This song is still so good. I love that it's so dreamy. It's unique and pure Mariah. Justin and his management were so stupid that they didn't want to release the remix with Mariah. That was a missed opportunity.

So true. I always liked Brenda K Starr. She was always so nice in interviews, beautiful lady. Isn't she a New Yorker girl too? It was so sweet when she sung "I still believe" with Mariah. At least one person who's not jealous.

I just watched a virtual interview with Brenda K Starr from 2021, it was great to see her be so lovely and complementary about Mariah. It was nice to see how much she does actually care about Mariah although they have fallen out at times. She has nothing but praise for Mariah and wishes her well in all she does. I think it must be hard when you have been that close to someone and they are propelled into super stardom, as the artist doesn't always have control over their life.

The real reason for no respect (102,304)

Oh no, Mariah only a singer or songwriter. No way. What a terrible thought. Mariah was born to sing with that talent. Her voice made so many people happy around the world and still does.

Great post. Absolutely yes to this "the fact that she was stunningly beautiful and an equally uniquely phenomenal singer as she was a songwriter, which definitely caused envy, because honestly which one of her contemporaries was actually doing it like her?"
I think most of the people were simply jealous of her because of all the reasons. She was too perfect, she had everything. It's like you said, the most wonderful voice, the look and her powerful husband back then. Plus her charisma, charming and sweet. I was just watching "Without you", "One sweet day" and "Thank God I found you" on YouTube, I've watched hundred times in my life and I'm still blown away about her talent and her voice. Plus she has the most beautiful smile and eyes. Superstar power all over.

Chaka Khan (102,288)
by Mirage_Nunez from America

My personal theory is there's multiple layers as to why Mariah was never as celebrated as Whitney (and Beyoncé) ie the industry favorite. I honestly feel like the Whitney comparisons in the beginning is/was a factor. Everyone lauded Whitney as the undisputed best voice ever, until MC hit the scene and shook things up a bit. I believe many people who were diehard Whitney supporters, felt the need to downplay Mariah's talent and success) in solidarity to Whitney Houston. The supposed rivalry created this (most of the time) unspoken great divide.
Then there's Tommy. I believe he had a lot to do with her lack of Grammy wins for multiple reasons. I'll start with the fact that he tried to use Mariah passing for white as a privilege. I know first hand that this perception that "Mariah didn't want people to know that she was part black at first" hurt her in the court of public opinion specifically in the black community back then, and maybe in the industry amongst her black peers. Then there's the machine that was behind her, the fact that she was stunningly beautiful and an equally uniquely phenomenal singer as she was a songwriter, which definitely caused envy, because honestly which one of her contemporaries was actually doing it like her? Seriously, until this day nobody is really doing it on the level Mariah did it as a singer/songwriter. So yes people were jealous and bias against her, and what made it worse is that they couldn't honestly with a good heart deny her extraordinary talent. Like many have said, she actually has the chops to back up all the astronomical success she's had.
I don't care what generation you come from, one thing that you absolutely can not do is deny Mariah's talent and impact. She's one of the most ordained purposeful artist ever, so trying to discredit her in any way falls very short and holds no weight.
I've read the comments and the people ie the general public unanimously agreed that Mariah deserved to be in the top five. That's all that matters. She's always been the peoples champ and not the industry favorite. Like many have stated no amount of payola in the world can cause people to really purchase your music, watch your videos, and curate three decades of continuous organic success. My second favorite female singer is simply straight up jealous of my first favorite, and she resents the fact that her solo career wasn't as illustrious as Mariah's. Also allow me to add that, I specifically liked Chaka Khan with the band Rufus, I may like only a couple of her solo hits, so that's that. Maybe she also resents that her best music is connected to the band and not just her, unlike Mariah who's a stand alone hit maker.

Music this year (102,289)
by MusicfanJ from Germany
| |
|
|
Yes, sadly the golden days of music are over. I miss heart and soul in the music. In the past we had wonderful melodies with good lyrics or at least music that was fun (like summer hits and so on).
Hopefully there will come a time where good music will have a comeback. I listen a lot to Soul and Jazz besides Mariah. And those old songs are all masterpieces and the artists were really artists who could sing or play. It's unbelievable that songs with that quality are often 50-60 years old.

