American Idol: weekly musical themes
We've heard the rumors about Mariah Carey and Sir Paul McCartney showing up on "Idol" this year. According to speculation on the "Idol" boards, Bruce Springsteen allegedly plays the role of "Jewel" at the New York auditions this year. We heard Simon mention that week seven would be ABBA week (finally). And some folks over on the "Idol" boards are hoping to see a Christian-themed week (no, please, no).
I am a little frightened by these prospects. First of all, I'm hoping the Mariah week will be a week that encompasses all '90s songs, not just Mariah's catalogue. I really don't want to see poor Sanjaya Malakar have to squeak out "Dreamlover". We're always saying, Randy Jackson and I, that if you're not Mariah Carey, you should avoid singing Mariah Carey songs. I would vote to ban Mariah songs altogether, but realistically I know that will never happen. We are destined to experience "Hero" by at least one wretched contestant each year. It's in the "Idol" code. In addition, it might literally kill my poor STiVo if anyone sings "Wonderful Christmas Time" during Paul McCartney week.
Anywho, here are some of my ideas/predictions/hopes/fears for weekly themes this year. Since they're finally talkin' 'bout ABBA on the show, and I mentioned ABBA about 976 times on my blog last year, one has to assume They're lurking and reading and taking notes. And hopefully They're not taking any advice from those people who are jonesing for a Jars of Clay/Amy Grant Week. 2007 Dream Themes
Famous TV Theme Songs featuring guest judge Alan Thicke
Sad Bastard Music featuring John Mayer
James Bond Theme Songs featuring A-Ha
One Hit Wonders featuring the 4 Non Blondes
Hits of the Supremes featuring Diana Ross (you can almost bank on this one as Diana Ross has an album dropping (Dawgism) soon)
The Very Best of Peter Cetera featuring you know who
Food-Themed Songs
Brit Pop featuring Jarvis Cocker of Pulp (I would probably cry tears of both joy and pain if this actually happened. Joy from hearing James' music played on the telly, and pain from hearing the new Mikalah Gordon wannabe mangle "Laid")
Songs About Rain
The Music of Mozart featuring, very unfortunately, Charlotte Church (there's no way the Idols can be worse than she is when it comes to singing classical music)
The Sounds of Jungle Animals
Duet Week with Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes
Latin Pop featuring William Hung (phillyBurbs)
