The video did not count to her chart position this week though. It will count for next week. From what I heard, the video was released after the cut off time for chart points. So she got the #1 based on the hype of her and Drake's sexual tension/chemistry. The Navy may attack me now, but cut me some slack, I am in distress over this news.

The thing is, Rihanna getting more #1's is very possible solely because of the fact that with the change in Billboard's chart formula, it is easier for hyped up music to reach #1. It's not as hard as how it was when Mariah, MJ, The Beatles and Elvis had it. At that time your song truly had to reach people for it to get to #1. Now anyone can come and score a #1 by creating a viral video or by striking up a major publicity stunt. This is the only reason Rihanna can get to Mariah's record. No other reason. Mariah will still remain the songbird supreme, but she just won't have that one title that both the lambs and Mariah herself likes to rub on people's face every now and then. Lord knows I have had my share of "well Mariah has 18 #1's, how many does your fave?" moments. Sadly a few of them was to the Rihanna fans. Ugh karma.

Coming for the Billboard queen status (59,949)

Let's not even try to fool ourselves thinking that it will take Rihanna a few more years to pass Mariah. She can very well do it by this year or next year if she choose to. Why? Look at Taylor's 1989. Collected 3 #1's within a span of 2 years. Bieber's "Purpose" collected 3 #1's within a span of 1 year. So Rihanna can do the same. She doesn't even need to spend the 2nd week at #1, she'll just have to be there 1 week and that's it. If Mariah doesn't step up her game, she has to be fine with people asking her how it feels to have Rihanna surpass her record (Rihanna out of all the people in the world, heck I would have settled for Taylor even since she at least writes her material). There would be no more "18 #1's, not everyone has that".

The question of talent is irrelevant here. What is important to take note of is that a woman is being rejected the right to freedom and is forced to be under the control of her alleged abuser and the only way she can pursue her dreams (of writing music and performing) is by staying under this person's control or the only other path is to abandon her passion. No woman, or man, deserves this, regardless of their profession, position and situation.

Nah the makeup wasn't working for me. It looked patchy and the the bronzer/contour shade combo kinda came out muddy. Also I wish Kris would stop using these lashes (the one that flares out at the end and is smaller around the inner corner), it is not for Mariah's eye shape and I feel it closes her eyes up. Those lashes are more suited for Angelina Jolie. For Mariah, he needs to get those wispy lashes that flares out more around the center and opens her eyes. However, I will have to say she looked better in the videos. I like Mariah with softer makeup like she had on the #Beautiful music video, it makes her look more youthful, especially with more toned down bronzer and a peachy pink blush. The dress, however I completely agree with you. It looked cheap and it just didn't look right. Also bring back strappy heels.

Not loving the dress she wore to the 1OAK party. The makeup was also not on point and that splotchy tan is back. This look is a total no no. I don't get it, Mariah has slimmed down so much that she can carry off a lot of different types of clothes, why does she mess up with these choices when she has access to the greatest designers in the world?

If Billboard released an official prediction for "Work" going to #1, then there is a very good chance that it will go to #1. They obviously use statistics to make an estimate. It doesn't matter what Rihanna used to get the #1, at the end of the day, she may end up getting it. Mariah also has opportunity to get a #1 in any way she wants, but if she chooses not to take advantage of those, well it's on her really.