Music has been very boring and no excitement on the pop radio this year. I really feel this is the trend that is here to stay for a very long time. I do like the new Kali Uchis album Red Moon On Venus. It is a moody dreamy album about heartbreak.

Hype for new album (102,269)
by Edward from USA

She should concentrate on putting good music out. At this point she won't be selling a lot, but new music would give her some relevancy. Marian [sic] used to have a veil of mystery, so I appreciate her being quiet and let the music do the talking. Every time she hypes something up, it ends up being a disappointment.

TikTok video with Kim K. (102,263)

I can't stand the Kardashians. Why are they so famous in the US? They are rich, one is a model and married with Mr. Kanye West. But for me they are boring celebrities'. Pure self-promoter. I don't need a TikTok video, new music is needed. But somehow I have a feeling that there won't come a new album soon. I hope I'm wrong. But as always I'm happy to listen to her music catalogue. But there must be more hidden music, I'm still waiting for another Rarities.

TikTok video with Kim K. (102,262)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
I'm living for the video becauseI love both Mariah and Kim. I am wondering if they're cooking something up together. Kim's shapewear brand Skims always does a lot of collaborations like she had all the OG supermodels for her "Icons" collection, then she had Megan Fox, recently she had the 2 girls from the comedic hit "White Lotus" for valentine's collection so I wonder if she'll have a "Diva's" range or if this a project of Marian's. Like why would Mariah be at Kim's house. I would love to be a fly on the wall for that chat haha. Mariah had previously subtly shaded Kardashians but recently warmed up to them starting with the AIWFCIY celebrity edition, then following Kris Jenner and posting photos with Kris. The Kardashians have always from the start been Mariah stand. I have seen countless times them playing Marian's songs on all the sister's stories including Kendall and Kylie. Kendall even recently used "Fantasy" in one of her perfume ads along with paying homage to the "Honey" pool dive scene. So I would love to know what lead to this TikTok collab. Right after this, Kim and Kylie also did the "It's a wrap" challenge.

I like The Dream and loved My Love but would never recommend this album to a non-lamb. Very depressing, sans Obsessed. She was obviously in a dark place. I did love seeing her promote it on the today show upon its release, though. The whole album's tone can be set by the Betcha Gon Know intro. You see, Caution is a "mood" album. Memoirs is a "moody" album. Big diff.

Yes, should have been a number one. It was played a lot at MTV and even on the radio it was "received very well". I still have it on cassette from 97 "my rnb mixtape" self recorded from radio. The older I get the more I value Butterfly and its lyrics. It's really a masterpiece, epic song.

This song is still so brilliant. By the first listen in 97 I loved this song. I think it's beside "Hero" Mariah's hymn. An emotional ballad, poetic lyrics and a beautiful, classy video. We all know that Mariah described her new free life with it and the tough relationship with Tommy. But for me the song can also be about friendship, changes, dreams and life in general. Today the people won't get a song like this again. In 97 the music and the artists from many genres were really awesome. Music will always be a mirror of the times. I miss those days.

Yes, but it's understandable for Mariah to take this step. I don't know about the US law but here Mariah would easily get the primary custody. I mean with six different mothers, we call that antisocial here. Sorry, but it's the truth. And maybe Nick won't stop and there will be a another woman with a child from him. Definitely not a normal situation for children. So I hope Mariah is getting the custody.

I always had a bad feeling about Nick. When the press started to show the pics of the "so in love" couple on the beach (just after E=MC2 release), I thought if Mariah is happy with that man, everything is fine. But that bad feeling stayed. He was not known here and still isn't very known in Germany. But anyway, what it turned out is a real nightmare. Eminem may be a clown, but Mr. Cannon is worse. I wish they would have never met. But at least Mariah has sweet kids. I hope Bryan (also young), is a true soul. He seems very kind with a good heart.

Wow, congrats to the one and only MC. She really has broken every record one can break. On a side note: I was looking at the new Instagram pics, Mariah with Bryan and the kids. And I thought that look is so "Daydream Mariah". I love it. It's classy and beautiful. It really looks like 96. She has the sweetest smile, she really seems to enjoy the holidays. Something that makes me happy to see. All I want as a lifetime fan is a happy, healthy Mariah.
