(Thank you to everyone that read it as well.) I definitely get what you mean by a certain song or lyric that takes you back into time. It's amazing how most of could probably write our own life stories simply linking music to it. I did follow her music from the beginning. I remember being 8 years old when I heard Vision Of Love on the radio. It was immediately about the voice that I fell in love. By this time, my mother had already introduced music to me in many forms and genres, but never heard anything like her. I was that kid that would rather stay in to listen to music than go out to play. I was the strange one in the family lol it was odd to them that a kid around that age would always talk about music so passionately, discussing the greats of that time. Still the greats of this time. It wasn't until 1997's Butterfly, specifically the song Outside, that touched my soul like no other song ever did. I only knew about Mariah Carey the singer up until then. I would look for books or magazine articles that discussed her life story. I couldn't believe that this woman, this stranger to me, someone I only knew through a radio or TV screen, somehow understood how I felt growing up. It was like she spoke to me through her songs. I was really impressed with your train of thought and agree with much of what you said. I particularly liked that you referenced Mariah's humility, something that I hope people see. I wonder sometimes if the playful, eternally-12-year-old diva persona is all that the general public sees. I hope not, as she has so much more depth than that. I'm so glad that MC is in a place in her life that she doesn't "need" another hit and can make the music that makes her happy, but I would never count her out. I love the "old Mariah" but no one stays the same and I do love the "new". Every cd from the beginning until now has magic and soul in it. At the moment I listen to E=MC2 and Memoirs and it's so much fun. Sometimes it's hard to believe how genius she really is, her songwriting means everything to me. And it makes me sad, that some people don't see it because of some sort of an image. But I think at some point, I don't care because real music lovers know there's only one Mariah. So peace. The voice again (62,149) by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City) Can we all just accept the fact that MC's in 2016 is not same from 1996. For me I see she has become more comfortable with her voice as clips SSFT has shown us. I feel like this if you don't like Mariah in 2016 for whatever be your reason it's definitely time for you to move on. As we all see Mariah in 2016 has a family, planning a wedding, touring among other things and if all you focus on is her image, what note she missed or why she is not the manufactured perfect pop princess anymore I suggest you find another artist to like and fan out over. Whitney's voice had changed by 95 but she was still burning down stages. Check Arista's 25th Anniversary in 2000. Check 99's Divas Live and see the response to Whitney and compare it to MCs mediocrity at Divas a year earlier where the queen of soul and Celine burned the stage down. And you all are killing me with this artist lose their voice over time excuse. How is it that Patti LaBelle recorded "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" in 1960 and was able to burn down the stage with it in the 1980s (check the YouTube video with the red dress or her PBS special in 1998). That's 38 years. Or check out Patti singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" 25 years after she recorded it at Divas 2004. But MC recorded "Vision of Love" in 1990 and was only able to sing it until 96. Then she embarrassed herself on The View with it in 98, embarrassed herself again at her MTV special in 2001. Strained through it in 05 on BET and whistled through it at the Pepsi special in 2006. I agree MC songs are hard to sing. No one can do what she can do in the studio. But she is a studio singer. The biggest proof comes with "Through The Rain". As a real fan you know that record has not one background singer on it. But everytime she performed it live during the promotional tour in 2002-03 there was a wall of background singers with her. And she was lipping that last chorus until she started throwing her gimmick whistle in there. Why are we recording songs we can't sing live? To me "Vision of Love" is hard to sing too but before the irreparable damage to her voice in 97, she was singing it acapella all over the place and sounding good. So why the fraud in 02-03? I love MC to death. In the studio. You can not compare Whitney's vocal decline with MC when Whitney started singing in the basement on her records and performed all the way live and yet during MCs vocal decline she sings just as high but lip syncs on stage. That is also true for James and his wife Erica. Marriage can't happen until both divorces are final. A couple of months ago reports were that Mariah indefinitely postponed the wedding because the potential mother in law did not approve of her, or something like that. Maybe that is the key to her to actually be more respected as a live performer (not that she isn't respected, but many have really doubted her live performances, even mocking her performances). We've already said this so many times but she really needs to adjust and accept that her voice isn't her 90s voice anymore. Hell, it isn't even her 2010 voice. She needs to tailor future songs to really suit her voice's current character, strengths and limitations. Mariah's voice really deserve to be studied as it is unlike other singers' voice, who generally mature and become more rich in quality as time passes but still retain most of their original character. With Mariah, you can separate each era of her career by only listening to her voice because each era's vocals have many subtle differences. Even in her prime her voice evolves with each era.