Hey Deedre. Thanks for your post. See I agree with you, and just like you, I didn't become a Mariah fan knowing she is so successful. In fact when I first became a fan, it was solely because of her voice. I heard her voice and that just amazed me to no end. I am not even talking about the whistle. (Although when I heard that I was like is this even possible? Haha I was really young.) It's just her tone is so unique and remarkable, it just makes you take notice. At that time, I thought she was a lesser known singer (but she was already a huge star). I thought she was lesser known because where I am from, not many people know her music and more so back in the day. Very few people here know about Mariah and her catalogue. Michael, Britney, Spice Girls, Janet Jackson, BSB and the likes were the ones people were listening to here during that time (the 90s). So when I discovered her, I thought wow she has such a beautiful voice but why is she not famous? It was years later, after I got the internet that I realized what an accomplished star she is not only in the US but worldwide. I also got to know about the full capacity of her vocal range, all the multiple recognition she received and so on. I was so surprised that I was in the dark for so many years and at the same time I was so proud of her, and when she made history with her 18th #1, it was huge. Anyways, I maybe could not express it properly in my original post, but I wasn't talking about people like you and me (who are fans because of her talent and not number) but about the GP and non-lambs. They have already written her off on every other account, taking every opportunity to diminish her contribution, so her records are the only things people can't deny because they are set in stone, so this is why I get so bothered when any of her records are threatened. But that's just me, I just want her to always be on top. But I understand what you mean completely.

G, I think what Lee meant was to Stella's daughters Mariah is now a legacy act or a veteran. And he isn't saying it in a disrespectful manner, and I understand what he means, because Stella's daughters are like 11 or 12. They would be more interested in current pop stars like Katy and Beyonce more than Mariah because generally that's what today's generation is into. Of course we can't be sure, but in general, this is the scenario. Diana Ross is a legend, but like in my case, I never really bothered trying out her work or even Madonna's because they were before my time and when I started getting into music there were other people who were popular. That doesn't diminish Diana's contribution to the world, it just means that each generation ends up idolizing stars who are popular during their generation. So if we generalize the Bulochnikov kids, they are more likely to be interested in the Rihannas and the Taylors. I hope I could make you understand. Lately I have not been able to express myself properly haha.

Lee dahlin' Rihanna can't possibly make history with her 14th #1 because then it has to be a feat no one achieved so far, and Mariah, Elvis and The Beatles have already been there, done that. But yes, I would like Mariah to get asked how she feels about Rihanna being her successor. What I envision is after the interviewer says Rihanna has her 14th #1 now, Mariah will be like "oh that's nice" followed by a painfully fake smile or a "I didn't listen to the song, I am listening to my own music." Then when he asks, "how do you feel about her gaining in on your record especially since she is such a lamb", we might get a "we love everybody come on" (with a teeth out smile simultaneously with a shrug), or a "I don't know her" or the legendary and "nail in the coffin" line "I don't think she has anything to do with me. My whole thing is singing. Writing songs. I've been doing this my whole life. Singing is first and foremost. It's a God-given talent that I'm grateful for. Her thing is something different." Haha Lord, I can't with Mariah being so quick with these lines. As for Stella's daughter, if Mariah sees what you wrote she will abandon Mishka in Disneyland.

Rihanna - Mariah (59,856)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
While Rihanna is no where near Mariah as a genuine artist (singer, songwriter, producer) what is sad is that if she does overtake Mariah, the headlines will be "Rihanna dethrones Mariah". All over. Mariah's 18 #1's is one of her bigger accomplishments and the fact that she has held this title for so long is a strong feat. She uses her 18 #1's and her biggest selling female artist label for promos everywhere. Yes, records are meant to be broken, but if someone takes down Mariah, I would rather have it be someone who is at least somewhat of a genuine artist, like maybe Adele. Yes, Mariah has nothing to prove to anyone but her commercial success is something that non-lambs know about and if people start taking over that too then the non-lambs will again have more ammo against her (along with the usual "she can't sing anymore", "when was the last time she had a hit?", "Mariah has passed by her sell date"). And all those. My main point is I love Mariah and I would want her successor to be someone who at least has some credibility as a genuine artist. Not a manufactured pop star. However I do not in any way support the thing I have been seeing floating around in this board talking about how she doesn't write good music anymore. That's bullshit. She had plenty of good songs, and a lot of them are not only radio friendly but also had potential to be hits. The only thing that is stopping her is her team's (or maybe her own) laziness/unwillingness to roll out a proper promo. Like dammit Mariah, roll out a fudging parade when you release something, let the world know. You have got to work on the promo. Everyone now has a small attention span so she can't just expect her name to do all the work, even current top artists are having to go to extreme promos to get their material heard. I am not saying twerk in a thong, but can we at least get you on some darn talk shows and have ads and skits and worldwide promo? Most people didn't even know MIAM exists because well we know why.

