Haha well the 2 I read didn't really have anything to do with the plot. One was the protagonist talking about AIW being played everywhere (it was set around holidays) and said something like "All I want for Christmas starts playing with Mariah singing about what she wants for Christmas". The other one had AIW start playing during a school holiday event and the protagonist and her friend gets excited and runs to the dance floor and later when the boyfriend talks about how happy she looked she's like "it's Mariah Carey ofcourse I was happy". Both books by different writers.

AIW in psychological thrillers (104,840)
by Andrew from the UK

I do recall reading an Armistead Maupin novel many, many, many, years ago, called "The Night Listener" wherein someone in a mental health institution believed himself to be Mariah Carey. It is the only literary reference to MC that I've ever come across.
There's a joke about Bobby-A here somewhere but I'll skip over it. Personal growth, and all that.
Also, please do not imagine I'm suggesting anybody read "The Night Listener". Like "Tales of the City" it was bloody awful.
Can you provide context for the Christmas song being featured in a psychological thriller? Or shall we, like my father's love, just skip over it and move on?

Silence of the Lambs is my all time favourite book and movie. Haha it would have really thrown me for a loop if they added AIW (oops Andrew will lose it again) in it. Or Buffalo Bill grooving to the song while sewing would have made me really lose it haha.

Okay, so that made me laugh but not more so than your reading psychological thrillers with All I Want For Christmas Is You featured therein.
My all-time favourite film is The Silence of the Lambs. I can't for the life of me imagine Clarice consulting with Hannibal Lecter in an effort to find a pseudo-transsexual serial killer then hopping into her car, popping on the radio, and head bobbing to the beat whilst singing "Santa won't you bring me the one I really need."

I actually enjoy ITC. Do I reach for it often? No, but I do like the song. I think it's a fun carefree song and whenever it comes on I usually don't skip. Infinity had some really clever lyrics but just something about the song didn't connect with me but I do enjoy the fun lyrics, I just hardly ever listen to it.

MC sung at the Saadiyat Festival in UAE yesterday. There are videos on X of her singing LTT and ITC. I have always thought ITC was the beginning of MC writing cheesy and silly lyrics. I love the beat and the MJ sample, but I think the lyrics are on list of some her worst lyrics. I don't think she will write those type lyrics ever again because of the lukewarm reception to "Corny like Fritos" from Infinity. Don't you agree, Bill? Lol. And thanks for commenting on my picture.

There is not a single Mariah song that has the abbreviation AIW, according to Wikipedia. The closest is All I Want For Christmas is You (AIWFCIY) and All I've Ever Wanted (AIEW).

Haha wow I thought this was common knowledge. Yes it is "All I Want For Christmas". YDKWTD remains YDKWTD. AIW was shortened because everyone and their granddad knows the song All I Want For Christmas is You.

Something told me to Google it after my last post. Some Lambs are shortening the AIWFCIY abbreviation to AIW. I found it on the UKMIX music site where Lambs posted about the Rockin and AIWFCIY top spot battle in December. So does that mean YDKWTD is now YDK. Lol.

E=MC2 (104,821)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
E=MC2 is one of my favorite album from MC and I'll be forever sad that it wasn't a bigger success which it definitely should have been and would have possibly gotten her 1-2 more #1s but I understand she was going through a personal low. Also I love "Love Story", "Thanks 4 Nothin'" and "For the record". I especially love the bridge in "For the record" where she mentions so many of her previous songs. That was super clever.

To portray this album as a failure is somewhat disingenuous. It debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200, it gave Mariah her highest first week sales of any album and also a No.1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Anyone who would not relish in this kind of success in 2024 is either not a fan or telling lies.
The problem with the album is that it contains too much filler (much the same as the problem with The Emancipation of MiMi), ie., Last Kiss, Love Story, Thanks for Nothing, For The Record. This woeful R&B dreariness doesn't stand the test of time and Mariah keeps recycling it.
This year's album should have no more than 11 tracks and be upbeat with hot material that is unique and accessible to all. And if "Songs in the Key of MC" isn't to be, then I must agree with Mimi L that the title should be concise - either one or two words - and not self-referential. What next? "My new secret name is Tinkerbell"? Give us a break.

