One Heart One Voice was released in between the two songs and it shows how much Mariah benefits when she works with classic songwriters and producers. It may not be everyone's cup of tea but it clearly is a quality production. Maybe Mariah should've used the budget of TD and sponsored a video with Ariana and Barbra Streisand. Get some of the fans back on her side with a great song.

"Not comeback material" is correct. Both singles could've just been album cuts by Mariah's standards. Some of the non-singles from Caution felt stronger and would've made better singles if released now. These last two songs feel like they're just "good enough" not to be scrapped, but they're definitely close.
It makes me wonder if Mariah is still in touch with the great songwriters of today, or if she really is just out of creative juice. Or has the overall quality of songwriters declined as well? Her top 3 collaborators, Jermaine Dupri, Manuel Seal, and Johntá Austin, are nowhere to be found. I wonder what's going on. Are they having royalty issues? Or did Mariah simply want a clean slate with fresh writers?
Whatever she's doing, it's not working. Beyoncé's albums may be mid, but she chooses the right singles. Texas Hold 'Em and Cuff It were undeniable bangers and carried their entire eras, not in album sales but at least the tours. She knows how to curate a group of talented songwriters. Mariah is simply missing the mark.
Happy to be proven wrong, though. Perhaps the hurt from Pat's death produced something directly from above. I know that when Mariah clings to God during catastrophic times, the melodies that arise are out of this world. Maybe the Clark Sisters gospel record is that moment. Maybe the balladeer Mariah has actually returned, because "Portrait" from Caution was not it. Still somewhat hopeful for this era, but I believe your assessments are pretty accurate. Mariah even said Sugar Sweet is everyone's favorite, so that signals to me that this was it. Everything is downhill from here unless she pulls a banger from under her sleeve quickly and blows everyone away.

Sticking to MC's music only (110,357)
by T from USA

I think Here For It All will span the last five years. That's the All she's talking about because a lot has happened since the pandemic. I assume it will sound quite varied and less cohesive than Caution which took a very short time to write and record. But that can be a good thing too because some of these songs have been baking for a while and they might be really perfect.

I hope that's not the case. It seems like the album is a compilation of songs from different studio sessions during the 2020-2025 period. The collaboration with the Clark Sister was first reported back in 2021, for example. We've heard about her having an album's worth of songs in multiple interviews over the last few years, so I would assume that she could deliver some bonus tracks on the alternate editions. *fingers crossed*

New music (110,251)

When Mariah did the album reveal, with the first two covers, I really got a Celine Dion mature vibe. I thought this was the next phase in her career. And it made sense because her fans have grown and are all older (with her). She had the chance to do it when she was on American Idol and had her older (mom) fanbase watching weekly. But instead she did #Beautiful, with that video and went the young pop star route again. Missed opportunity to grow and reinvent. Imagine if her whole American Idol image was geared toward being a 43 y.o. mom who has a slew of fans that are also there in life? The video for #B, then the songs that followed could've really given her career a new life. But instead songs like Thirsty and YDKWTD were on her mind. Look, it's twelve years since then and I thought after seeing the album shots that now she's embracing where she is in life. And then Sugar Sweet was released. Admittedly, it is the catchiest song she's released since Touch My Body or Shake It Off. But it does not suit her anymore. And I guess that's the hardest thing about being popular your whole career, the ability to step back and say I'm not anymore. I actually think she'd be more popular and have more success if she went the Celine Dion route and sang songs that fit a 55 year old woman with such worldly experience.

I completely agree. That's why I hope on the new album are some lyrics with deeper meanings. I have nothing against some fun songs/lyrics but not the complete album. We all know her voice has changed but what I don't understand is, when she was so young she wrote like a grown-up person. Now she's a grown-up and the lyrics are so girly. Normally it's the opposite. Is it all to be trendy and to get to charts again? Wouldn't lyrics that are less girly not work better? Just a question, please don't get it wrong. Something funny, I didn't know what Fendi is. Lol, a luxury brand, now I know. I watched a docu about Gucci yesterday, there they were also talking about the other brands.

What Virgin Records could have been for MC (110,249)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
Interesting thought. I think there was more to Virgin dropping her than just an underperforming soundtrack that actually didn't do that bad. She had a song hit #2, and a top 10 album on the Billboard 200. I think it was more the way she acted around that time. She was going through a mental health crisis and nobody understood. They just saw this diva who locked themself away and didn't answer calls, stopped working mid-promo. All of it frustrated the powers that be to no end and they concluded it wasn't worth it for them. They were shielded to the real Mariah. All they saw was the Sony artist, who was polite and professional. They didn't realize how heavily controlled she was to keep her in such a tight space. Virgin EMI isn't even a label anymore since 2012, so if she did stay with them she would've been looking for a new home by the time Triumphant was released. And of course, there wouldn't have been an Emancipation of Mimi.

What Virgin Records could have been for MC (110,237)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|

I was thinking today and wondering what MC's career with Virgin Records would have been like if they didn't buy out her 80 million dollars contract. The Virgin executives surely didn't support an established artist who had sold millions during the first ten years of her career. Just because her first album for the label didn't live up to their expectations, they decided to cut their losses and buy out her contract for 28 million dollars. Glitter was a soundtrack and not a regular album. They could have given her some grace and allowed MC to record a non soundtrack album. I am just thinking today about the "what if" with Virgin Records after 24 years. Virgin Records has other instances when they did support their artists when they were in a crisis or underperforming like Boy George, Janet Jackson, D'Angelo, and Aalyiah's family.

