Re: Jermaine's letter (44,629)

Jermaine's letter to the lambs: "You know I want to go down as one of the greatest producers of all times." That's great Jermaine, but a manger and a producer are two very different things. Stick to producing.

Re: Mariah as a family member (44,628)
by G.G. from USA

If Mariah were my family member, I would sit her down and be real with her. I would tell her the truth, not just what she wanted to hear. I would tell her to get her promo game and her live performances together. I would tell her to get a stylist and choreographer immediately and to stop with the unrelatable diva attitude, rambling interviews and no more "dahlings". It's no longer funny or cute. I would tell her that all this mess is tarnishing her image and her brand and that to be on top again she needs a complete image overhaul. Sometimes the truth hurts, but we can all grow from the truth if we're willing to listen.

I see what you are saying, especially about business versus music career, my guess is that Mariah believes that branding is the only way she will stay current long term. I get the feeling that having a husband like Nick Cannon may also have shifted her focus. Ofcourse Mariah's talent doesn't seem like it would need a bigger brand but I believe that is where her head is right now.

Butterfly beverage (44,626)

"By holding a smartphone up to the bottle, fans will be able to access an entertainment network curated by Mariah. Fans who purchase the Gatorade-like beverage will be taken to Mimi-land or her social network that is filled with galleries, videos, and exclusive content." I'm so confused. Isn't that what Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and MariahCarey.com are for? Who other than die hard fans are going to want to do this? I'm so confused by the promo ideas that Mariah is coming up with.

Appearance (44,625)
by B from USA

Mariah's always been insecure about her appearance so I understand why she doesn't want to film a music video until she looses weight. Promoting the beverage instead of the music is bizarre. The honey flavored tea would make more sense. If people don't want to buy her music, why would they want to buy her beverage? She needs to get it together, ASAP.

Butterfly drink, M.C.E.O. (44,624)
by Manny from U.S.
| |
|
|
I became curious about Kevin Liles, the man next to Mariah at the Butterfly drink press conference. He is the former CEO of Def Jam. I thought: how would IDJ executives (or technically what used to be IDJ) feel about Mariah joining forces with the previous CEO of Def Jam? Mariah is looking for more business opportunities. Mariah even made a joke of almost naming MIAM, M.C.E.O. Kevin Liles has a big vision for Go N'Syde. They are joining forces with 40/40 clubs, owned by Jay. The state of the music business is different now. The major music companies fell apart when file sharing came along. iTunes became bigger. I wonder how much iTunes paid Mariah to have her CD streaming? It does seem unfair for us fans how Mariah is handling this. We see Mariah as an artist, singer, and performer. Mariah is The Voice. Mariah is looking at it from a business perspective. So much money is at stake, why would she risk losing it?

Mean girls and lambily (44,623)
by Me. I am Carly from USA

Why do all these comments remind me of mean girls? Remember Regina George gained weight and Katy and her friends made the board about how she was losing her band of loyal followers haha, ofcourse in the movie, Regina was nicer after she lost her "popularity". Can someone post that list? Another thing, I hate bullies, there is a way to make helpful suggestion without being a bully. Ask yourself when you post, am I being a Bull or a Lamb, have a bit of empathy. Being a lamb is not blind worship, iT is acting like family. So imagine Mariah was a family member.

Good review from Trusted Broadsheet in the Philippines (44,622)
by Louie Baltazar from Philippines

There was a time not too long ago when Mariah Carey was ranked the Number 1 diva in the entire world. She not only took the music industry by storm when she gave veterans like Madonna, the late Whitney Houston, and even Janet Jackson competition, she also gave them a run for their money when she burst into the music scene. With her unique signature style, Mariah managed to make a name for herself even though she was surrounded by the aforementioned tough competition who themselves were soon to become icons like her in the future. Aside from her stunning looks, especially when she was at the prime of her career starting in the mid-90s, Mariah Carey is an artist that I will always remember for the sheer outstanding quality of her voice which had a 5-octave vocal range and which at the time was so rare and thus, stupendously impressive. Mariah Carey was a complete package. She had the looks and the charm that captivated her audience. But more importantly, she had the musical chops to back it all up. Her "angelic sounding" voice soon became a familiar sound in households tuned in to their radios around the world. Each time she had new singles from her albums to promote, her music videos became a regular thing to see on music channels. Mariah has had so many top charting hits already that I have lost count of them.

I also want to suggest that maybe Mariah was telling the truth about twins widening her stomach, maybe she did have a tough pregnancy after all regarding her body and many woman even get ptsd from having traumatic birth situations. If she is very skinny it is less obvious ofcourse but she is perfectly healthy now.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I always love it when the "true lambs" get angry at those of us lambs (and we are lambs) who are upset with the lack of commercial success. Do they not realize that Mariah herself always uses her past success (18 #1 hits, 200 million records sold, etc) as part of her hype and brand? I mean, she used it on AI to shade Nicki Minaj. Mariah really hasn't had any sizeable success since the beginning of the E=MC2 era (maybe Obsessed, which was a top 10 hit). So she's losing more and more credibility in that area. Like E=MC2, MIAM is full of hit singles. I mean, why "You're Mine" was released instead of "Thirsty" or "YDKWTD" in February is beyond me. Great song, horrible single choice. I think at this point it's obvious that Mariah can only succeed with a great management and PR team. She may be a musical genius (no denying that), but at this point, I'd say that's about it. She's clearly not a smart businesswoman. She's slowly but surely destroying what's left of her career and any chances for future commercial success. At least we have the memories.