To be honest a surprise album by Mariah would not have had as much traction as Beyoncé's and that's not because I think Beyoncé is better. Mariah is a better artist through and through but Beyoncé knows how to market herself. Her whole album was a visual album with all high quality aesthetic videos and that's something I don't think Mariah would have pulled off. How many videos did we even get from MIAM? The only time Mariah could have gotten traction from a surprise album drop was if she released it right after TEOM. Not only was MIAM poorly planned it had almost no publicity.

The rumor was that Mariah had planned to drop MIAM by surprise, but Beyoncé went ahead and did it first. To avoid situations like that, she doesn't reveal much about her projects anymore. IDJ has always been supportive of Mariah, but sadly she was too much in control and everything was messy.

I wonder why Mariah stopped midway through MC30. I know speculations that she didn't have clearance for the rest but first of all why even start a project when you don't have all the clearance and secondly why would IDJ give her clearance for TEOM which was one of the biggest albums and not for the rest? She kept saying multiple times it's not over but then we never heard about it again.

This is the "leak" I was talking about. Ariana has an amazing voice and is talented for sure but I think she lacks something Mariah has. Mariah has that unique X factor to her voice and because of the fact that she writes her own songs, Mariah's songs have the raw personal feel something I don't find from Ariana. Also for the whistles Ariana uses it just because she can, Mariah uses it more artistically, she uses it like background music, she uses it to express emotions, she uses it for words (like the on and on for "Bliss"). Mariah beautiful incorporates her whistles. Mariah has that distinct raspy and buttery voice too that feels so raw and full of emotions. That's why she's often imitated never duplicated.

I love the first Ariana album. I guess I was trying to find 90's Mariah in her voice and music, but even though I've enjoyed a few tracks here and there from her later albums, I haven't been able to quite connect with her like that. When I read comments from her fans, it reminds me how devoted and ready to fight for her we were back then, as if Mariah had put spell on us. Those were the days. Ariana is hugely successful but fame has had a toll on her, in part that's why she's devoted to one project only.

There's this "leak" I recently saw of Ariana singing a bit of the WBT chorus and then adding her own verses so it almost sounds like a sample I think, and it was a rough draft. I'll see if I can find it. I don't know if it's for her next album but it'd be really cool for them to collab outside of the holidays.

Mariah should've handled the Ariana situation like the legend she is. Instead, she turned to being somewhat dismissive and shady. It was so obvious that Ariana stopped talking about Mariah altogether when previously she had praised her. When most people heard "Vision of Love" on the radio, they thought it was Whitney Houston. When I first heard "I don't Wanna Cry", I could've sworn it was Whitney too. But as I said, Mariah was not well, it was evident. It was refreshing to see Mariah and Ariana harmonizing on "O Santa". A collabo with Ariana for MC16 would be great.

TEC or MIAM would have been good on their own but combined it was like why on earth. I can't remember much from the era now that it's been years but I do remember the iconic "on the bathroom floor moment" when the different mix was released. As for the Ariana situation I don't remember exactly what she said but I don't think she was ever really rude and in fact I understand her frustration. Like Mariah we know has insecurities (even though she's a legend) and she has been more than once written off or called a has been or whatever even though she continues to stay very relevant so I understand that she would be annoyed at Ariana being called the "new Mariah" or "young Mariah". It's like she's being replaced and Ariana at that time was blatantly copying Mariah from the way Mariah sang, her whistles, even at one point her album was gonna be called "Daydreaming". It was insane. I know her management probably got her to do it but I could understand why Mariah would be irritated by it. It was always posed to her as a replacement not as someone who's inspired by her. She's been really graceful about other artists who were inspired by her like Beyoncé and Rihanna because they weren't outright copying her. Ariana since then has found her own style and Mariah welcomed her in her life.