Interesting about Caution. And yet I find it her most tightest well put together album since Butterfly. Personally I like her albums where she had guidance. My worry is that if MC16 doesn't live up to her and Gamma's expectation she will once again say that her next one MC17 will be her most free and on her own terms she's ever made.

I think when MC said that she was referring to how she felt about the rollout of Caution in this article. She disliked how the Epic AR executives rushed her to make Caution and the instant grats album rollout.

By the way, what does Mariah mean when she says this new project lets her create music freely on her own terms? I do believe this will be the most unmanaged album of her career (it took 7 years to even get to this stage). But I thought she created Butterfly, Rainbow, Glitter, Charmbracelet and TEOM pretty much freely without that much oversight or am I missing something? Even MIAMTEC was probably very unmonitored.
It's like she always goes back to the first three album narrative of being controlled every time she releases something new, unless those above albums (the later years) still had heavy input by their respective labels?
I am low key excited to hear what a completely free and unsupervised (on her own terms) body of work will sound like. But again, then what is LA Reid's role who is exec producing it?

I love the song. I think it's the best song she's done since Caution. I would've really loved if Celine wasn't sick and she was asked on it too. And then a music video with the four divas. That would've made this whole thing even that much better.

Just heard OHOV. I've been asking for a Mariah and Walter collab my whole life (since I first heard Lead The Way). I have to say that Mariah sounds amazing. Her voice is just pure magic. Walter did her right, and my guess is he would never do her dirty on a record. He loves her voice as much as we all do. I do admit that she could've been subtracted and say Celine could've been injected with little to no change to the song. It is kinda standard, without the "Mariah touch" that she would add if she co-produced with with Walter.
I've waited 25 years for this. I've asked for it publicly online since 2010. I've got my wish however, my real wish would be something more in the vein of Underneath The Stars/Fourth of July. I'm not an A/C nut, I'm a good vibe nut, and like it or not, Mariah+Wally always created a good vibe.
I can rest now. Enjoy MC16 everyone, I'll play OHOV for the next 25 years. Bye bye.

Mariah signs with Universal? (108,535)
by T from USA

I know you're being sarcastic but 2020 was also #MariahCarey30 the thirtieth anniversary of her debut so if she wanted to, she could've had the second disc dedicated to something debut related, say the demo perhaps? Instead she deliberately choose a Daydream era project which was her way of giving us something for Daydream's 25th anniversary. She has done the majority reissues for their twenty fifth.

She packaged Daydream 25 with the Rarities in 2020. We received One Night, Slipping Away, Just Be Good To Me (Live) and the whole second disc of the Tokyo Dome Live set. It was definitely intentional that she choose that as the second disc because it was Daydream's 25th anniversary. I'm not sure how one couldn't see that as it's pretty clear. The question is what more could she give for another anniversary to Daydream? Maybe new remixes? I definitely see her concentration on the Mimi era's going forward with Universal.

All her email correspondence is now being sent by Universal Records. I find it interesting that she got through Merry Christmas 30th anniversary and then this switch. Maybe that was the last Sony reissue anniversary addition being released. And now she's going to do the Universal albums so she's signed back with them? That would mean no Daydream 30. But we did get Daydream 25, Butterfly 25 and Rainbow 25. So in one way there is no need for anymore Sony reissue anniversary additions. Now she can focus on TEOM 20, EMC2, Memoirs, The Elusive Chanteuse and Charmbracelet. And possible a new album from a UMG label.

With the anniversary about to come up mid April I had this "what if" moment. What if Obsessed was released as part of a re-release of the album (the way DFAU was for TEOM). Would the album have had a new second life? Would it have sold closer to its predecessor in the USA? If only she had done a few more Dream tracks earlier in the process of E-MC2 and switched out a couple of the songs. This is how I would envision the album plus a re-release:
1. Migrate (ft. T-Pain) 2. Touch My Body 3. Cruise Control (ft. Damian Marley) 4. I Stay In Love 5. Side Effects (ft. Young Jeezy) 6. I'm That Chick 7. Ribbon* 8. I'll Be Loving You Long Time 9. Inseparable* 10. Thanks For Nothing 11. Standing O* 12. H.A.T.E.U.* 13. Bye Bye 14. I Wish You Well 15. Obsessed* 16. Candy Bling* 17. It's A Wrap* 18. Up Out My Face (ft. Nicki Minaj)*

Walter Ari Babs 2026 (108,175)
by T from USA

In the article about the new song there is no mention that the song that MC did with Barbra and Ariana is produced by Walter Afanasieff. Instead it just says the project (meaning the album) is produced by Walter and two other producers. For all we know the song that MC is on is produced by Linda Ronstadt or Peter Asher. Also I heard from my friend who works with people who work with Mariah that there is no new album scheduled for this year at all. Apparently the earliest a new studio album would be ready by is late 2026 or early 2027. My prediction is actually it will be ten years since her last one before we hear a complete studio album. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it's important to give her space and it's better that she gets it just right because in all probability it very well will be her last.

In Mariah's second decade she had two #1 albums, five additional top 10 albums, four #1 hit songs. Sold well over 15 million albums and singles with sales plus streaming. That's not a bad second decade, more than some artists did in that span of ten years. And since then she's added a bunch more top 10 albums and even an additional #1. I think her career is just fine. New album "Sweet Sixteen" coming next year.
