Re: Trish and Billy (43,495)

Trish, I completely agree with you about Butterfly comparisons. Her writing was much deeper I think prior to the Walter fallout. I also agree with you about There For Me (and I'm adding Lead the Way). Billy, thanks for pointing that out. I just realized the Barry White credit on the original It's A Wrap. I'm just hoping she gives us new vocals and a sick beat for it. Would be great if JD gave it some 90s So So Def flavor, in my opinion. He nailed that HATEU remix sample. Could have done without at least one of the two rappers (OJ).

Barry White is listed as a writer on the "Memoirs" version of "It's a Wrap" as well, because of the sample it contains ("I Belong to You" by The Love Unlimited Orchestra). On another note, even though "The Impossible" is one of my favorites and have listened to it thousands of times since its release, I never noticed the "Crybaby" reference before. Wow. Thanks for that.

WMA (43,493)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

Mariah will be opening WMAs and will be honored with the Pop Icon Award. I am sooo excited. It's gonna be a perfect setting. She can sing her new songs. And since WMA's are watched by people from different age groups especially the younger generation, she can attract the attention from them. This will help boost her CD sales. Again, I do hope she sings new stuff and not her old hits medley .Please Mariah don't let this opportunity go to waste.

Mariah to open World Music Awards (43,490)
by Eternal from Italy
| |
|
|
I just read on MDJ that Mariah will open the World Music Awards and also receive an Icon Award on May 27, the same day as her new album release. Does that mean she will open the show with a performance? If that's the case, it would truly be good promotion if she could sing the hell out of a new song on the album. I think she should let people stream about 30 seconds of songs on the new album and do a poll on her Facebook page for the song people would most like to hear as a next single. Since her team and herself have proven that they aren't really able to make good single choices, they should let the public have their say instead. 15 more days to MIAM, I can't wait.

Writers on MIAMTEC (43,488)
by TR from USA
| |
|
|
I notice Barry White is listed as a writer on the It's A Wrap rehash with Mary J. I wonder if she interpolates a line like she did in We Belong Together or if it's a remix that samples a Barry White song - you know how Jermaine D. does. Either way, that should be interesting. Also, so far I'm not impressed (surprisingly) by Darkchild's contributions to this album. He was the one I was most excited about when I heard they were working together. Walter A. is not listed as a writer on any of the new songs, but wiki (I know it's not a credible source) lists him as a partner on this. I really hope that means he co-produced One More Try, and not just one of the throwaway tracks.

Butterfly comparisons (43,486)
by Trish from USA
| |
|
|
Comparing new albums to Butterfly is a good way to set yourself up for disappointment. I thought the weakest song on Butterfly was My All and that was a #1 hit, and is a million times better than You're Mine. I think Walter and Mariah were at the top of their game on Butterfly and then it all came crashing down with their fallout. The lyrics on the Butterfly album are crazy, on every single song, but Mariah's ballads and lyrics since that album have been lacking, and the few gems that have come out since were written in the Butterfly era. Although I love One Child, to me that song proves what Mariah is capable of. I also love the very few songs she wrote with David Foster (There For Me is one of my all time favorites).

Promo (43,485)

So MC is performing on the Today Show on Friday. Is that all the promo that she's going to do for this album before it's released ? I can't find anything else online that is scheduled. I saw a while back that she was going to perform on American Idol, but I guess that was just a rumor.

