You're right there was a bidding war to sign her between Warners and, as it was back then, CBS records. When the "demo tape incident" happened at the party Brenda K Starr took her to, MC was already in negotiations with WB. I've no idea what numbers each party threw in, but all Mariah ever said about it was that it was CBS allowing her to write her own songs that sealed it for her. I think they could have even offered less money and she still would have gone with them on that element alone.
Clive Davis actually tried to buy the song Someday for Whitney, it was then that Mariah realised she could indeed write a good pop song and rather than selling it (as tempting as it was for a young girl "without a penny to her name") she retained it for herself and it gave her even more determination to become an artist in her own right.

I don't like OSD, never have and never will. I can't understand why it went to number one, and stayed there for weeks. It's not an evergreen.
I don't like the diva and "I don't know her" acts. I think Jennifer is being the bigger person and much more likeable.
I think of Mariah as a singer, not a songwriter. I do not see what's so genius about her lyrics. I know that many of you guys think she is.
Glitter, the movie should have been enough proof to Mariah to never try to act again. She can't act and when she does it's just showing her diva side again. It's like Lindsay Lohan. No emotions.
I don't think we should pay too much attention to the mobile phone videos of her concerts on YouTube. I believe that if we went back in time and did that to her concerts on the early 90's we would also hear a lot of faults.
I feel sad for all of you that doesn't pay attention to the albums that made her the star she is today. Without those albums you would never know her and maybe be writing on the JLo Archives instead.

Regarding only songs or albums, what are some unpopular opinions you all got? "Hero" still hasn't grown on me yet. "Thank God I Found You" was not #1 worthy and based on how many song I listen to from each album, Caution is my least favorite.

I had a nine hours long drive yesterday and was listening to the Barbra song and many others including Whitney's I Look To You. Both of them got this metallic sound in their voices at that point in their careers. As you said, she will never tell us the truth of what happened.

As I said before, chill out for a change. You'll notice you've made a bit of a fool of yourself as I didn't say I could, although I can sing "the way, hey" from Hero without needing backing tracks, backing singers, auto cues, lip syncing, lighting, and an army of men to navigate me across the stage.
I'd direct you to this really good platform called YouTube. From there, type in the search box "Mariah Carey cover/karaoke" or words to that effect. You'll be presented with an almost inexhaustible list of unprofessional singers, amateurs, and hobbyists who can carry the tune of Hero just as well as Mariah did back in 1993.
Mariah *was* one of the greatest vocalists of a generation, but sadly isn't any longer. How or why that happened will only ever be speculation because she herself will not come clean about what happened to her voice, and continues this masquerade of being this phenomenally good singer when she simply isn't any more. If you genuinely can't see that, then you are just another delusional yass queen who has no place in the fandom, as you're part of the problem as much as she is, for continuing on the facade.

Just a random question about this song. In 2013 when Mariah was about to release The Art of Letting Go album, the tracklisting that leaked had this song on it together with You're Mine, You Don't Know What, Supernatural etc, so I know that leak was legit. Then the album was postponed and this song was not on the album but Mariah performed it on her tour in 2014. Later this song was released as live version taken from her concert on The Rarities. So my question is, do you think Mariah had a hidden album version of this song somewhere in the vault? It would be nice to hear a studio version.

I don't like it. Here's the thing. I knew it would be a ballad from the 90s. I knew it would feel "crowded". And I do think it's genius how he interchanged them throughout the verses. I am a Mariah Carey fan and what's most important to me is a lyric. Then the vocal. Then the arrangement. The lyrics are both banal and generic. It's not a song that needed to be written. It's been written before. I feel as though this is one of the songs sung before a Super Bowl national anthem with young girls from around the world tryna count steps with lame choreography. It belongs at the end of a really bad movie where the credits are more entertaining than the plot. My favorite person on this board woke me up out my sleep with a text for this? It's just Another Trite Hope Song rackin my brain like crazy.

I personally don't think Mariah needs another WBT moment. I think that she has been chasing another WBT moment since 2005, and that has held her back. We had DFAU, ISIL, and Angels Cry. We need her to continue on the trajectory of working with new people, who can continue to inspire her creatively. Just my opinion, but we already have WBT and its knock offs. We don't need any more.

Mariah, on fire (109,212)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

Ok so BETs. Tell me why this woman looks like she's still in her early 30s. She looked absolutely breathtakingly stunning and every bit the mega star she is clad in that gorgeous gold mini dress fit for the music industry's golden girl. I liked that she was more playful with the performance, I do wish she wore more comfortable shoes so that she had the confidence to strut around by herself and strut onto the stage during the opening of the song it would have made it more fierce but I see her trying and I'll take it. I absolutely loved her second look too, she looked so angelic and pure and her speech was amazing. The little humor, her embracing her diva and extraness. This is a new Mariah era not just album wise but personally too. I also hear her team discounted the song right after BETs a smart move. I'm liking how her team is handling her so far. The roll out of this era has been amazing. I can't wait for the video.