Behind the scenes, we don't have the full picture (44,619)
by Me. I am Carly from USA
| |
|
|
If you ask me to guess, behind the scenes right now, Mariah and Nick are in relationship counseling through church, trying to save marriage. Mariah deciding to not fire nannies and instead just be with kids more. Mariah doing meeting to find ways to own her brand, and brand herself. Mariah holding off on official videos before she loses more weight. She could very well be on hormones and other things at this age that impact weight. She may be building muscle which initially makes her boxier. Her top half is slimmer already. Would you tell the world all these secrets? Probably not. We didn't know she was doing the drink, that is not all we don't know.

Need a healthy version of Butterfly (44,618)

The drink is not about a drink at all, for Mariah it is purely about promotion. I hope they can come up with a healthy version, meaning no fake sugar or crap but just water with real fruit infused or a tea without sugar. I can't drink this version but will still buy it for the content.

I love new Mariah music (44,616)
by enwar00 from usa

I disagree with some comments. I'd rather see Mariah release an album and not promote it, than her not release an album. Of course it would make a lot of us proud if she opened at #1 and had a hit single, myself included, but it's obvious that some people truly care more about her being popular and selling than hearing new music from her. I also don't believe that no label would sign her.

Mariah could learn from this board alone, truth (44,615)
by Brad from USA
| |
|
|
Hi fellow lambs. I haven't commented in a minute but I have to say I do like the album. MILG, YDWTD, Camouflage, Supernatural and Money are my favs, in that order. That said, the marketing of this "project" is an insult to the fans on this board alone. She has hyped her success as part of her image and now doesn't seem a bit interested in assuring it in any way. I think "letting go" is letting go of us, the fans, fame, money, whatever. But she needs to let go of that sycophant, JD. Learn from JJ, bb. And she may just have to because if she no longer appeals to me, a fan of 24+ years who is fortunate enough to be able to fly to various cities and see her concerts in the front row, then she isn't going to appeal to anyone with her current public image. I hope she has soundly invested what money she made. And her new beverage? Mess. Her "performance" at the presser for this drink was scattered, as ever. Not to mention it alienates the super majority of people who care enough to even post on this board, which I venture to say is about two-thirds gay males (including myself). Still, I aint gonna buy no pink bottle with sugar water in it. Have a little more forethought than that MC, jeeesh. Why not make it honey flavored tea that's good for the voice, I could maybe see that. Also, if the voice is gone for live performances, be upfront. It's not your fault per se and it will actually humanize you to the public. Sorry to be negative but life aint all Butterfly beverages. Truth.

Last album ever (44,614)

Obviously it won't be her last album ever. MC is rich enough to record whatever and release it. Of course it won't be anywhere near as successful as it would be with a label, but she will still make albums.

Lol you sound almost as disgruntled as I am. I'm kinda starting not to care about MIAM flopping as hard as it has. I mean, Memoirs flopped, but MIAM has just gone bombs away. And she has no one to blame but herself and her incompetent team. Maybe this will be a wakeup call, like you and I have been saying. I mean, I still haven't forgiven her for E=MC2, and I now believe that was the last chance she had for an epic era. Moving forward, I'd be really happy with a gold album and a Top 10 radio hit single. But perhaps this is Mariah's turn to go the way of Janet and Celine. Then again, Celine actually sells internationally lol. Mariah is so much better than this, and MIAM proves she still has that magic touch to make amazing music. But the question is, does she care anymore? If she wants to retire and be a full-time mom, that's totally fine. Just don't release albums if that's what you want. If you're going to release an album, please put in the work required to not have it sell only five copies. End of.

Promo model fail (44,612)
by Chicago Lamb from USA

Mariah told David Letterman she "wanted to do it differently", that she wanted "the album to be heard as a whole". She said people were asking her about the next single and its promo. She wanted to try it another way. Clearly, it did not work and like the webmaster said, who will want to sign her if the last release did not sell well?

The reason for no promotion / be patient (44,611)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
Roe's hair has been hurting a lot, so Mariah needs to promote her Butterfly beverage (only for women obviously) to be able to take care of medical bills. It is disappointing seeing her promoting anything other than an album that took her 5 years to release. No word of any other single being released, so fans now will finally leave the "Migrate should've been a single" litany to jump on YDKWTD, MILG for the next 5 years? What is going on? Maybe all this mess is a blessing in disguise, she might humble herself a little bit like back when she was still popular. Maybe she'll realize that people don't like this over the top diva persona she has put on since E=MC2. Nobody is telling her that she comes across as arrogant and unrelatable. The more control she gets over things, now with JD as a poppet manager, the worse things get. Maybe this is a wake up call. Another weird thing, I haven seen any particular song from this album into iTunes top 100.

