basically her personality eclipses her art until you actually take the time to see what otherworldly talent she possesses.