I hope this shuts down people who think Mariah isn't chasing chart success anymore and is just making music for fun or for fans. Chart success is what has been driven into Mariah since she was a teen signed on to Sony. She doesn't know any different. She is rightfully proud of her chart accolades and I am happy to see her openly just say that she wants that 20th and 21st #1. I like the new vocal Mariah that isn't afraid to voice her mind.

I think this is her strongest first single since ILT. It took me a couple of listens to find the vibe but now that I have I can't listen to anything else. The tune is absolutely addictive. I'm living for her confidence and sass. Plus I have a feeling this is a "reminder" single like ILT. There's something much bigger coming.

Thank you, darling - I truly appreciate your response. I do try to stay aware of what's happening. I'm not trying to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but I genuinely believe Morgan is a plant, and we should be cautious. He's shown time and again that he'll do just about anything for a quick payout.
Mariah is at a stage in her career where her success is not only undeniable - it's powerful. She confirmed a couple of years ago that she owns all of her masters: 86 singles and 15 studio albums, dating back to 1990. That level of ownership is incredibly rare, especially for someone who's not just the voice, but also the writer and producer. She's earning real revenue from her catalog, and that kind of power makes her a threat to certain people.
We've seen a similar pattern before. When Michael Jackson began acquiring ownership of his music - and even the rights to other artists' catalogs - it triggered serious pushback from powerful forces. It wasn't subtle, and it wasn't fair. I wouldn't be surprised if Mariah ends up facing similar tactics. It's something we should all be paying close attention to.

Some people seriously need to get off their high horse. Bill is an appreciated member of this board. When he stepped away for a while, a lot of us genuinely missed him.
A bunch of us have been here for over a decade. We've supported Mariah through her ups and downs, bought the music, defended her when it counted, and yes, we've also kept it real when needed. We've seen plenty of people come and go, showing up with loud opinions and disappearing just as fast. Some may not like what Bill said, but no one here gets to question his or anyone else's place fandom.
If for some of you the idea of being a fan means clapping for everything and pretending everything's perfect all the time, that's not what this board is about. And if hearing a different opinion is too much for you, you might want to grab a helmet, it's 2025.
I've said it before: one of the reasons this board has lasted over 20 years is because it's always allowed for different opinions. Not just blind praise, but real talk too. That's what keeps it interesting. Every time this place turns into an echo chamber, it just dies out.
And yeah, sometimes we get frustrated and show a little tough love. But that's only because we know what Mariah is capable of. That doesn't mean we don't love her or support her any less.
I actually appreciate reading different opinions, even ones I don't agree with. That back and forth is what makes this board work. It's not a fan club where everyone's forced to say the same thing.
Bill, you've been part of this board for years, and most of us really value what you bring. Don't even think about disappearing.

Well, I know it ain't gonna happen but since I have a little extra time. I'd like an Adele-like album. No rap. No r&b. No vocal layering. No wall of background singers. Just her and piano or her and guitar. Some love songs mixed in with some hope songs mixed in with some introspective songs. Imagine a quiet album with songs as stripped down as Languishing, Close My Eyes, My All, With You, Camouflage, Vanishing, Music Box, Looking In, Reflections, Petals, Cry, Portrait. And for the voice. Maybe keep it down to what can be replicated live even if the venue is too cold, too hot, missing an umbrella holder, short circuits ear monitors, has no running water for humidifiers, only let you in with less than 7 hours sleep. And only use the whistle twice. Yeah, that would be a dope album.

I am so grateful that you took the time and the love and the fortitude to write and post this, especially on this board. Beautifully written. "I couldn't have said it better" isn't enough. *It couldn't be said better.* Period.
You're the kind of true fan that I hope Mariah, somehow, knows that she still has, because she wouldn't know it reading the majority of the comments on this board.
She's a human. She's flawed. She's a treasure. She saved lives. She's older. She has feelings. All are true. If you're a fan, a real fan, then you just have to love her. That's all. I do.

That's a new one. I'm very new here. Please show me this baby you speak of. I'd like to see if he is as strong debater and doesn't resort to calling anyone a "yasss queen". But the bone I pick with Edward is because he made a big deal with me saying Mariah is avoiding wrinkles. Which btw, is a very verifiable fact. I'm just throwing the ball back way harder now because you don't do that to new comers. I'm finding out he's rather weak in debate and can't actually defend why he believes what he believes. His points are easily debunkable and he can't present you any fact. [censored] He made fun of Mariah. A couple people stood up for Mariah and called him nasty. He now then say "wow okay I guess I'll just hibernate aw I'm so sad". Its like he did the bullying and now he's the victim. Do you see the level of derangement? And with you? I don't have any problem. You're rather polite. We disagree with Solange's remix but you've never been rude. Hope this helps.