Your post summarizes my thoughts exactly. Mariah provided us with an amazing album. Even many of the critics agree. And that is precisely why it kills me that it's not doing better. She really does deserve success with this album. Not only is it just a great record by itself, it also has several songs that could do really well commercially (Meteorite, Thirsty, and YDKWTD). Mariah is synonymous with commercial success whether people like it or not (or, at least she used to be). I understand if Mariah just wants to be a mother not be a machine. That's fine. By why release this album at all, then? Why put in years of hard work in writing and record these amazing songs if you're just going to let the entire ship sink? If Mariah wants to retire to take some more time off for her family, I fully support her. I just wish she could pick a path and then stick with it. If you're going to release an album as great as MIAM, then get out there and promote it. It deserves to be heard by as many people as possible.

Streaming (44,609)
by Lamb_O_Chop from Australia
| |
|
|
I'm convinced Mariah doesn't/didn't care about this album not doing well. Why else would she stream it for a whole week prior to its release. She practically gave the album away. If I'm not mistaking the album is still streaming. So in reality only the real fans will go out and support the album for the sake of supporting Mariah. However, the general public won't buy an album that they could listen to free of charge. Mistake? It depends on what Mariah was expecting. Maybe she just wanted it to be a gift to the fans and garner critical acclaim or maybe she thought streaming the album would make ppl want to buy it after hearing the masterpiece it truly is. Your guess is as good as mine.

Letting go ain't easy (44,608)
by Alexis from USA

I know you're mad, but Mariah condoms sound epic. Aside from that, Tina Turner was one of a generation's most powerful voices. But what was she doing when I was little? Promoting pantyhose. Prince's new music video barely has him in it. Cher waited 12 years to release an album in 2013. If not for me living in Vegas, I'd have no idea what Celine Dion is up to. Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston are dead. You can be amazing and not be the most popular artist all the time - it happens. Maybe she's helping herself remember that she no longer lives in that dominion where it was all about being number one and breaking records. Maybe she's just about her kids and she did mention on some interviews wanting this to be a statement record in case it was her last album. 24 years is a long time and if she wants to pump her brakes and stop being the machine we know she can be, is that the end of the world?

Just my thoughts (44,607)
by Adam from US
| |

I agree with post 44,601. I do think sales are not all of it. But they go hand in hand. I want Mariah to sell millions and have #1's because I'm a fan and I believe she deserves it. I really love this album and I'm completely upset it's not doing better. And I'm upset at the lack of promotion. I love that Mariah gave us this album, but there's not anything wrong with wanting her to hit #1 either. I just don't really understand what's going on. I don't know why the label or Mariah didn't release a single before releasing the album. To get the hype going. And I don't think they shipped many copies. My local Walmart had 8. And then I bought 2. I went back the other day and 1 was left. Target had 2 stacks and I bought 2 Target Editions and there's 1 left a couple days ago and 4 regular left. A huge music store in Charlotte only had 7 left the week of release. But at all of these places, there was no and I mean none promotion at all. No signs. No posters. Nothing. Even at Walmart there's a place upfront where new music is at and Mariah wasn't there. Miranda Lambert is all over it this week. Something just isn't right. I have now bought 7 copies all on separate receipts. I just don't know. I'm annoyed.

I agree, which is partly why I have been radio silent on the issue of lack of promotion in recent days. The way I see it is, if Mariah can't be bothered to promote her record, or give fans some memorable performances (ie not dubbed or lipped), then I'm certainly not going to be bothered. If Mariah thinks that promoting some ridiculous beverage is in touch with what her fans want, then she's clearly out of touch and needs a serious reality check. Either that, or she's showing what's really important to her, which is the dollar sign. I can't tell you how disappointing it is to see someone, who says they seriously love their craft, fail to show it any due support or recognition. 57,000 copies on an album in her first week in the US shows how much her fan base has deteriorated. I can guarantee you that those 57,000 copies represent probably only around 35-40k fans, as a lot of them will have bought multiple copies. Perhaps if she took live performances more seriously, as opposed to attending events to do with a brand of water or whatever, she's a) have more than 40,000 US fans left, and b) had a voice worth hearing live in tact.

Mariah: Business Woman vs Artist (44,605)
by Taylor from USA
| |
|
|
I believe that at this point, we have Mariah the Business Woman instead of Mariah the Artist. That's not a criticism, but my honest assessment. With the latest launch of the beverage product, which is utterly confusing since there's been very minimal promotion for the album, we can perhaps conclude that Mariah has shifted her professional priorities. Music may still be her personal priority, but it has taken a back seat because from a business standpoint it no longer is lucrative. Unfortunately, that appears to be the reality because it has always been about business even if Mariah was originally an artist instead of a business woman. A part of me is slightly resentful because as a fan from the very beginning, others like myself have supported and launched Mariah the Artist, so for her to be so silent and not acknowledge our frustration seems like we are no longer appreciated.