"The Elusive Chanteuse" would've been great album title, but judging by the interviews back then, Mariah was all over the place mentally. It was sad to watch. From throwing a bizarre tantrum because they had released a mix of "The Art of Letting Go" she didn't like to the way she managed the Ariana Grande situation. I was like, this girl could be your daughter, your influence is all over her music, be graceful and tone it the f down. Thank God, they're in a good place now.
Mariah taking a picture from her supposed bad side is like "The Real Emancipation of cough cough Mimi" has started.

#Beautiful (104,796)

I never understood the point of the # in #Beautiful. Haha it was so random. But the song was dope and one of the freshest melodies. I really wish she pushed it more and was able to release the remixes on time because that could have been another top 5 hit for her. Thirsty and YDKWTD could also have been hits had the momentum of MIAM not died.

MIAM was still ok because it had the backstory of the self portrait but the game was over when she added the Elusive Chanteuse. It was so unnecessary. Also I wish she had kept the original title "The Art of Letting Go".

I would accept any adult title over Me I Am Mariah: The Elusive Chanteunse. Yikes. I still hate the title today. By the way, MC never told who was calling her that and why. I think it was Hitboy, Nas and James Fauntleroy because of all the splashes being consumed in the studio.

Y'all "Songs in the Key of MC" is not gonna be it. I would like her to do a 1 word album title simple and effective and it's not gonna be "Rebirth" lol, first of all that's cheesy and secondly it was JLo's album name. I like Phoenix though. She has risen from the ashes many times so it's appropriate.

Happy New Year everyone. Hope this year is full of amazing things for all of you. So happy to have this message board to come and share thoughts about Mariah. (I had the most random dream that Mariah moved into the house next to me and I invited her over for dinner ahah and Roc n Roe were there too.) Eric a big thank you for making this a safe space for all of us. I am going to try and post more to reclaim my #1 spot of all time posters. Dedicating Mariah's "Auld Lang Syne" to all of you. Facts. Stella had literally taken Mariah from a legendary songbird supreme to a controversial and trashy wanna be reality star with porn girl aesthetic. And yes I know Mariah is an adult and should be held accountable for her decisions but let's not forget the people you surround yourself with (especially when they're supposed to be your manager and consultant) can influence the way you act. Now that Mariah had an image refresh she should focus on fresh collaborations, fresh content and fresh approach to marketing herself. I hope Mariah knows how important momentum is. Right after the AIW went to #1 , when she was all over she should have rode that momentum and released fresh material and it would have gotten attention. Instead she just kept focusing on Holidays and talking about projects that never came to fruition. She can't just release something and then months later release a video with no promotion and then abandon an album. Caution was a solid album and had it been promoted well she could have had another hit on her hands.

Right. She doesn't need Stella back. What MC needs is a songwriter/producer partner like Jack Antonoff or Ilya. Both of them have done wonders for Taylor's and Ariana's careers. He or she has to understand MC as the legendary artist that she is today. I would love to see Robert Glasper or James Poyser become her songwriting partners. If she wants any Grammy nominations or awards in 2024, she is going to have to step out of her comfort zone. A duet with Howard Hewett or Peabo Bryson would set the R&B world on fire and garner her the recognition from the Grammy committee that she has never received.

Not Stella coming back to get her 2 minutes of frame. Lord I shudder at the thought of the time Mishka had control of Mariah's socials.

Who's Maria though? You may conjure Stella by leaving loads of highlighter, rouge and lipstick overnight near the chimney. It will lure Mama Bear. Vernite Stellu bleat.

Y'all must really be trolling because when Stella was in charge of Mariah's business Mariah's image was down in the gutters. It took years for RocNation to build her back up to the legend status that she truly should have been all along. Stella really had her going around LA in her damn bodysuits and put her in a reality show that was a through and through mess. Also not y'all out here missing a thief who stole from Mariah. Bye. Mariah doesn't need Stella's chunky highlighter and cheap leather jackets in her world. I'd rather her not be "relevant".

I miss her too. When Stella was around, Mariah was everywhere and relevant in terms, people talked about her.