Background vocals - Butterfly (43,484)
by TR from USA
| |
|
|
I think her background vocals on the Butterfly album were the best she's ever done. All throughout that album, she had just the right amount of subtle and hidden vocal flourishes - specifically on Beautiful Ones, Fourth of July, and Breakdown. (All of her "I don't wanna break down" runs mixed with BTnH's are like a maze - you just start spiraling within them. Beautiful.) It wasn't dramatically overdone (a la My Saving Grace, as much as I like that song, and much of what she's done lately i.e. the video announcing MIAMTEC title). I feel like back then the backgrounds were deliberate and almost written into the track whereas post-Rainbow they've grown and became kind of a safety net for live performances so she can pick and choose what she hits. Also, I love when she line drops previous songs in newer ones. I literally just noticed she added "okaaay so it's 5 am" (from Crybaby) in the background of Impossible, right after she sings "Love you like it's 5 am and I'm off work." And then she giggles a little (and I'll admit sometimes the giggling gets on my nerves, but this one was seductive and like a little wink to the true fans who caught that). And of course we all know she line drops from The Roof into Lullaby. Any others?

If I could ask Mariah (43,482)
by Gilbert from USA
| |
|
|
If I ever have 5 minutes with Mariah I'd ask if she still wears that necklace around her waist or hand, sometimes she used to wear it but hidden. I always wanted to know how she knows where to place those whistle notes in songs. For me, it's like the perfect place to place them and I always wanted to know how she decides where to place that note.

Outside background vocals (43,481)
by ZachSingsMariah from USA

I totally agree, love her attention to detail because it always makes for richly-layered, complex songs that you get something new from upon each listen. Another great example is yet another Butterfly track, "Outside". Listen to the background vocals and how they contrast with Mariah's part on the final verse/chorus; the composition is utterly sublime.

Beautiful ones (43,480)
by Darryle from USA

She also does something like that on When You Believe around 4.16/4.19 but it's more noticeable. Tiny little details like that just show how much of a perfectionist Mariah is and how much work she puts into her albums, tiny details and all. I hope all the tiny details Mariah has been talking about during this era are worth the wait.

The Beautiful Ones vocals (43,479)
by Will from England
| |
|
|
So, I was on my way back to Uni, and I was listening to "The Beautiful Ones" through my earphones, and towards to the end of the song, I noticed some very distant, breathy high notes just going along with the melody that I had never noticed before (comes in around the 5.48/5.49 mark). I have listened to the this song countless times and never noticed those notes before. So glad that I'm still discovering something new with Mariah's songs, especially the background vocals. The same goes for "You're Mine" or "We Belong Together". I can listen to her various variations of saying "mine" or the "oo, ahs" all day long. Simply beautiful.

You are right Mariah is sorta referencing Butterfly with new album. I instantly made connection with the title when I was hearing Honey today. The album cover is referencing Close My Eyes, "Guardian angel I, sail away on an ocean, with you by my side, orange clouds roll by." When Mariah was saying that MOAIA was sorta going to be like her new Butterfly, I didn't felt that way about it. I was more like the R&B version of Charmbracelet. Seeing the writing credits from the album its giving out Butterfly feels.

Agreed. That's why I said that if it's intentional, then I can accept it but if not then it looks ridiculous to me lol. I watched the artist interpretation video that Gilbert posted and it does make sense. The Japanese cover still freaks me out though lol.

So right on cue the holy have spoken and decreed all conversation must cease, record buying halted and opinion forming stopped unless it is in the absolute worship of Mariah, the queen of positivity herself. I mean, really, have you heard her speak? The woman loves a moan. Anyway, I'd rather be a realist than a hypocrite and I, for one, value everyone else's right to an opinion, even if I don't always agree with it. Isn't that why were here?

Am I the only person noticing all the references Mariah has been making to the Butterfly era? I think this album is vocally/lyrically going to slay. I just hope she isn't getting us really hype for a disappointing MOAIA type album, even though I adore Memoirs. It definitely doesn't compare to her previous albums.

Thank you KaizenOcean for the post on the glossary. I was going to post something related when I saw the new title had elusive in it. I recognized it was part of Honey's lyrics ("I can be elusive with you honey"). I was just going to write that I need to grab my dictionary when I listen to Mariah's songs. I read much and I feel I have an extensive vocab. Several times though I've had to look up the meaning of words from Mariah's lyrics. Mariah has helped me expand my vocabulary.