Rihanna (59,843)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
Whether Rihanna deserves her #1's or not is an argument I will keep for another day (in case any one is wondering, I am not a big fan of RiRi). But my main point when I posted about her being in the top 5 was directed at a post I saw a while back (which was probably a response to my own post) by a member of the board (and I can't honestly remember who it was) but they said how Rihanna's album will flop and she will never do good on the charts again and I talked about how we cannot simply rule out Rihanna because she is still at her prime and she is still young. But the member went on to talk about how it is impossible for Rihanna to come back up. So now Rihanna is in top 5 with a single she didn't even promote much and like Lee said, the video isn't out yet. I was talking about Rihanna at that time because I was saying how I wouldn't want someone like her to overtake Mariah and the other party was really sure about how Rihanna won't even crack the top 10. She debuted right into the top 10. She has a big fan base.

Who would you rather (59,800)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
So Miss Wendy had a round of "Who would you rather" on her show based on the picture of Bey and MC together. She said she held the poll among her staff and Mariah won by 1 point. Then she took an audience poll (probably fully expecting Bey to win). So when she took Beyonce's name, there was a huge cheer, but when she took Mariah's the name, the cheer was bigger and went on a few seconds longer. Haha clearly Mariah won the audience poll too but leave it to Wendy to say "I don't think Mariah won". Anyways she later did say that she thinks Mariah looks way better than Beyonce in the picture but she kind of still tried to water it down adding "if we ignore her annoying personality" and "on account of Mariah being older". Wendy, Wendy, Wendy, give it up, go to the Vegas show with your Rainbow tank top on (you know you have it), sing along to ABMB and go show Mimi some love, how long are we going to play this game? But on a different note, shame on Wendy to even pit these two beautiful women against each other (and other snarky comments she makes on her show about how some celebs look) when she herself is not quite the looker.

I enjoy "Bonnie and Clyde '03" though. So I am glad it exists. I think both "How Much" and "B and C" could co-exist and hold on to their own individuality. The two songs sampled Tupac in different manners. Jay-Z kept it similar to the original and Mariah gave it a breezy, fluttery, cute sound. I enjoy both the songs.

I think that should be a decision they make together. Mariah may not want kids, but who is to say James wants kids either? If they both don't want to then they don't really need to have more kids. They will have a big family as it is with all the children combined. Having a child is no walk in the park, they have to give the baby their time, attention and love. With both of their jet setting and hectic life style they may not be able to do that with more kids in the picture. So really they both need to be mentally ready and on the same page for this to work. If they chose to have a kid then we will be seeing American-Australian royalty.

TMZ on Bey and MC (59,764)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

TMZ posted an article about how Bey and MC got to talk about a possible duet at the gala and they both loved the idea. I am all for this collaboration, I think they can create a strong uplifting power anthem. Cross between "pretty hurts" and "imperfect". Or they can go for a club banger. Or a ballad, who cares, just get them in the same studio room.

Definitely wasn't Taylor. She released her album a good 5 months after Mariah released MIAM. Also weren't Mariah's demos leaked after the release of MIAM and fans thought it would be on her new #1's album? I could be mistaken but I don't think she intended to put them in her album, it wouldn't make sense to put it in a studio album rather than a compilation album.

I don't think it'll be the Vegas show set list. Mariah is not a fan of the set list. Plus do you think she will ever part with ILT and SIO if she had any control over the content? (Noo, never, no baby, no baby oohh. *never forget you style*) Haha. While I don't think it will be the Vegas set list, I think we can be pretty sure it'll be close to her other usual set lists. She really doesn't change up much. I hope we have a ANYNAF performance. Also "The Roof" and "Breakdown". Mariah isn't big on changes though.
